But few of the hardy pioneers remain who cleared the forest and paved the way for the fine farms and comfortable homes that now dot the surface of Lanark County, and the number has been lessened by the death last Sunday, at his home in Upper Pakenham, of Mr Alexander Lindsay, who had attained the patriarchal age of 91 years. He was a strong man all his life, and had the use of all his faculties to the last. Aday or two previous to his death he was able to split wood and do some other work around the house. Saturday morning he took ill, but rallied until early the following morning, when another attack proved fatal. the late Mr Lindsay was born in Scotland in 1804; came to Canada with the early settlers in 1821 - seventy-four years ago; married in 1830 (Mrs Lindsay died January 30, 1892 aged 85); and for over sixty years resided continuously on the farm on which he died, enjoying the esteem of his friends and neighbours. His children are Mrs Alex Duncan of Wyoming, Ont, William, in Australia, James D., of Kars, Carleton County; Misses Mary and Lizzie, of Fargo, Dakota; Mrs James Marshall, of Oil Springws, Ont; Miss Susan and Mr Alexander Lindsay, on the homestead. Most of the above were home to the funeral which took place on Wednesday afternoon, to the eighth line cemetery. A very large number turned out to pay the final mark of respect to one who had his part in struggles incident to pioneering life in this section, and who for almost three-quarters-of-a-century was identified with the interest of the neighbouthood in which he lived. Rev J.M. McLean conducted thew religious exercises.

    Died:
Mrs Lindsay of upper Pakenham, who died on the 30th ult., after a couple of weeks illness from influenza, was born in Ruglin, Scotland, in the year 1807, and had reached the venerable age of 85 when the inevitable summons was received. She emigrated to Canada with her people seventy-two years ago, when she was 13 years of age.She arrived in Lanark Township in 1820; was married in March 1830; and lived on the present Lindsay homestead until her death. she possessed wonderful vitality, and but for the grippe might have added many years to her already long and useful life. Her husband several years her senior, survives, but we regret to learn that he is also a sufferer from the prevailing trouble, and is dangerousely ill. Their children are: Mrs Alex Duncan, of Wyoming; William, who is in Australia; Misses Mary and Lizzie, of Fargo, Dakota; James D., of Kars, Carleton County; Mrs James Marshall, of Oil Springs; and Miss Susan and Alexander Lindsay, on the homestead. For the half-century Mr and Mrs Lindsay have been among the most respected residents of Lanark County, and the sympathy of all is with the patriarchal husband in his sickness and bereavement, Keen regret is felt at the loss of each link in the chain that binds the present with the past, as in this case. Very few of the pioneers now remain to recount the traits and viciswsitudes through which they passed in the settlement and development of this part of the province. [Maiden Name: Jane DUNCAN]
