    A Child's Peculiar Death
While partaking of dinner last Thursday noon, Willie, the five-year-old son of Mr and Mrs John Sutherland, of the Springfield section, swallowed a plum stone. Although the child had always experienced a difficultly in swallowing, this incident gave no cause for alarm until towards evening when the child became unable to swallow any food. Next morning his condition was unimproved and two town doctors were called in. They found it impossible to extricate the plum stone, which was firmly lodged in the gullet. Mr and Mrs Sutherland upon their advice took the child to St Luke's hospital, Ottawa, on the evening train, but he expired a few hours after entering the hospital. The remains were buried on Sunday last. Much sympathy is felt for Mr and Mrs Sutherland.

    ?b?The late Andrew Stevenson?/b?
A year ago last fall Mr Andrew Stevenson, whose whole life had been ceaseless activity, fell on the ice and striking his side on a stone received injuries, which held him prisoner for many months and which finally developed into cancer of the liver, causing his death on Thursday last, in his 67th year. Deceased was a son of the late Alexander Stevenson, half brother of the late Daniel Galbraith and his day one of the prominent figures in Ramsay and Lanark. For twenty-five years he was a justice of the peace and many are the interesting stories of the justice and wisdom which he brought to bear on the quarrels of the pioneer days. Besides Andrew, there were two other sons - Mr Norman Stevenson, Almonte, and Daniel, who died in Toronto in 1869. Mrs Rintoul of Western Canada and Mrs John Dunlop of the 2nd line, are sisters. The late Mr Stevenson lives nearly all his life of the old homestead on the 2nd line of Ramsay, and there in 1869 he was married to Sarah Taylor, a neighbour of the same concession, who survives him. Their union was blessed with a family of nine - Mrs J Sutherland, Almonte; Mrs I. Deachman, on the homestead; Mrs C. James, Almonte; Miss Effie, teacher, Clayton; Mrs Ernest Robertson, deceased; Miss Sadie, at home; Daniel at Kingsley, Man.; Jack at Lanigan, Sask.; and Wm. at home. About eight years ago Mr Stevenson left his farm and purchasing the property on the corner of the 9th line and Almonte street from Gillies Bros., has since made his home there. Mr Stevenson was widely known all over the riding of North Lanark and wherever he was known, had won friends by his sterling worth and modest honesty. His funeral on Saturday was the parting tribute from the friends of many years.

Andrew married Sarah Taylor in 1867. Sarah was born in 1845 in Ontario, Canada; died on 23 Jan 1936 in Almonte, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; was buried on 25 Jan 1936 in Auld Kirk Cemetery, Ramsay, Mississippi Mills, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

The many friends had scarcely returned from following the late Mr. Snedden to the grave before they were called upon to wend their way thither again to mark their respect for the memory of Mr. A. Stevenson, J. P. who has gone over to join the 'majority'. The deceased gentleman came to Canada from Glasgow, where he was born, with other members of his mother's family, together with his stepfather, the parent of the late Mr. Galbraith of whom the deceased was a half brother , in the year 1821. The family settled in Ramsay and at that time our late townsman, was about nine years old. He resided with his family for six or seven years and then went to Montreal, where he learned the trade of a cooper, remaining there about seven years. When he removed to Carleton Place and commenced a cooperage for himself. He followed the trade for two or three years , his shop, being on the site of Savallees hotel. In 1833 he married and moved to his own farm on the second Concession of Ramsay, where he remained until 1870 when he came to Almonte and has since resided here. Mr. Stevenson was a member of the township council from 1852-1856 and was for many years a Justice of the Peace. For over thirty years he was Pork Inspector for this district. After 49 years of married life he has left a widow who feels her loss keenly and a family of 2 sons and 3 daughters. The deceased was a very quiet unobtrusive man and was consequently not as widely known as many less worthy, but in all various positions, he was called on to fill, he brought a strong conscientiousness combining with a good share of common sense to bear and thus succeeded in establishing a claim to the respect of those with whom he was brought in contact , owing to frequent attacks of asthma he was latterly confined much to the house but he was not long confined to his bed. He died on Sunday morning last, at the ripe age of 77 years and was followed to the grave on Tuesday by a very large number of people of the town and country those who knew the late Mr. Stevenson were conscious that he felt severely the death of the late Mr. Galbraith from the shock of which he never recovered.

Alexander married Margaret Jane Smith in 1833. Margaret was born in 1805 in Airdre, North Lanarkshire, Scotland; died on 14 Jan 1889 in Almonte, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; was buried on 16 Jan 1889 in Auld Kirk Cemetery, Ramsay, Mississippi Mills, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada. ?b?The Late Mrs Stevenson?/b?
One of the few remaining Lanark County pioneers passed to her long home on Monday last in the person of Mrs. Stevenson, relict of the late Alexander Stevenson in her 83rd year of her age. The venerable lady had been ill for ten weeks with bronchitis which toward the end turned into dropsy. And although her sufferings were very severe she was never heard to murmur or complain and exhibited surprising fortitude. Deceased was one of the earliest settlers in these parts and saw Almonte when there was but one house erected there. She was born in Airdrie, Scotland in the year 1805 and when ten years of age saw the British troops returning from the battle of Waterloo. She came to Canada with her father (the late Andrew Smith) in 1821 being passengers by the ship "George Cannon." They came through to Lanark Village and thence to the township of Ramsay on the fifth concession of which they settled. She married the late Mr. Stevenson in 1833. Six children were born to them, five of whom survive, viz: Norman of this town; Andrew on the homestead, Ramsay; Mrs. John Dunlop, Ramsay; Mrs. John Rintoul of Huron Co. and Mrs. Thos. McFarlane, Petrel, N.W.T. All but Mrs. Rintoul were with their mother when the end came. Mrs. Stevenson lived on the homestead till 1871 when she moved to town and resided with her son, Norman, the balance of her life. She was a devout Christian woman and a firm adherent to the Presbyterian faith. The funeral took place to the Eighth line Cemetery on Wednesday afternoon and was largely attended.
