    BLAKENEY NEWS
Another aged and highly respected resident of the community passed away on Monday evening, in the person of Mr Jas Barker, sr., after about four months of suffering from cancer of the stomach. Deceased who was the only son of the late Wm Barker, was born in Ramsay township nearly 83 years ago, on the farm upon which he died, but spent his early boyhood and until he was married on the farm on the eighth line now owned by his son, Mr R. Barker. In 1855 he was married to Joann Hood, who was born in Scotland, and had come to Canada. After their marriage they went to the farm upon both spent the balance of their lives, her death taking place in 1874. This union was blessed with a family of nine children., two of whom died in infancy. those who are now living are William in Almonte; James at Blakeney; Robert near Bennie's Corners; Alex on the homestead; Maggie (Mrs Arthur Beach) at Nokomis, Sask; David and Neil at Seattle, Wash. Some time after the death of his first wife Mr. Barker was married to Agnes Wood, a daughter of the late Walter Y Wood, who is still living. There were no children to the second marriage. A sister Mrs Wm Conner of Carleton Place, also survives. The late Mr Barker was possessed of more than ordinary energy and progressiveness, and as a consequence was one of Ramsay township's most prosperous farmers.
Evidence of his thrift and thoroughness was to be seen all over his farm, and many a traveller along the ninth line had looked with admiration at the splendid fields of waving grain which were the result of his up-to-date methods and his thorough application of them. in this connection he was crop-viewer for the township for a number years and was connected with the N.L.A.S., latterly as Honourary director, so long and so actively that when failing energy prevented him from being on duty at the fair, his presence and assistance were much missed. he was also a member of township council for some years, and here is fine, executive ability and good judgement were of much value, especially in the roads and bridge department. He was also active in church matters, and took a deep interest in the Presbyterian church of Blakeney, of which he was a member, and in fact was one of the few to whose earnestness and energy, the existence of the church was due. For many years he was a member of the managing committee, and was also a leader of the choir in his earlier years. he was one of those who was instrumental in the organization of the Rosebank cheese factory, and for some time its energetic president. the funeral took place today, Thursday, to the eighth line cemetery, and was a fitting tribute to the memory of so old and useful a member of the community as Mr Barker was. the services were conducted at the home and the grave by Rev Mr Merrilees of Blakeney.

?b?John McGill Is Called By Death?/b?
Respected Citizen of Pakenham Twp. Passes At Great Age of 92 Years.
There passed away at his home in Blakeney one of the most outstanding figures in the district, connecting the present generation with the pioneer life of nearly a century ago, in the person of John McGill who died Friday evening last. Born in Ireland in 1842, he came to this country with his parents at the age of seven years. The family resided at Bell's Corners during the year 1849 and came to Pakenham township in 1850, carving themselves a homestead out of the bush that covered the entire country at that time. This old McGill homestead is located on the 11th line of Pakenham and is still occupied by the family in the person of W.T. McGill well known throughout the district as a fox rancher of broad experience. The late Mr McGill resided on the homestead until 16 years ago, when he retired to reside in Blakeney, leaving the labours of over 60 years to a new generation.
Like most young men who pioneered in this part of Canada he worked in the lumber camps in his early days. He was and expert hewer with the broad axe and could recall many interesting experiences in connection with those exciting chapters of life in the forests along the Bonnechere and other tributaries of the Ottawa as well as lumber camps in the state of Michigan.
A veteran of the Fenian Raid trouble of 1866, Mr McGill enlisted with a detachment of the 42nd regiment that was recruited at Pakenham under the late Major O'Neill. He went to Cornwall and remained with the colours until the troops were disbanded. In his time he took an interest in municipal affairs of the township being one of the reeves of Pakenham, in the early days.
    Married in 1870.
Mr McGill was married in Almonte in 1870 by Rev Mr Gordon to Miss Catherine McKay of Lanark Township, who survives him at the age of 85.
This remarkable couple having entered wedded life three years after the young Dominion was born, celebrated their golden jubilee in July, 1930, the occasion being marked by kindly felicitations from a wide circle of friends throughout the Ottawa Valley.
He leaves in addition to his wife, Three sons and three daughters, namely James of the 11th line of Pakenham, John of the 9th line of Pakenham; and Wm T. on the homestead; Mrs Alex Barker of Ramsay; Miss Susie at home and Miss Lou of the department of national defence, Ottawa. Of his own immediate family there is one brother, Alex of Almonte.
The funeral was held on Monday afternoon from the late residence of deceased in Blakeney, where service were conducted by Rev George F. Warren of the United Church, Blakeney, assisted by the former pastor, Rev William Merrilees. Interment was made in the Auld Kirk Cemetery. The pallbearers were Jas Bingham, Wesley McCann, James Barker, James Timmins, S.J. McAdam and George Smithson.
Old-time comrades of the Fenian Raid, Alex Tait, and Thomas Needham of Pakenham were in attendance.
The numerous floral offerings and exceptionally large number of those who attended attested to the esteem in which Mr McGill was held.

?b?Mrs John McGill, Sr. (Catherine McKay)?/b?
On Sunday morning, May 21st, at the home of her daughter, Mrs Alex Barker, Catherine McKay, relict of the late John McGill of Blakeney, passed peacefully on to her eternal reward. The deceased, one of Ramsay's oldest residents and earliest settlers was in her 92nd year and until prevented by failing health, was a devout member and regular attendant of Blakeney United Church. The funeral took place on Tuesday May 23rd, from her late residence, to Auld Kirk Cemetery. The religious services were conducted by Rev F.E. Rice of Blakeney, assisted by Rev G. Empey of Newboro, and Rev Geo Warren of Bishop's Mills, when fitting references were made to the ideal life which had come to a close. A favourite hymn of the deceased, "What a Friend We Have In Jesus" and "The Shepherd Psalm," were sung during the service. Mrs Geo Warren played the accompaniments. The pallbearers were Messrs John R. Reid, Wm Dunlop, Jack Munro, Wesley McCann, Southwood Haydon and James Timmins. Symbolic floral offerings bore the silent testimony to the love and esteem in which the deceased was held by a wide circle of friends. Because of her long extended life, the deceased looked cheerfully to the future, and happy reunion with those who have predeceased her, among whom are four daughters. She leaves to mourn her loss, two daughters, Mrs Alex Barker and Miss Lucy McGill of Ottawa; and three sons, Messrs James, Jack, and Thomas McGill, all of the vicinity. In her declining years, Mrs McGill was faithfully attended by all members of the family and truly she appreciated such care. Mrs McGill possessed heart and sympathetic view that made her an invaluable companion, not only to those within the home but to friends and neighbours alike. Her simplicity, cheerful outlook, and sound feminine judgement found every difficult obstacle of life removed when the right principles were applied. Herself brought under the trials that come from natural causes in this life, she bore all with courage and fortitude because she was strong in that quality of character which raises above pain and disappointment. During all those years of happy home life there was created and developed a wealth of love and affection that made the hour of separation by death all the more difficult for those who mourn her loss. She was honoured by all for her deep religious fervour, for her broad interest in all missionary endeavours regardless of creed or denomination, and particularly for her rare generous and unselfish nature. Many have been those she helped over the rugged paths of life. She will be missed, but will remain in the hearts of friends as long as faith shall last. Well and truly might it be said of Mrs McGill "Her life was an inspiration and her memory had become a benediction."
