    Died:
Businessman (ice cream and chocolate). William Neilson was born near Almonte, Ontario, but left his family's farm to earn a living. Stops in Rochester, Almonte and Toronto proved generally unsuccessful, forcing Neilson to join a brother in North Dakota until he could regain his financial footing. His break came through the production of ice cream in Toronto; first as a sideline to his grocery and then as his primary business in 1893. The firm branched into the production of confectionery in 1908. Chocolate bars followed soon afterward to further diversify the product line. William Neilson suffered a stroke while visiting Almonte in December 1914. A month later he stumbled in the company's Gladstone Ave. factory and, while recovering from that injury, suffered a second stroke, from which he finally succumbed. While William Neilson passed away in Toronto, the firm being his name went from supplying trans-Atlantic luxury liners to being the largest manufacturer of ice cream in the British Empire. The company continues as a dairy operation, having sold the ice cream business in 1990 and the confectionery line in 1996.

William married Mary Eva Kaiser on 6 Oct 1875 in Brockville, Grenville County, Ontario, Canada. Mary was born on 18 Jul 1846 in Rochester, Monroe County, New York, United States; died on 8 Apr 1923 in Toronto, York County, Ontario, Canada; was buried in 1923 in Forest Lawn Mausoleum, Toronto, Toronto Municipality, Ontario, Canada. Word reached Almonte last Thursday that Mr John Neilson, of Pakenham, and formerly of Ramsay, had died suddenly that morning at the house of his daughter, Mrs McLean, of the Village of Pakenham, whither he had walked from his own house on the Arnprior Road, about a mile. He complained on arriving of not feeling well, and Mr McLean, seeing that he was in pain, got him to lie down, and fetched a doctor, but by the time the latter arrived Mr Neilson was feeling better. The Dr however, advised him to keep himself quiet, and he would write out a perscription, and the deceased asked him, to add the instructions for taking it also, as his memory was getting bad. The Dr seated himself at the table and commenced writing, but shortly after turning around to speak to his patient, when he found that he had ceased to breathe. The deceased was the brother of Messrs Matthew and James Neilson, of the 11th line of Ramsay, and was related by marriage to many of the residents of that neighbourhood, who heard of his sudden end with deep regret. Mr Neilson up to about two or three years ago lived on the town line between Ramsay and Huntley, and then he sold his place and went to live in Pakenham to be near his daughter. the deceased was well known as a great reader and a man of more than ordinary intelligence, profiting by what he read. To a very large number of friends who highly respected him, the intelligence of his death was a source of great grief, and all beat testimony to the virtues of the deceased.
