    Wilfred H. Metcalfe
    Following a lengthy illness, Mr Wilfred H. Metcalfe of Ramsay Township passed away at his home on Monday, July 15. Mr Metcalfe, who was in his 71st year, had lived in Ramsay all his life and attended the local schools in Almonte. He was the eldest son of the late Henry Metcalfe and his wife Elizabeth Reilly. He was a member and a former deacon of the Almonte Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, the former Jessie Anderson, four sons, Harry, Bill and Raymond of Almonte, and Wilmer of Kingston, and eighteen grandchildren. Three brothers, Bert Metcalfe of Toronto, Dr Herbert Metcalfe of Lindsay, and W. Arnold Metcalfe of Almonte, and one sister, Lila of Toronto also survive. The funeral was held from the Comba Funeral Home on Thursday, July 18. Interment was in the Auld Kirk Cemetery. The pallbearers were: Mrs Ivan Duncan, Mr Melville Paul, Mr Hubert Syme, Mr Andrew Ford, Mr Edwin Thompson and Mr Mel Foster.

    Wilfred married Jessie Bowes Anderson in 1917.     JESSIE B. METCALFE
    Mrs. Jessie Bowes Metcalfe, widow of the late Wilfred H. Metcalfe of R.R.2, Almonte, passed away on Thursday, January 9, 1975, at the Charlotte Nursing Home in Carleton Place, following a lengthy illness. She was in her 82nd year. She was born at Hopetown on February 8, 1893, a daughter of the late W. W. Anderson and his wife, Henrietta Watson. She received her education at Hopetown and at S.S. No. 14, Ramsay. Mrs. Metcalfe was a member of Almonte Baptist Church, and was married at the local church to Mr. Metcalfe, who predeceased her in 1963. She is survived by three sons, William G. and Raymond K., both of Almonte, and Wilmer W. of St. Catherines; two brothers, William J. Anderson, Almonte, and G. W. Anderson, Carman, Manitoba, and two sisters, Margaret, Mrs. H. Cable, Perth, and Lucy, Mrs. W. L. Thompson, of Ottawa. Predeceased are one son, Harry R.; a brother, Robert A. Anderson of Cornwall, and a sister, Mary, Mrs. Thomas Thompson of Newboro, Ontario. The funeral was held from the Comba Funeral Home, 127 Church Street, Almonte, on Saturday, January 11th at 2 p.m. with interment at Auld Kirk Cemetery. Rev. William Leaton officiated. Pallbearers were Robert Metcalfe of Ottawa, Perry, Bruce and Dale Metcalfe of Almonte, Garry Metcalfe, St. Catharines, and David Metcalfe, Guelph, Ontario.

    Henry Metcalfe
    After an illness from typhoid fever extending about three and a half weeks from which he was slowly recovering Mr Henry Metcalfe took a severe hemorrhage on Tuesday and passed away at the age of 49 years. He was a son of the late Hugh Metcalfe and had spent his life in Ramsay. He resided on the homestead until 1891 when he purchased what is known as the David McFarlane farm where he has since lived. He was married to Miss Reilly of Wakefield, who with six children survive -- Wilfred at home; Bert, a pupil of the Almonte high school; Leila, Arnold and Alexander going to school, and Herbert, the youngest who is ill with typhoid fever also. Mr Metcalfe never took an active part in public affairs, but was widely known for the kindness of his disposition, which won him many friends who sincerely regret his demise. In addition to his own family he is survived by his mother and the following brothers and sisters -- Robert of Pakenham; Dr. A.A., ex-mayor of Almonte; Hugh and William of Cando, Dak.; Lachlan of Kedrick, Idaho; John on the homestead, and Alex in Ramsay. Mrs James Nicholson of Bowesmont, Dak., and Mrs Jas Watt of Lanark township. The funeral takes place this (Thursday) afternoon to the eighth line cemetery.

    Henry married Elizabeth Reilly in 1891.     Mrs Henry Metcalfe
    Mrs Elizabeth Metcalfe, formerly of Almonte, passed away suddenly at her home on St Clair Ave., W., Toronto on Monday morning March 2nd, in her 84th year. Her husband the late Henry Metcalfe, predeceased her in 1910. Mrs Metcalfe was a daughter of the late William Reilly and his wife Mary Jane Johnson of Rupert Que. Following her marriage to Henry Metcalfe, son of the late Hugh Metcalfe and his wife, Jean McLean. W.A. Metcalfe, now operated his farm and dairy on the outskirts of Almonte. Left to mourn of her immediate family are one sister Belle. Mrs G.N. Crowe of Ottawa; one brother, Thomas Reilly of Toronto, also one brother-in-law, Dr. A.A. Metcalfe of Almonte; one daughter Lyla, Reg N., of Toronto; five sons, Wilfred H. Metcalfe of Ramsay; W.A. Metcalfe Almonte; A.H. (Bert) of Toronto; J.A. Metcalfe, Q.C., of Toronto and Woodbridge and Dr H.G. Metcalfe of Lindsay. There are also 15 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. The late Mrs Metcalfe was a devoted member of Bethany United Church and while in Almonte was made a life member of the W.M.S. Of late years, she attended St Clair Avenue United Church, Toronto. Service was held in Toronto at 1.30 p.m., and the remains were brought to the Comba Funeral Home in Almonte where the funeral service was held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, March 4th. Rev H.C. Wolfraim officiated at the funeral services which were largely attended. The pallbearers were five grandsons, Harry Metcalfe, Raymond Metcalfe, William Metcalfe, Wilmer Metcalfe, James Metcalfe and a cousin, Henry Metcalfe. Interment was in the family plot in the Auld Kirk Cemetery.

    Mr William W. Anderson
    Largely attended by friends and relatives, the funeral of the late William Waddell Anderson, pioneer farmer of Ramsay township, was held Saturday afternoon from the residence of his son, William J. Anderson, 9th line of Ramsay, with interment in the Auld Kirk cemetery. Rev Wm Aird of the Almonte Baptist Church, assisted by Rev J.F. Dingman of Carleton Place, and Rev W.J. McBurney of Reformed Presbyterian church, Almonte, officiated at the funeral. The pallbearers were six grandsons: Gordon and Robert Cable, Henry, William and Wilmer Metcalfe and Pte Robert Thompson of Petawawa. Mr Anderson had been ill three weeks and died in the Rosamond Memorial Hospital, Almonte, on Thursday. He was a member of the Almonte Baptist Church. The late Mr Anderson who was in his 81st year, was born in Lanark township, the son of Robert Anderson and his wife, Jessie Bowes. In 1881 he married Miss Henrietta Watson of Renfrew County, who predeceased him 12 years ago. in 1904 he moved to Ramsay and in late years lived retired with his son William. Surviving are four daughters and two sons, Mrs T.J. Thompson of Smiths Falls; Mrs H. Cable of Carleton Place; Mrs W.l. Thompson of Ottawa; William J. of Ramsay and George W. Anderson of Carman, Man. There are also one sister and four brothers, Mrs Alex McNabb of North Bay; Thomas of California; Robert and James of North Dakota and John C. Anderson of Fallbrook. Floral tributes were received from the Baptist Churches of Almonte and Carleton Place and from relatives and friends

    Hugh Metcalf
    Few men were better known and more highly respected than Mr Hugh Metcalf, of the 8th line of Ramsay, whose death was announced on Wednesday, at the age of 81. is death was not altogether unexpected. A decline set in last fall, from which he rallied a little this spring, but later acute indigestion seized him and finally dropsy, terminating his life. A man of sterling character and of superior education for his day, he held a foremost place among the early residents of Ramsay. e served in public capacities for several years as township councillor and school trustee. In politics he was an ardent Conservative, and in religion a Presbyterian. The deceased was born at Prescott in 1821, his parents being of English parentage. When but a year old his parents came to Ramsay and settled on the farm occupied by his brother, the late James Metcalfe. Upon attaining manhood he in 1845 married Jane McLean, youngest daughter of the late Lachlan McLean, and a year after his marriage he settled on the farm on the eighth line of Ramsay where he resided continuously up to the time of his death. His widow survives him, likewise his entire family of twelve, nine sons and three daughters. The sons are Messrs James, Robert and Henry and Dr. A.A. of Almonte; Hugh and William of Cando, Dakota; Lachlan, of Kendrick, Idaho; John on the homestead and Alexander, of Ramsay, Mrs Jas Nicholson, of Bowesmont, Dakota; Mrs Henry Eccles, of Steele, Dakota and Mrs Jas. Watt, of Lanark township, are his daughters. The funeral takes place this (Friday) afternoon at 2 o'clock.

    Hugh married Jean Lachlan McLean in 1845 in Pakenham Village, Pakenham Township, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada.     Link With Early Settlers Is Gone
    Mrs Hugh Metcalfe,
    Born Almost a Century Ago in Ramsay Township.
    One of the few remaining link with the early days of settlement in Ramsay was broken last week by the death of Mrs Hugh Metcalfe, at the age of almost ninety-seven. The funeral took place to the Presbyterian cemetery on Thursday, and was very largely attended. The late Mrs Metcalfe's maiden name was Jean McLean. She was the youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs Lachlan McLean, who settled in Ramsay in October of 1821, having come from the Mull of Cantire in Scotland. They travelled by way of the St. Lawrence to Prescott, across the country to the Rideau river,,and leaving it at Oliver's Ferry, came through Perth to Lanark village. At Lanark their daughter Jean a girl of ten years of age, died and hers was only the second interment in Lanark cemetery. Later on the same summer, Mr and Mrs McLean journeyed on, and settled on Lot No 18 on the 7th con of Ramsay. Two years later Mrs Hugh Metcalfe was born, and her parents named her Jean. Lachlan McLean was a veteran of the early days of the Napoleonic wars and saw service from 1779 to 1802 with the famous Cameron Highlanders. His discharge paper is dated 1802, and is now in the possession of his grandson, Lachlan McLean, of Beckwith. The late Lachlan McLean with his wife spoke Gaelic. He became very well known as the Ramsay Bard and had a distinct poetic talent. With the McLeans when they arrived in this district where the Blacks, Moores and Pauls, and a host of Scotch settlers, some of whom travelled on the same ship across the Atlantic. The late Mrs Metcalfe was the mother of a large family. They were: Christina, who is now Mrs Nicholson, of Bowesmont, Dakota; James, deceased; Lachlan, of Athabasca; Robert of Pakenham; Annie Mrs Eccles, of Medicine Hat; Alexander, of Ramsay; Hugh, of Comba, Dak; Jean, Mrs Jas Watt, of Lanark; Henry, deceased; William, of Dunseath, Dak.; John, on the homestead, and Dr. A.A. Metcalfe, of Almonte. The funeral took place from the residence of her daughter-in-law, Mrs Henry Metcalfe, of Almonte, the services being conducted by Rev. S. Gorley Brown.
