    Notes:

    (Research):1 Pioneer Willoughby #34127 b. _____
    m. Strays Willoughby #34128
Pioneer Willoughby, m. to Strays Willoughby are fictious people, created as a focal point for both known families and strays found principally in Beckwith and Montague Townships, Lanark County and Goulbourn Township, Carleton County, Ontario. Their apparent children (generation 2) are real people, but not known to be siblings of one another. People listed in generations 3, 4 , 5 etc are known descendants of those listed in generation 2. The surname 'Willoughby' is connected to a number of Irish families in Beckwith, Ramsay, Goulbourn and Montague Townships including settlers, the maiden name of several women and as a given name for children. Sorting out the records for Willoughby families is difficult, however the following guidelines help to sort out this family.

-- Issac Willoughby (1846 - 1899) who emigrated from Ireland to Almonte and Carleton Place is not known to be related to the Willoughby families who arrived in the initial settlement during 1816 - 1822 per conversation with the late Irma (Gardiner) Willoughby.. It should be noted that Issac was born in Co. Wexford and his mother's maiden name was "Butler"; a name associated with other Beckwith families also from Wexford..

-- There were two men named George Willoughby who seem to have arrived in the initial period of immigration beginning in 1818. Both were born about 1780, both married women named "Ann", both died in a few months apart in 1874, and both were buried in Beckwith Twp., one at Franktown and the other at Prospect, just five miles apart along concession 4.

"Prospect" George Willoughby from Co. Kilkenny married Ann Kerfoot. Information about this family is included in, "A Kerfoot History, Canadian Branch", by J. M. Morris, and self-published in 1953. Mr. Morris' wife, Eliza Kerfoot was a niece of Ann (Kerfoot) Willoughby, thus the list of children of George and Ann should be accurate. George and Ann are buried in the Prospect United Church Cemetery, located on land donated by Ann's brother, William Kerfoot. Morris lists the names of ten children born to George and Ann (Kerfoot)Willoughby. This George Willoughby is probably the person who was granted the crown patent for Lot 1, con 4 Goulbourn Twp, located a mile from the hamlet of Prospect in 1828, which indicates that he was assigned the property in 1821 or earlier. George is associated other with pioneers from Co. Kilkenny to Beckwith Township.

"Franktown" George Willoughby, from Co. Carlow who married Ann Shirley while in Ireland, first appears in Montague Twp. when he purchased Lot 25, concession 9 in 1836. Members of the Shirley family also immigrated and settled near George in Beckwith and Montague Townships. He may also be the John George Willoughby noted in some records.

Charles Willoughby, b. abt 1800 first appears in the 1851 census of Montague Twp.

Ellen Willoughby married James Simpson about 1829. She was a widow, previously married to a Mr. Lancaster. James Simpson was first married to Jane Dunfield. Only two records relating to her have been found: the death register for her son William W. Simpson lists her as his mother and a memorial regarding a land transaction involving William's father, James Simpson identifies his intention to marry Ellen.

An Ann Willoughby is first noted in the records as wife of Nicholas Garland who first settled on lot 20SW, concession 6, Beckwith. They were married in Ireland. She was a widow, first married to William Shore. Nicholas Garland sold his Beckwith property and obtained land near Ashton, a village which straddles the boundary between Beckwith and Goulbourn Townships.

Sarah Willoughby is listed as the wife of Edward Davis on baptismal records for her children. Edward Davis first settled on lot 19NE concession 5 Beckwith. It appears that Sarah died at a young age. Baptismal records have been found for four children of this family, including Maria Davis, b. 1834. Edward Davis sold his Beckwith property in 1837 and has not been found in the 1851 census records. In 1861, he was enumerated at the home of his nephew in North Gower Township, with occupation listed as a pedlar. A clue to Sarah (Willoughby) Davis' link to the Willoughby family is found in the 1851 census where a Maria Davis, age 17 i.e., b. 1834 is enumerated in the home of "Franktown" George Willoughby, possibly her grandfather.

Another Ann Willoughby b. about 1809, is listed as the mother of James Warren of Ramsay Township. In the 1861 census of Ramsay Township, her birth place is listed as Ireland.
