    Margaret Isabel McGill
Margaret Isabel McGill, a women who, with her late husband, pioneered the chinchilla industry in Canada, died June 24 at the Almonte Nursing Home, She was 97. She was born in Carp, Oct 26, 1895 to the late Robert Rivington and the late Minerva Eady, Mrs McGill attended school in Carp. She married the late Thomas McGill on "Echo Farm" at the corner of Dwyer Hill and Panmure Roads Jan 18, 1921. They honeymooned in Niagara Falls. The couple are survived by their four children: John Rivington McGill of Pakenham Township, Hurbert of Willowdale, Ont., Lois (Don) Munro of Almonte and Isobel (Stuart) Eastman of North Gower. Together the McGills operated the second chinchilla ranch in Canada, the first being in Alberta. They also raised foxes and mink on their Pakenham farm. Mrs McGill lived on the farm until the late 1980's when she moved into the Almonte Nursing Home. She was a faithful member of the Blakeney United Church and later the Pakenham United Church. Rev Heather Kinkaid led the funeral service at the Gamble Funeral Home June 27 at 2 p.m. Mrs McGill's remains rested at the Gamble Funeral Home until the burial at the Auld Kirk Cemetery. Her pallbearers were grandson Paul McGill, Steve McGill, Charles Munro, Larry Eastman and Andy Sadler and Clarence Timmons. The following obituary was Read by Lois Tuffin at the funeral service: "For those of you who don't know me, my family lived across a field from Mrs McGill and we adopted her as our own grandmother. Ours was in Nova Scotia so Gram filled in for all seven of us, and she did a great job. For the past few days I've been trying to remember when I first met Gram. But she's always been there. When I think of her I remember she always had a full candy dish, a sharp tongue and a love of football. You couldn't walk into that house when the Rough Riders were on TV, especially when Tony Gabriel was on the field. That was the only time I remember the candy dish being empty. As I came to know her better ? I worked for her and even moved in for a short period ? her tongue softened and she revealed her very fertile imagination to me. Most days when I'd arrive for a visit or after cutting the lawn, she'd tell me "Set the table for tea. I think the Queen's going to join us today." So I'd get out the place mats, the sugar and creamer set and the best tea cups we could find. But by the time the kettle had boiled and the tea was steep she'd say "It looks like the Queen couldn't make it. We'll just go ahead without her." We always had a grand tea anyways. For a youngster wrapped up in her own life, for me Gram opened up a whole world I'd rarely thought of before. I don't know haw many times I heard the story of her wedding day. There was a snowstorm. The minister was late. And after the ceremony they rode in a buggy to the train station near Blakeney. Other days she would relive the mid-winter trip to Richmond high school for a basketball game. The gym they played in had windows and the home team beat the visitors soundly, allowing them only one basket. The ride home in the buggy that night was cheerful nonetheless she said, as the girls sang songs while huddled under a bear skin lap robe. She's told me for years "the day you get married will be a big day. What a party." And I always told her "Gram, I don't like boys." But I did find someone and she was there the day we were married. By the time she's already moved into the nursing home and coming out to the wedding was exhausting for her, but she was there. The picture we have of her from that day we're smiling, but she is seated, staring off into space, a shadow of the person she once was. Although watching her strong spirit weaken saddened me, I can feel Gram's relief at finally moving on. For 15 years now she's been telling me "I want to go. I want to be with Thomas in heaven." Finally she'll have that peace. We're all going to miss her very much but I'm glad to see my dear friend's wish finally granted. God bless you Gram. I love and I wish a peaceful journey."
