    Mr John Thom
In the death of Mr John Thom on Saturday there passed away one whose figure has been a familiar one in these parts for many years. He was born near Glasgow, Scotland, on August 13th, 1829, and was therefore in his 78th year. His parents came to Canada when he was two years of age and settled in Beckwith, five years later moving to the 12th line of Ramsay, where the deceased lived continuously until December, 1898, when he came of Almonte to live. In December 1854, He married Marion, youngest daughter of the late John Neilson, by whom he had eight children: Agnes, deceased; Margaret M., (Mrs Thos Cavers), Ramsay; Jane deceased; John, on the homestead; Mary A., Almonte; Marion M., deceased; Rev Geo W., Sundridge, Ont., and one died in infancy. In 1883, Mrs Thom died leaving six children to mourn her loss. Mr Thom married a second wife in the person of Marion McKinlay, who died three years ago. The deceased had three brothers; William, deceased; James, Carleton Place, and David, postmaster at Whitehurst, near Brockville; also two sisters: Mary (Mrs Jas Turner), Ramsay; and Margaret, deceased wife of the late Jas Waddell, Pakenham. The late Mr Thom enjoyed rugged health throughout his lifetime until about a year or more ago, when he showed signs of failing strength, and he succumbed on Saturday last, The funeral service on Tuesday was well attended and was conducted by Rev C.H. Daly of St. John's church. The pall-bearers were the nearest family relatives of the deceased, viz., his two brothers, two sons, son-in-law, and brother-in-law. The deceased was a man of uprightness and integrity ? one whose word was his bond. He was for years a member of the Reformed Presbyterian church and was so imbued with the spirit and teaching of that body that his whole life was an exemplication of the principles ...[last line fades out]..there.

    Notes:

    Died:
Last Monday Mr Matthew M. Neilson, youngest son of one of the oldest and most respected families in Ramsay, died at his home on the 11th line, at the age of 65. His father, the late Mr John Neilson, was one of the pioneer settlers of Ramsay, coming from Paisley, Scotland. His father ntook up land on the 12th line, and there the late Mr M. Neilson was born and lived until 1881, when he moved to the farm on the 11th line and lived on it till he died. About the year 1872 Mr Neilson purchased a farm from the late Mr Jas Gemmill, having altogether 350 acres. His death is the sixth in a family of four sons and four daughters, the surviving members being Mrs Gavin Hamilton and Mrs William Smith. The late Messrs John and James Neilson were his brothers. His third brother died many years ago in Bellville, where he was a prominent contractor. In the year 1858 he married Emeline Teskey, daughter of the late Mr John Teskey, of Appleton. Mrs Neilson and their three sons and four daughters are all living. The children are John, on the old homestead; George, of the Gemmill farm; Mrs Alexander turner (Annie); Mrs John Thom (Aggie); and Emeline, James and Jennie, on the homeshead. The late Mr Neilson was a man of unblemished character and in his comparatively early death the community has lost one of its best citizens. he was of a very quiet and unassuming disposition, but was more than ordinary intelligent, and took a lively interest in public affairs. For many years he filled the position of school trustee for the Appleton section, and was a member of the Ramsay board of health at the time of his death. The deceased had been ailing for three or four years with a kidney trouble. He was a kind-hearted man, who laboured hard for his children and had the satisfaction of seeing them all well provided for before he died. although death came to Mr Neilson at a comparatively early age, it found him well prepared to face the grim monster, and before dying he called his family to his bedside and expressed the hope to meet them all in the better land. His last words were "remember me." In politics the late Mr Neilson was a pronounced Liberal, and was well posted on the affairs of the country. In religion he was a devout member of the Presbyterian congregation at Appleton, in which he held office for a time as manager. The funeral, which took place on Wednesday afternoon, to the eighth line cemetery, was very largely attended. The services were conducted by Rev G. T. Bayne, of Ashton and Appleton, and the pall-bearers were Messrs D. Dowling, Thos Cavers, Robt Cavers, J. A. Teskey, William Paul, Jas Turner. The sorrowing ones have the sympathy of a large circle of friends.

    ?b?Obituary - Margaret Miller?/b?
One by one the early settlers are passing away from this scene of action - those who braved the hardships of pioneer life and carved out homes in the wilderness of Lanark county - leaving behind them names and memories which will Long live in the hearts of those who mourn their departure. On Sunday evening last another old resident was called to her reward in the person of Margaret Miller, relic of the late John Tom, sr., who was in her 89th year. Though she had reached such a great age, her death was somewhat unexpected, as she had been enjoying fairly good health, and only two weeks ago she attended the sacramental services in the Reformed Presbyterian Church in Almonte, of which denomination she had been a zealous member for over 60 years, and seldom was her place in the sanctuary vacant when circumstances permitted her being present, until the infirmities of old age prevented her from assembling regularly with God's people. Deceased was born in Lanarkshire, Scotland, in the year 1810, and there spent a good portion of her younger days. In 1832 she, accompanied by her husband and two children, left the land of their birth to seek their fortune in this country, and after living for a time in Ramsey they settled on the 11th line of Beckwith, where they remained for a few years, and in 1837 removed to the farm on the 12th line of Ramsey, where she died. On January the 4th 1841 her husband died suddenly leaving her with six small children (four sons and two daughters) the eldest about 11 years old, but with persevering industry and help of the children and friends she soon earned for herself and family a good, comfortable home, never forgetting her duty to God. The children theretofore mentioned are all living except Margaret (Mrs. James Waddell), of Pakenham, who died some years ago. The others were: John, on the homestead; William, of Pakenham; Mary, (Mrs. James Turner) and James, of Ramsey; And David, of Whitehurst. There are also alive 32 grandchildren and 40 great grandchildren. Our departed friend was a very highly respected resident, and will long be kindly remembered by those who had the pleasure of her acquaintance. The funeral took place on Tuesday to the family burying plot on the homestead and was very largely attended, testifying to the esteem in which deceased was held. The service at the house was conducted by her pastor Rev. E. M. Coleman, of Almonte, assisted by Rev. A. E. Michael of the same town, and Rev. G. T. Bayne, of Ashton. The pallbearers were her four sons.

At the residence of her son-in-law, Mrs Gavin Hamilton, in the township of Ramsay, on the 8th inst, Agnes Wilson, wife of the late John Neilson, sen, aged 86 years.

    1877, May
    A Hand-Written Note - In Memoriam
On the 8th of May last ? there passed from this life one of the first settlers in this part of the country, one who will be long lovingly remembered by a wide circle of relatives and friends. We refer to Agnes Wilson, relict of the late John Neilson, Sen., of Ramsay. The departed lady was a native of Paisley, Scotland, from which place she emigrated with her husband and a young family in the year 1820. Shortly after coming to Canada, the family settled in the Township of Ramsay then a wilderness of woods. By hard struggling and untiring perseverance the "bush lot" was soon transformed into a comparatively well cleared farm, with the comforts and conveniences of life coming in slowly but surely. In this home the late Mrs Neilson lived the greater part of her life, brought up a large family, of sons and daughters, and witnessed many happy re-unions of her children and children's children. Possessing many available qualities and living a consistent Christian life, she was deservedly greatly beloved and highly respected. Like the majority of her country-women she took great interest in leading topics of the day, keeping herself well-informed at to the doings of the outside world, so that her conversations was not-only entertaining but highly instructive. She retained her bodily-powers in wonderful vigour until near the last, but it was a source of great sorrow to her relatives that during the last two years of her life, her memory failed her, and that some months before her death the sore trial of a broken leg was added to her afflictions. From that trouble she never recovered. After lingering for a few months, at the ripe age of 86, she passed away to her rest ? "this rest that remaineth for the people of God." She was the mother of George Neilson, Esq, Belleville, whose sudden death was noticed a few weeks ago in this paper. She survived her husband 19 years and is survived by three sons and 3 daughters, 66 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
