Death: Mar. 15, 1894
Ransom County
North Dakota, USA
Died:
An old Ransom County settler died at his home at Plymouth on March 15, 1894. Patrick Madigan was at the ripe old age of 73 years. Patrick left Ireland approximately in 1847 during the great famine and landed in Bytown (now Ottawa) Ontario, Canada. He settled in Franktown, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada. He entered the employ of Mr. John Hutton where he worked for a number of years.
Patrick married Johanna Powers where they farmed at Franktown and later 500 acres at Beckwith.
In 1879, his son James left for the Dakota territory. The following year the entire family arrived in the United States in 1880 and took up land on the Fort Ransom reservation. He rode with his son James from Mapleton over the prairie seventy-five miles with an ox team to take up a claim which was part of the renowned Griswold Gold Mine area. In later years he carried the books for the Oliver Post Office in a sack from Lisbon. He lived to see the county develop from a wilderness to a fertile and rich place, railroads, mills and everything that goes to make up a county.
Patrick was naturalized on August 31, 1886.
Before there was a Catholic Church in Lisbon, some of the first Masses were said in the Madigan cabin.
He leaves three sons all in good circumstances; his widow well provided; also three daughters, Mrs. Ed (Catherine) Roach, Mr. William (Ellen) Kidd, and Mrs. David (Mary) Simpson.
He was buried at St. Aloysius Catholic Cemetery, Lisbon, March 17, and was followed by a large cortege of friends and neighbors.
