    Notes:

    Died:
On the evening of Mar 14, 1815 James was married to Miss Elizabeth Hagerty, by her uncle, the Rev. John Henry Hagerty, one of the early leaders of the Methodist Church in the United States. After the birth of their first child in 1816, they moved to Zanesville, Muskingum County, Ohio where they lived until Elizabeth's death in 1836. Then James moved his family to Warren County, Indiana across the river from where several of his sisters lived in Fountain County. In 1850 he was back in Ohio, living in Brown County, but in the early 1850's, James and all his children except George moved to Marion and Madison Counties in Iowa. They moved between Madison County, IA and Lancaster County, NE.
John Greenleaf [James Greenfield]Hilton, senior, was the father of Judge Hilton of Cincinnati, Ohio, a democratic politician known at that time all over the country. Mr. Hilton was a widower and lived at the home of his son Charles(no records of a son so named). Mrs. Mason(Lavina Hilton) and Mrs. W. W. Dunham (Mary Elizabeth Hilton) were his daughters. The two Hiltons and Mr. Dunham were democrats. All were deeply religious, with the possible exception of Charles and his wife. A regular debating society was organized and held regular meetings at the Hilton residence. Mr. Hilton, senior, although aged and somewhat decrepit, was mentally bright and a fine speaker. He and Mason were the leading debaters, but others, including myself, regularly took part. (Origin of Olathe, Nebraska, pages 206-207)
James was first buried in the Sand Hill Burial Place, Saltillo, Lancaster County, Nebraska. He was moved to the Roca Cemetery in 1891.

note: 1850 Federal Census and 1856 Iowa State Census data indicate he was born in 1787-1788.

Two sons, James and James R. were born between 1821 and 1831. They probably died in infancy or early childhood.

James married Elizabeth Hagerty in 1815. Elizabeth was born on 27 Jun 1795 in Virginia, United States; died on 13 Oct 1836 in Ohio, United States. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
