    Pioneer Munich Woman Dies Saturday - Mrs. Mary Jane Coffey Rites At Munich Tuesday, Interment At Emerado
    Mrs. Mary Jane Coffey, a pioneer resident of the Munich community, passed away Saturday, January 3, 1942, at her home in Munich after an illness of more than three weeks with a heart ailment.
    Funeral services were held Tuesday morning at the Zion Lutheran church at Munich with Rev. Thomas B. Lindsay of Langdon in charge. Interment was in the family plot in the cemetery at Emerado, beside the remains of Mr. Coffey. A quartet composed of Isaac Hoffman, H. J. Dick. H. F. Dick, and W. S. Janzen sang "Christian's Home in Glory" and "Rest in Jordon." Mrs. J. H. Bain of Langdon was at the organ.
    Mary Jane, daughter of William and Eliza Sykes, was born August 12, 1867, at Ashton, Ont. She came to Grand Forks county with her parents in 1878 and was married at Grand Forks in 1882 to Hugh John Coffey. The couple first farmed six miles west of Osnabrock, and in 1887 moved back to Grand Forks county, where they farmed until 1904 when they moved to the new town of Munich to operate a hotel. Mr. Coffey passed away October 12, 1939.
    Eight children were born to the couple and four survive. They are Mrs. J. H. Watters of Nashua, Mont.; Mrs. C. E. Render of Hannah; and John H. and William E. Coffey of Munich. Fourteen grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren also survive.
    Mrs. Steve Caul of Cartwright, Man.; and Mrs. George Batson of Conklin, Mich.; are sisters who survive and William Sykes of Cartwright is a brother who survives.
    The family was affiliated with the Presbyterian Church, and Mrs. Coffey was a member of the Order of Eastern Star.
    Those who came from a distance to attend the funeral were her daughter, Mrs. Watters of Nashua, Mont.; and Mrs. Render of Hannah; Rose Hamilton of Colorado Springs Colo.; and Mr. and Mrs. Keith Hamilton, Mrs. F. E. Hawley, Mr. and Mrs. L. H. Nickeson, and Mrs. J. H. Bain of Langdon.

    William was the youngest of eight children. He married Eliza Lyons on September 19, 1859 at Goulbourn. The family appeared on the 1861 and 1817 census in Goulbourn, where they farmed. In July 1878 the family boated across Lake Superior and entered the United States through the Port of Duluth, Minnesota. Traveling down the Red River into the Dakota Territory, they then settled near what is now Manvel. In 1883 the Red River overflowed, ruining the crops and forcing the family to move to the Osnabrock area. William became a US citizen on June 3, 1890, at age 51. Not long after the turn of the century, the family moved across the border to Cartwright, Manitoba, Canada. While visiting his daughter in Osnabrock, William died after a short illness from liver disease. He was buried at the old homestead in Osnabrock, later reinterred at the Union Cemetery. He was the father of ten children -- John, Elizabeth, Hiram, Margaret, Mary Jane, Amanda, William, Samuel, Sarah, and another William.

    Eliza was born, raised, and wed at Goulbourn Township. She married William Sykes, a farmer, on September 19, 1859. They farmed in the area until moving to the Dakota Territory in 1878. Soon after the turn of the century, they moved across the border to Manitoba. Eliza died at age 83 after contacting bronchitis, which proved too much for her advanced age. She had been living with her son William since her husband's death in 1904. She was the mother of 10 children -- John, Elizabeth, Hiram, Margaret, Mary Jane, Amanda, William, Samuel, Sarah, and another William. At the time of her death, Eliza was the grandmother of 41 and the great-grandmother of 51.
