    The Late James Wilson
As if in a quiet restful sleep all that is mortal of Mr James Wilson lies in his home on Cameron street, awaiting the last sad offices of the living to the dead. For some time past he had been in poor health, but had always been able to move about until only a few hours before his death, which took place on Tuesday, the result of a paralytic stroke from which he suffered on Monday. The late Mr Wilson, who was 72 years of age, was a son of the late William Wilson, and was born at Appleton, one of a family of whom only three - Andrew at Appleton, Joshua at Groton, South Dakota , and George at Salt Lake, are still living. Nearly forty years ago Mr Wilson was married to Miss Mary J. McPhail, and to them three children were born ? Jessie, who died several years ago, just as she was entering young womanhood; Flora at home, and William at Regina. Mrs Wilson is also still living. The late Mr Wilson was a contractor and architect, and through the Ottawa Valley there stand today many monuments to his refined taste and splendid workmanship. He was a man of more than ordinary intelligence, widely read and a most interesting companion. He was kind to and considerate of others, with a thoughtfulness beyond that which is not often found in man. He was a member of St Andrew Presbyterian church, and until prevented by physical incapacity was a regular attender at the church services. He was a Liberal in politics and in his time was an active and effective worker in the cause he espoused. Taken all around he was a man with few equals and was one whose passing away leaves the world the poorer in many ways, The funeral takes place on Saturday at 3.30 in the afternoon, the service at the house being a-half-hour earlier.

James married Mary Jane McPhail on 22 Nov 1871. Mary (daughter of Lachlin McPhail and Jessie Fumerton) was born on 8 Jul 1849 in Appleton, Ramsay Township, Lanark County, Canada West; died on 5 Apr 1927 in Almonte, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; was buried in Auld Kirk Cemetery, Ramsay, Mississippi Mills, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada. Mrs James Wilson
Mrs Mary Jane Wilson, widow of the late James Wilson, died at her home on Cameron street, Almonte, on Wednesday, April 5. She was 78 years of age, and died after a short illness. Mr Wilson, who was born at Appleton on July 8, 1849, was the daughter of Lachlin McPhail and Jessie Fumerton. She spent her girlhood in Appleton, and on Nov 22, 1871, came as a bride to the home in which she died. Mr Wilson widely known in this district as a skilled mechanic, contractor and builder predeceased her in 1916. One daughter Flora at home, and one son, William A., of Regina, survive. The funeral took place on Friday, April 8, to the Auld Kirk Cemetery, Rev J.M. MacCrimmon, of Bethany United Church, of which she was a member, conducted the service. The pallbearers were Messrs R. Fumerton, Frank Young, Joseph Paul, P.A.E. Young, J.H. Bennett and William Aitken. Amongst the many relatives and friends present at the funeral were Mrs Hennesey and Mrs Leggo of Coulonge, R. Fumerton of Smiths Falls, R. Fumerton of Appleton, R. Fumerton of Beckwith, and Hugh and John Metcalfe of Ramsay. The late Mrs Wilson was a woman of strong personality and scrupulous upright demeanor, but withal of quiet, homeloving disposition, who has left the impress of a sterling character not only upon those of her own household, but upon the whole circle of her acquaintances.

    DEATHS
At Appleton, June 25th, William Wilson, (father of Mr James Wilson, Almonte) aged 78 years.

1887, Friday July 1, The Almonte Gazette front page
    The Late Wm Wilson
After a lengthened period of extreme mental and bodily suffering Mr William Wilson, of Appleton, found a happy release in death last Sunday evening. No man in Ramsay more thoroughly enjoyed the respect and esteem of his friends and neighbours, and the announcement of his death carried deep and sincere sorrow to many a heart. The late Mr Wilson was a native of Cumbernauld, Lanarkshire, Scotland. He emigrated to this country with his father's family in 1828. Seven years later he cleared the land and built the house in which he has lived ever since. In the year 1836 he married Flora Lammie (who died about eight years ago), and had a family of two daughters and ten sons. Eight sons survive him, five of whom were with him in his last moments. For a number of years he had been an architect, and has left many monuments of his skill and handiwork. A man of more than ordinary intelligence, he had a well stocked library and well stored mind. He beautified his home, and planted with his own hands many trees, which are much admired by travellers passing his late residence. He was a member of the first council of the municipality of Ramsay for two years, but declined re-election. He was a consistent member of the Presbyterian church for fifty-two years, and an elder for the last fifteen. About three years ago he had an attack of effusion of blood on the brain, from which he never recovered, but gradually became feebler until his death. He long ago made his peace with God, and calmly awaited the time when he would be summoned home. For him death had no terrors, no sting. He had a firm abiding faith in his Saviour, and frequently during the last two years had besought God to take him to himself. "May our latter end be like his."

William married Flora Lammie. Flora was born in 1816 in North Ayrshire, Scotland; died on 25 Oct 1879 in Appleton, Ramsay Township, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; was buried in Auld Kirk Cemetery, Ramsay, Mississippi Mills, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
