    AGNES DUNCAN

Agnes the daughter of James Duncan and Elizabeth Lockhart was born September 14th 1872 in Ramsay Township Lot 10, Concession 11. Agnes was married in Almonte, Ontario in 1899 to Ben Holden. Agnes and her husband travelled to Western Canada the same year of their marriage and settled in Glenboro, Manitoba. They later moved to Brant Alberta where they farmed until 1943 when they retired and moved to Calgary, Alberta.
In 1905 when her mother died she is noted as from Pilot Butte, Ass.

The following is taken from a Calgary paper:

    "OSTOGENARIAN ARTIST
This is a Saturday for coincidence, I journeyed up the North Hill Friday to see Mrs. Agnes (Duncan) Holden, who still enjoys a fair reputation as an artist despite her age -86yrs. While we were chatting she turned to me and suddenly announced she had been in the Regina cyclone of 1912.
Agnes is better known here for her work with paints, although that reputation can go back 60 years ago to Almonte, Ontario - a farm community outside Ottawa. I'm not a judge of art but the best illustration I saw in the Holden home was a winter landscape that was done in 1899. Mrs Agnes Holden grew up on the farm and came from a large family. When she married she had seven daughters.
On the day of the tornado (June 30,1912) she had four children but they were away from the main path of the storm.
Funny thing about this interesting lady -- she is in despair of her immediate family because she insists upon living alone (since her husband's death in 1954) but she brings up an interesting philosophical point. She claims that she enjoys her housework and still has time every day to go shopping and see the downtown sights.
She has been very cute with the paintings. Already she has given away 22 scenes to children and grandchildren. Secretly hoping to come up with another artist, I suppose. However I notice the 1899 landscape still hangs in the living room and I unhesitatingly place it as good professional work."

Agnes and Ben Holden marked their golden wedding anniversary September 1949 with all seven daughters present.

    ?b?Obit. - James Duncan?/b?
One of the very few remaining links between the past generation and the present was removed this (Thursday) morning when Mr. James Duncan was called away from the surroundings in which he had spent so long a life. The late Mr. Duncan was born on the homestead in Ramsay, now occupied by his youngest son, Mr Ed Duncan, His whole life was spent there until a little over five years ago, when he removed to Almonte, to spend with Mrs. Duncan in the declining years of their lives in the comfortable home he had provided. On March 25, 1854, he was married to Elizabeth Lockhart, who was born in Scotland and came to Canada with her parents when nine years of age. To Mr. and Mrs. Duncan eleven children were born; all of whom are still living. The sons are Robert at Pilot Mound; William, James, John and Albert at Regina; Hugh at Strathcona; Alexander Sidney on the McFarlene farm and Ed on the homestead; the daughters are Maggie (Mrs. Butchart) and Lizzie (Mrs. Dr. Paterson) in Almonte, and Aggie (Mrs. Holden) at Pilot Butte, Man. The first break in the family circle occurred four years ago when Mrs. Duncan passed away, and now Mr. Duncan makes the second. Mr. Duncan was of a retiring disposition and never sought public office of any kind, preferring the quiet of his own home. He was of a robust constitution, and even until not long ago he thought little of a tramp out to the farm and spending the day busily working about because he loved to work. The funeral has been delayed until Sunday afternoon to enable members of the family at a distance to attend. It will take place at 3 o'clock to the eighth line cemetery.

    ?b?Mr. Duncan's Funeral?/b?
The funeral of the late James Duncan took place from his home on Elgin street to the the Eighth Line Cemetery on Sunday afternoon, and was attended by a large concourse of people both from the town and township in which his long life had been spent. Two of his sons, James of Regina, and robert from Pilot mound, were among the cheif mourners. The pallbearers were three who were near neighbours of Mr. Duncan when he was on the farm - Messrs John Neilson, Graham Forgie and Donald Stewart, and three of his nearby town neighbours - Messrs HH Cole, S Young and John McFarlane. The funeral services were conducted by Rev C. H. Daly, of St. John's church, of which Mr. Duncan had been a member for many years. Among the floral tributes was a beautiful wreath from the family.
