    DEATH'S TOLL

    ?b?James Scott?/b?
Another old resident of Ramsay township passed away on Saturday, 20th inst., in the person of Mr Jas Scott, of the eighth line, after an illness of several weeks. He was in his 78th year, and his end came from the wearing out of a once rugged constitution until so weakened that strength was not left to withstand the onslaught of disease. He was ill for about eight weeks with Bright's disease and intestinal trouble. The late Mr Scott was born in Prince Edward Island, and is the last member of his father's family. He was a carriage maker by trade, having served his apprenticeship in Boston, and afterwards worked at Ashton. On leaving Ashton he and his brother Alexander, who died in January last. bought a farm on the eighth line of Ramsay, where they lived for some time. About 35 years ago, the deceased moved to Leckie's Corners and resumed work at his trade, but, like many another business, the introduction of factory built conveyances killed the demand for handmade vehicles, though for years after they came to be used. Mr Scott filled many orders even in the face of this opposition, because of the superior quality of the work he turned out. Of late years, though, his business had settled down to the sale of factory products and repairing. He was a man of sterling integrity, and was widely known as a man whose word could be relied upon. He was possessed of considerable intelligence, and was a great reader, and an interesting talker. he was an ardent Liberal in politics and was no mean opponent in a political argument. He was a prominent member of the Baptist church, and was one of its most consistent members and best supporters, both financially and in other ways. He was married, thirty years ago, to Maria Keays, who, with three daughters, Misses Laura, Lily and Edna, survive him. The funeral on Monday, notwithstanding the wet and disagreeable weather, was largely attended, the services being conducted by Rev A.H. Brace. Interment was made in the eighth line cemetery. The pallbearers were Messrs D. Metcalf, W.J. McDowall, J. Cummings, Arch Camelon, Ed Coon and Alex Metcalf.
