Dear mother of arthur and his wife Anne (Stewart) of Almonte; Helen May (Mrs. Donald MacHardy) of Arnprior and Raymond and his wife Isabel of Pakenham. Dear sister of Mrs. Agnes Currie; Jennie (Mrs. Ab Lotan) and clifford Melanson all of Almonte. Predeseased by 1 sister Mrs. Rachael Currie and 4 brothers Lorne; Bill; Joe and Kenneth. Also survived by 9 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Friends called at the C. R. Gamble Funeral home, 127 Church Street, Almonte. Funeral Service was held in the Chapel on Friday. Rev. Graham Mcleod officiated. Spring interment Union Cemetery, Pakenham.

MELANSON, Alexander Robert In hospital Ottawa, Ontario, Tuesday, April 5, 1960, Alexander Robert Melanson, beloved husband of the late Caroline Miller in his 94th year. Resting at the Kerry-Scott Funeral Home, Elgin Street, Almonte for service on Thursday, April 7 at 2 p.m. Interment Pak-enham United Cemetery. 38

After a lengthy illness, the death occurred in hospital in Ottawa on April 5th of one of the pioneers of Pakenham Township, in the person of Alexander Robert Melanson. He was in his 94th year and had lived all his life in Pakenham Township. Mr. Melanson was the youngest and last surviving member of the family of Alexander Melanson and his wife, Agnes M. Kettrick, the others being Mrs. Jas. Connery (Jennie), Pakenham; Joseph, Arnprior and Mrs. John Shane (Ellen), North Dakota. In 1895 he was married to Caroline Millar, who died in 1945. To them was born a family of four daughters and six sons. Those surviving are, Lorne, Pakenham; Mrs. J. C. Fulton (Effie), Cedar Hill; Mrs. James Currie (Agnes), Ottawa; Mrs. Stuart Currie (Ray), Blakeney; Clifford, Pakenham; William, Arnprior; Mrs. Thomas Fulton (Jennie), Pakenham and Joseph, Almonte. A son Kenneth, died in 1955 and another boy died in infancy. He also leaves 25 grandchildren and 32 great grandchildren. Since the death of his wife, Mr. Melanson made his home with his daughter, Mrs. T. Fulton. In spite of his advanced years, he retained a wonderful memory to the last and delighted in telling many interesting stories of pioneer days. He also continued to have a deep interest in local, political and worldwide affairs. Officiating at the funeral service held in the Kerry-Scott Funeral Home was his pastor, Rev. W. L. Henley of Zion United Church, Cedar Hill, who paid tribute to the character and disposition of the deceased. The large attendance of friends, and neighbours and the numerous floral offerings testified to the esteem in which he was held. The pallbearers were Messrs. Herbert Stanley, John Lawson, Hiram McCann, Clarence Boal, James Connery and Jack Forsythe. Interment was in the United Church Cemetery, Pakenham.

Alexander married Caroline Millar on 15 Oct 1895 in White Lake, McNab Township, Renfrew County, Ontario, Canada. Caroline (daughter of John Millar and Elizabeth Evans) was born in Apr 1874 in Pakenham Township, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; died on 27 Sep 1945 in Cedar Hill, Pakenham Township, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; was buried on 30 Sep 1945 in Pakenham Union Cemetery, Pakenham, Mississippi Mills, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada. Rev. H. A. Turner conducted the services. Mrs. Melanson died on Thursday Sept. 27. She was in delicate health for many years, owing to a heart condition. She was born in Pakenham Township 73 years ago, a daughter of the late John Millar and his wife, Elizabeth Evans. After her marriage 50 years ago to Mr. Melanson she went to live in Cedar Hill, where she resided until her death. Surviving are her husband, daughters, (Effie), Mrs. J. C. Fulton; (Agnes), Mrs. Jas. Currie, Clayton; (Ray), Mrs. Stuart Currie and Mrs. Thos. Fulton of Pakenham Township; five sons, Lorne, Clifford, Joseph, Kenneth of Cedar Hill and William of Arnprior. Of a family of five she is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Joseph Barrie of White Lake and Mrs. Robert Watchorn of Almonte. A large number of floral contributions were in evidence including, a spray from the Cedar Hill W. I. A Richard Evans settled in Ramsay at Con 1, Lot 20 E Settler number 71 on December 6, 1822. Referred as Lanark Military Settler in Letter to Major Hillier at Government House, York, U.C. Letter signed by Col. W. Marshall "Supt. " He also certified that this Richard Evans did not belong to the societies of emigrants from Lanarkshire Scotland and did not receive any assistance from Government in money or provisions. Letter dated December 24, 1825. Richard Evans emigrated from Ireland to Canada in 1822 and settled in Ramsay Township, Lanark County Ontario November 30th 1822. The family farm was located on Concession 2, lot 20 east just outside of Clayton. According to Lanark county (Ontario) census of 1861, his age is given as 61 years. The death of Richard Evans is entered in Ann Plunkett's family Bible as: October 9, 1874. The family farm passed to William and then to his son Abe and upon Abe's death the family homestead passed to George Pretty, a son of Janet Evans and George Goodson Pretty. The widow of George Pretty sold the homestead and the present owners are believed to be from Ottawa. Notes for Rachel Code: Her age is given as 67 years in the Lanark county census. The death of Rachel Code Evans is entered in Ann Plunkett's family Bible as April 9, 1879.
