    (Research):G. Caskey: Jim was the youngest of 10 children, 7 sons and 3 daughters, 5 of whom moved to Winnipeg in 1894 with their mother Sarah Coulter.
    Farmed in the Lily Field District, then worked as a street car operator, then as a City Health Inspector and the City Pound Keeper.
    For many years he worked to obtain equipment and facilities for various sports for young people of the community. Retired in 1943 and suffered a heart attack in July 1944.

    Notes:

    Excellent student, won gold watch for highest standing upon graduation from public school. Taught school for short time but did not like it - some of the boys were bigger than she was. Moved to Winnipeg in 1904. Worked as a house-maid for someone on William Ave. near Dagmar St.; opportunity to use her shorthand and typing as a stenographer at Bulman Bros. Printers, then with Western Iron Works.
    Took accounting course at the Cooper Institute on Portage Ave. Was unsuccessful in her law exam (felt it was because she was a woman) and could not become a Chartered Accountant. Entered the oratorical contest at Grace Church - her topic 'Women's Suffrage, her idol, Nellie McClung.
    Became bookkeeper at Walsh Land Co. and earned a very good salary for a woman. She and brother Jim financed the building of a house on Dearborn Ave. in Elmwood, built by Jim, where they lived with their mother. This was about 1908.
    Met James Coulter in Winnipeg, but waited 8 or 9 years for him to notice her. In 1912-13 James who was farming near Lilyfield, northwest of the city, reappeared. They were married over the objections of her mother. The bride was 5'5" and 105 lbs., wore a light brown suit with a hobble skirt. The couple travelled to Kenora for a honeymoon.
    Their first home was a suite in the Redwood Apts. at College and Main; then to Machary Apts at Machary and Charles; then to a house on Atlantic Ave. - back to a suite in the Bannerman Apts at Bannerman and Main. Jim worked for the Stree railway at this time. Later worked for City Health Dept
    Moved to house at 18 Smithfield in West Kildonan until he became the resident city poundkeeper. They moved to 1057 Logan Ave. in Mar 1920 and remained there until 1943 when Jim retired.


    (Research):G. Caskey: To Winnipeg in 1904. Before marriage she worked as an accountant, becoming first registered in the province. She was a champion of womens rights and a supporter of Nellie McClung. 16 Grandchildren, 23 Great Grandchildren. 'Lily Jane was a member of Sparling United Church, served in the UCW and the Winnipeg Presbytery. 61 family members celebrated her 100th birthday in summer of 1984. She resided at Golden West Centennial Lodge for 15 years where she was busy with handicrafts and reading. Ill for less than a week before death.
