    He learned the printing trade from William Pittard in the office of the old Almonte Times. From there to the Kingston Whigg, to Hamilton, then Toronto where he worked at the Catholic Register and he learned the typesetting machine. He returned to this position in 1918 and continued until 1945 when his health began to fail. At one time he gave up his trade and for approx. seven years conducted a furniture and undertaking business in Smiths Falls.

    The funeral of the late John Alexander Scott was held on Thursday afternoon, Dec 3rd, from the home of his brother W.E. Scott, to the Auld Kirk Cemetery. Service were conducted at the residence and grave by Rev J. Ray Anderson, pastor of Almonte United Church. Mr Scott died in Toronto on Monday, Nov 30th, in his 78th year. The body was brought here Wednesday afternoon and rested at the home of his brother until Thursday afternoon. Born at the Scott homestead on the first line of Ramsay near Union Hall, the late Mr Scott was a son of the late Wm Henry Scott and his wife, Mary Jane Kemp. He is survived by his wife, the former Fanny Johnstone; by a son, Kenneth Edward, on the mechanical staff of the Toronto Star, and two grandchildren; one brother, W.E. of Almonte and three sisters, namely, Mrs R.W. Young (Lucinda) 10th line of Ramsay; Mrs Wm Banning (Adeline) of Almonte and Mrs Robertson (Jean) of Edmonton. Deceased was educated at the rural school near his Ramsay home and in Almonte. While a young man, he learned the printing trade under the late Wm Pittard in the office of the old Almonte Times. From there he went to the Kingston Whigg, to Hamilton and Toronto. After a time he gave up his trade and for some seven years conducted a furniture and undertaking business in Smiths Falls. While in Toronto, Mr Scott had worked for the Catholic Register, where he learned the typesetting machine. He returned to this position in 1918 and continued in the same office until eight years ago when his health failed and he retired. Deceased was a life member of the Masonic Order, belonging to one of the Toronto Lodges. He was also a member of Withrow Park Bowling Club. He often visited his brother in Almonte during his long residence in Toronto and even after he retired and was in indifferent health he enjoyed coming here and having a holiday during which he went aback to the homestead to renew scenes of his youth.

    Mr. Wm. Scott, the well-known farmer of the 3rd line of Ramsay, died on Saturday last, from an attack of heart failure, and was buried in the cemetery at Boyd's Settlement on Monday, the funeral being largely attended. The late Mr. Scott was born in Ireland 78 years ago, and came to Canada in 1849 - forty-four years ago. He spent those forty-four years in Ramsay township. Mr. Scott was married three times, and had sixteen children, thirteen of whom survive, with fifty-three grandchildren and twenty-four great-grandchildren, to mourn his loss.

    The death took place at Govern, Sask, on Tuesday April 17 of Mary Jane Kemp, wife of Mr. Sherman Baldwin. The remains were brought East for interment at Almonte and were accompanied by her daughter Mrs. W.S. Baldwin, arriving on Saturday April 21. The funeral took place on Sunday from the residence of her son Mr. W.E. Scott, Elgin St., to the Presbyterian Cemetery of Ramsay.

    the late Mrs. Baldwin, who was the relict of William Scott of the Union Hall Section, was born on June 4, 1840, and spent sixty-eight years on the farm on which she was born, removing west to Govan, Saskatchewan, in March 1909.

    It was always the wish of Mrs. Baldwin that her remains would be laid in the Old Kirk Cemetery, 8th. line Ramsay, having attended the church there when a girl, as far back as the year 1850.

    She leaves beside her husband to mourn her loss three daughters and two sons; Lucinda, Mrs R.W Young, Ramsay; Jean, Mrs John Robertson, Alberta; Addie, Mrs W.S Baldwin, Saskatchewan; John A. Scott, Toronto and W.E Scott, Almonte. The youngest daughter, Minnie, Mrs. F.N Alexander, predeceased her seven years ago. All the members of the family were present at the funeral with the exception of Mrs. Robertson.

    The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Jas. D. McCrae. The pallbearers were Messrs M.R. MacFarlane , W.C Pollock, George A. Robertson, W.A. Nichols, Lawrence Naismith, Jos. Paul and John Lindsay.
