    GILES, Paula Mae

    After a long and courageous will to live, she passed away peacefully with her family by her side, at Fairview Manor, Almonte, Ontario on Monday, November 26, 2007. Dearly loved wife of the late Mervin Giles. Mother of Greg (Angela) of Cedar Hill, Tanya of Pakenham, Tracey (Steve Rothwell), Brent (Shelly), all of Almonte and Chris (Julie) of Vars. Also survived by 7 grandchildren, Jennifer, Corbin, Colin, Gavin, Rebecca, Zack and Megan. Will be missed by several aunts, uncles, brothers-in-law, cousins, nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her parents Allan and Dorothy (Paul) Duncan. Our family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and entire staff of the Almonte General Hospital, Rosamond Wing and Fairview Manor for their care and compassion through the past years. You made our Mom's last few years better than we could have hoped.     THOMAS H. GILES
    Following a short illness, Thomas H. Giles passed away on Thursday, May 29th, at the R. M. Hospital, Almonte, in his 85th year. Born near Clayton, he was a son of the late James Henry Giles and his wife, Mary Smith. In 1912, he married Margaret Ellen Smithson who predeceased him in 1940. He is survived by three daughters (Myrtle), Mrs. O. MacDowall; (Mildred), Mrs. Russell Lowe, both of Pakenham; (Eleanor), Mrs. Howard Boal of Almonte and four sons, Harvey, Willard and Mervin, all of Pakenham and James of Edmonton, Alta. A daughter, Marion, died in 1933. He also leaves three sisters, (Eliza Jane) Mrs. Richard Evans of Burritts Rapids; Mary A. of Clayton; (Margaret), Mrs. Jas. Jackson of Edmonton, Alta., and one brother, Edward Giles of Almonte. William, deceased. The funeral was held from the homestead on Saturday, May 31st, at 2 p.m. to St. Mark's Anglican Church, Pakenham, with Rev. A. Irwin officiating. Service at the house was conducted by Rev. Wm. Sunter, minister of the United Church, Pakenham. Pallbearers were Murray Reid, Gordon Donaldson, Jack Forsythe, Keith Johnston, Holly Smith and Ira Smith. Interment was in St. Mark's Cemetery, Pakenham.

    Thomas married Margaret Ellen Smithson in 1912.     Mrs. Thomas H. Giles
    People of this district were shocked to learn of the death, Wednesday morning of Mrs. Thomas H. Giles of Cedar Hill, following only a few days' illness. She was 49 years of age. Mrs. Giles was the former Margaret Ellen Smithson, a daughter of the late Samuel Smithson and his wife Margaret Loney of Darling. She was married 28 years ago, to Thos. H. Giles and has since resided on the homestead where she passed away. To this union were born three girls and four boys, namely Myrtle, Mrs. A. McDowall, Pakenham Township; Mildred, Eleanor, Harvey, James, Willard and Mervin at home. In addition to the above members of the family she is survived by her husband, three sisters and six brothers. The latter are Mrs. John Box, White Lake; Mrs. Adam Lotan, Almonte; Mrs. Wm. Nero, Arnprior; Richard and Christopher of Saskatchewan; George of Blakeney; William and James of Almonte, and John of Cedar Hill. The late Mrs. Giles was a member of St. Mark's Anglican Church, Pakenham. She took an active part in the life of her home community and was held in high esteem by a wide circle of friends. The funeral will be held from the family residence, eighth concession of Pakenham, on Friday, Oct. 18th, to St. Mark's Church, Pakenham, arriving there for service at 2 p.m. standard time. Interment will be made in the church cemetery.

    ALLAN M. DUNCAN

    Following six month's critical illness, Allan M. Duncan passed away at his home on the 11th line of Ramsay Township on Monday, October 31, in his 41st year.
    A son of Mr. Edward Duncan and his wife, Beatrice Miller, now of Carleton Place, he was born on the Duncan homestead on the 11th line.
    All of his life was spent in this community and prior to his marriage in June 1941, he purchased the John Ryan farm which he farmed successfully up to the time of his illness.
    He leaves his wife, the former Dorothy Paul, and one daughter, Paula, aged seven.
    Besides his father and mother, he is survived by three sisters and five brothers, namely: Mabel, Mrs. Wm. Taber of Toronto; Muriel, Mrs. Walter Redden of Kingston; Rae, Mrs. Allan Lytle of Arnprior; William of Pine Portage, Ont.; Morden, on the homestead; Kenneth, 8th line of Ramsay, and Gordon and Hugh, 11th line of Ramsay.
    Two brother are deceased, Harold and Bert, who was killed overseas in World War II.
    Mr. Duncan's long illness was all the more tragic because he was suffering from leucaemia [leukemia] for which there is no known cure. Of the three local young people whose illness last spring was diagnosed as leucaemia, he alone responded to treatment temporarily and hope for his ultimate recovery was held for some time.
    Held in the highest regard as a neighbor and by a host of friends, his passing is a loss to the community that is deeply regretted.
    The funeral was held on Thursday, November 3rd, at 2.30 o'clock p.m. from his late residence to the Auld Kirk Cemetery. Rev. H. C. Wolfraim, minister of Bethany United Church of which deceased was a member, officiated. Interment was in the Auld Kirk Cemetery.

    James Giles
    On the evening of May 22nd, Mr. James Giles of Cedar Hill peacefully passed away in his eighty third year, after an illness of about three months. He was always blessed with exceptional health, and was very energetic until February. The late Mr. Giles was a son of the late Thomas Giles of the third concession of Ramsay and is the last of a family of thirteen. When but a lad of nine years of age his father died, and his first thought was to earn and help his widowed mother. In 1866 he married Mary Ann Smith of Pakenham who predeceased him two years and five months ago. To them were born six children Mrs. Richard Evans (Eliza Jane), of Burritt's Rapids. Mrs. James Jackson, (Margaret) of Edmonton, Miss Mary Agnes and Wm. John of Clayton, James Edward of Cedar Hill, and Thomas Henry on the homestead, and seventeen grandchildren. The late Mr. Giles was a very prosperous, hardworking man, he bore his sickness patiently, without a murmur. The funeral took place on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. from his late residence to St. Mark's church and cemetery, and was largely attended. Many coming from Ottawa, Almonte, Clayton and the surrounding district to pay their last tribute to one who was so widely known Rev. G. A. Brunet, Parish Priest, officiated at the house, church and grave, There was a beautiful wreath from the family, spray from Mr and Mrs. John Fulton J r . The pallbearers were Mr. Edward McMunn, Mr. Richard Evans, (son-in-Iaw), Mr. Robert J. Giles, Mr, Max Smith, Mr. W. Reid and Mr. Fred Forsythe.

    Edmund Harvey Duncan
    The death of Edmund Harvey Duncan occurred in an Ottawa hospital on December 13 in his 74th year. The funeral was held Sunday afternoon from the Alan R. Barker Funeral Home to St Andrew's Presbyterian Church where the service was conducted by Rev T. DeCourcy Rayner, Assisted by Rev Gordon Taylor. Interment was made in the Auld Kirk Cemetery, Almonte. He was born January 20, 1878, on the 11th line of Ramsay, son of the late James Duncan and Elizabeth Lockhart. The youngest in a family of 11, he leaves two brothers. Albert, Regina, and Jack Vancouver; two sisters, Elizabeth, Mrs T.R. Paterson, Almonte, and Aggie, Mrs Ben Holden, Calgary, Alta. Five brothers predeceased him, Robert, James, William, Hugh and Sidney, also a sister, Margaret. Mr Duncan was married to the former Beatrice Miller, of Ramsay, on December 29, 1903. The couple had a family of eight sons and three daughters: Mabel, Mrs W.J. Taber, Toronto; Harold died in 1935; Muriel, Mrs W.L. Redden, Kingston; Allan died in October, 1949; Morden, at home; Rae, Mrs A.D. Lytle, Arnprior; William, Niagara Falls; Kenneth, Ramsay; Gordon and Hugh, Ramsay. Flying Officer Robert Duncan was killed on active service in January, 1944. Mr Duncan was born and raised on the farm on the 11th line and resided on the homestead until 1945, when he retired to Carleton Place. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church, Almonte, and an elder of that church for several years. He was also a member of the board of managers and representing elder when he moved to Carleton Place. he attended St Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Carleton Place, from 1945 and became an elder. The pallbearers were Albert Duncan, William Paterson, Clarence Paterson, Robert Duncan, James Duncan and Ross Craig.

    Edmund married Beatrice Fedora Miller on 29 Dec 1903 in Ramsay Township, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada.     Beatrice F. Duncan
    The death of Mrs Beatrice F. Duncan occurred at her home, 30 Sarah Street, Carleton Place, following a heart seizure. She was 88. The former Beatrice Fedora Miller, she was born at Almonte on May 4, 1881, a daughter of the late Mr and Mrs David Miller. She received her education at Almonte Public and High Schools. She was married to the late Edmond H. Duncan in Carleton Place in 1904, and resided for many years of the 11th line of Ramsay. Mr and Mrs Duncan retired from the farm about 25 years ago, when they moved to Carleton Place. Mr Duncan predeceased her in 1951. Mrs Duncan was a member of St Andrew's Presbyterian Church Almonte. She was a life member of the church organizations, an avid reader and gardener. Surviving are five sons and three daughters, William of Toronto, Gordon of Cobden, Morden, Kenneth and Hugh of Almonte; Mabel (Mrs Taber), Toronto; Muriel (Mrs. Redden), Kingston, and Rae, (Mrs Lytle), Arnprior, and one sister Mrs M. Gilles of Winnipeg, Manitoba. She was predeceased by three sons, Harold, Bert and Allan. The funeral was held from the Alan R. Barker Funeral Home, McArthur Ave., Carleton Place, on Saturday afternoon, May 24, with burial at Auld Kirk Cemetery. Rev D.J. Hill of St. Andrew's Church conducted the services.     One of Almonte's hightly respected citizens, William Melville Paul passed away in hospital May 10, 1971, after a short illness.

    He was born November 3rd, 1895, the son of the late William Paul, and his wife, the late Christina Porterfield. He was married in December 1919 to Eva Jane Drummond, who predeceased him in March 1947.

    Surviving are two daughters, Dorothy (Mrs Louis Parent), St Jean, Quebec; Doris (Mrs Harvey Cochran), Willowdale; two sons, William D (Bill), Ottawa and R Clare of Port Credit; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

    Also surviving are two sisters, Olive (Mrs Albert Naismith), of Ramsay, and Edna (Mrs Ed Rose) of Almonte.

    The service was conducted from the Kerry Funeral Home by Rev Robert McCrea of Almonte United Church, May 13 at 2 o'clock. Interment was in the Auld Kirk Cemetery.

    The pallbearers were William Toop, Jack Virgin, James Paul, Robert Naismith, Mervin Giles and Donald Cochran.

    The passed to rest at the Rosamond Memorial Hospital on March 13, Eva Jane Drummond, wife of Melville Paul. She was 50 years of age. A life-long resident of Lanark county, Mrs Paul was a daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Samuel Drummond.

    Mrs Paul is survived by her husband, two daughters (Dorothy) Mrs Allen Duncan and (Doris), Mrs Harvey Cochrane and two sons William and Clare, one grandaughter Paula Duncan, one sister (Iva) Mrs Clifford Greene of Kinburn and one brother, Harvey L. Drummond of Ottawa. Another brother Wilber L. Drummond predeceased her 19 years ago. She is also survived by two half sisters, Aida and Agnes Drummond and two half brothers, Howard and Ralph Drummond all of Ramsay.

    The funeral was held Friday, March 14, from her late residence on Martin Street to the Auld Kirk Cemetery. The service was conducted by Rev W.J. Scott of Bethany United church of Almonte assisted by Rev Wm Aird.

    The pallbearers were: Messrs John Chapman, Albert Naismith, Edward Rose, Wilbert Cochrane, Alton Matthews and Victor Kellough.

    Among those from out of town who attended the funeral were: Mr M.C. McPhail, principal of Kemptville Agricultural School, Mr Parish, Mr Parks. Members of the teaching staff and a number of the students of Kemptville Agricultural School.

    Among the beautiful floral tributes were wreaths from the Almonte Public Utilities Commission, Almonte Branch Canadian Legion, Almonte Boys' Athletic Society, Fifth Form Almonte High School, Ramsay W.I. Circle No 4 of Bethany Church and Almonte Junior Farmers.
