    Notes:

    Died:
One by one the old pioneers are passing to the great beyond. This week it is our duty to record the sudden death of Mr. David Gilliland of the 14th con. of Brooke, who answered the summons on Sunday evening about 8 o'clock, in the 70th year of his age. Deceased attended St. James Church on Sunday morning and appeared in his usual health. In the afternoon he drove to the home of Mr. Gilbert Woods, and had tea there. On his way home the cutter was upset a short distance from the house and after gathering up the robes and cushions Mr. Gilliland walked beside the horse. When he got to the stable his grandson came out to meet him and was told by the deceased to call his father, who on arriving on the scene found the old gentleman helpless, and he expired as soon as he was gotten into the house. Deceased was born, raised and spent his life on the farm on which he died. He took a deep interest in any movement for the betterment of municipal conditions and had convictions of his own on all matters which he freely expressed. He was a member of St. James Church and was widely known and respected. He served his country in the Fenian Raid, and received a medal and a scrip from the government. He was married twice. His first wife was Flora A. Searson and three children survive from the union, namely, John at home, Mrs. John Manders, 4th line, Warwick, and Miss Martha, Detroit. Another daughter, Mrs. Wilson Stewart, died about ten years ago. His second wife was Ann Kidd, and they had one son, Andrew of Manitoulin. His second wife predeceased him about two years ago. The funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon to St. James Cemetery, service being held in the church by the rector, Rev. S. P.Irwin, B. A., and considering the badly drifted roads, was well attended. The pall bearers were Wm. Greer, Robt. Long, James Glass, B. Richardson, Isaac Newell and Robt. Edgar.
