    ROBERT DUNCAN

Robert Duncan was born near Almonte Ontario, December 7, 1854. His parents, James and Elizabeth Duncan, had a family of eight boys and three girls. Robert was the eldest.
As money was scarce Robert was obliged to leave home in his early teens to make his way in the world. Equipped with a team of horses and a sleigh he found work in logging camps along the Petawawa and Mississippi Rivers. Wages were a dollar a day. In the spring of each year he came back to help his father with the farm work. He would go back to the "shanty" as the camps were called, for the winter months.
In the spring of 1878 he and some other young fellows decided to go West. They left Almonte on May 5th and travelled by train and boat to Emerson and finally to Winnipeg. They worked there for the summer. He told of getting his wagon, with a load, stuck in the Red River mud of what is now main street. The load was removed from the wagon but even then the wagon had to be taken apart to free itself. Having met some men who had been farther west, Robert decided on their advice to go too. The result was that he filed on a parcel of land the west half of 12-3-12. This land was owned and operated in recent years by his only son James Hamilton Duncan until his death, November 1972 in Pilot Mound. Robert then went back to Ontario logging camps for the winter.
In the spring of 1879 James Duncan gave his eldest son, Robert a team of horses, a wagon and provisions for the trip west. Again he went to Emerson and then drove west along the Boundart Commission Trail to his homestead near Pilot Mound. This 100-mile trek was completed on May 29. Some grain was planted and a log house was built that summer. The remains of this pioneer dwelling exist on the present farm-site. This log house is a very special one. In 1879 there was not a minister or a church in which to conduct divine services. A meeting was held in Robert Duncan's log house to organize the first Sunday School. The next year, 1880, a meeting was held there to organize the Goudney School district. Until then the community was identified only by their post office, Preston, about three miles west of the present town of Pilot Mound.
In 1880 Robert Duncan and William Butchart (who was later to marry Robert's sister, Margaret Jane) bought a horse powered threshing machine. They threshed most of the grain in the settlement that fall and winter as this was one of the first threshing machines in the area. In those days the harvested grain was stacked, pending threshing operations so that work on the land could continue until freeze-up.
Robert Duncan returned home in the spring of 1881, returning to Pilot Mound in June with his bride, Ellen MacPherson Hamilton. The young bride could hardly visualize the ruggedness of the new country she was coming to, in comparison with the relatively gently and settled Ottawa Valley countryside which had been her home from birth. On the last leg of their trip from Emerson to the homestead, the young couple enjoyed the warm hospitality of the Mennonite homes as they passed through their communities. At last they reached the end of the hundred miles and arrived in the Goudney District. That summer the grass was so tall that even the cows seemed lost. When Ellen opened her kitchen door she could hear the cows mooing and running towards her but all she could see above the tall grass was their heads and tails.
"Bear stories are always interesting, especially when they have the added interest of being true. One day when Robert was harvesting a field of oats with his three-horse binder he saw a bear coming towards him. At the same time a neighborhood "character" an old chap who loved to hunt and fish, and who dropped in frequently to visit the Duncans arrived on the scene. Unfortunately his gun was not powerful enough to reach the bear from his distance. Robert unhitched one of the three horses and mounted it. Horse and rider pressed the attack but the Duncan mount was a colt that had never been ridden and he ran wild. However, the battle continued with added force and finally the bear, exhausted, lay still on the ground to be dispatched at close range by the itinerant hunter.
In the early 1900's a Mr Dearlove needed power for his newly-constructed brick yard north of town. He contacted Robert Duncan for the use of his steam engine which had replaced horsepower on the Duncan farm. It might be noted that the Duncan's second home succeeding the beloved log shack, was a spacious dwelling made of red brick from the Dearlove yard.
It is no exaggeration to say that Robert Duncan was an active leader in the community endeavors. Before 1905 when the Statute Labor Law was in effect, he was a path master. This meant that he was to see to it that roads and trails were kept passable in his section of the township. In later years he served as a councillor in the Rural Municipality of Louise and President of the Pilot Mound Agricultural Society. During his tenure with that Society he promoted the formation of a Board of Lady Directors. It proved to be a valuable innovation.
He was also a devoted church goer, serving as Sunday School superintendent and elder on the Presbyterian Church Session and following church union in 1925 he served with the United Church Session until his death in 1943.
His wife Ellen had many talents and interests. She was renowned for baking and butter-making. Her baking skills were such that local merchants would have her test newly arrived flour shipments. She could tell them how many loaves could be made from a hundredweight.
In 1911 she won a sweepstake prize for her butter making at the Winnipeg Exhibition, also first prize for a tub of butter at the Chicago Fair. She encouraged boys and girls in furthering farming skills, a work now done by the famous 4-H Clubs. She held sewing and cooking classes in the local school (after 4:00 PM.)
She was a member of the Ladies Agricultural Society her husband founded, a Charter member of the Women's Institute, Life member of the Red Cross and life Member of the Women's Missionary Society. Robert and Ellen Duncan turned the farm over to Their only son Jim in 1930, retiring to Pilot Mound. Mrs Duncan passed away in 1937, her husband in 1943. Both of them had been truly public-spirited and contributed enormously to the economic and cultural health of the community they had seen grow from pioneer days.
In the United Church at Pilot Mound are two beautiful candelabra, presented by members of the family in memory of their parents. These are fitting memorials to two who had shed the light of life on many a pathway.

Robert married Ellen McPherson Hamilton on 10 Jun 1881 in Almonte, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada. Ellen (daughter of Gavin McPherson Hamilton and Margaret J. Neilson) was born on 21 Sep 1859 in Almonte, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; died on 1 Jan 1937 in Pilot Mound, Pilot Mound Census Division, Manitoba, Canada; was buried in 1937 in Greenwood Cemetery, Pilot Mound, Pilot Mound Census Division, Manitoba, Canada. ?b?Obit. - James Duncan?/b?
One of the very few remaining links between the past generation and the present was removed this (Thursday) morning when Mr. James Duncan was called away from the surroundings in which he had spent so long a life. The late Mr. Duncan was born on the homestead in Ramsay, now occupied by his youngest son, Mr Ed Duncan, His whole life was spent there until a little over five years ago, when he removed to Almonte, to spend with Mrs. Duncan in the declining years of their lives in the comfortable home he had provided. On March 25, 1854, he was married to Elizabeth Lockhart, who was born in Scotland and came to Canada with her parents when nine years of age. To Mr. and Mrs. Duncan eleven children were born; all of whom are still living. The sons are Robert at Pilot Mound; William, James, John and Albert at Regina; Hugh at Strathcona; Alexander Sidney on the McFarlene farm and Ed on the homestead; the daughters are Maggie (Mrs. Butchart) and Lizzie (Mrs. Dr. Paterson) in Almonte, and Aggie (Mrs. Holden) at Pilot Butte, Man. The first break in the family circle occurred four years ago when Mrs. Duncan passed away, and now Mr. Duncan makes the second. Mr. Duncan was of a retiring disposition and never sought public office of any kind, preferring the quiet of his own home. He was of a robust constitution, and even until not long ago he thought little of a tramp out to the farm and spending the day busily working about because he loved to work. The funeral has been delayed until Sunday afternoon to enable members of the family at a distance to attend. It will take place at 3 o'clock to the eighth line cemetery.

    ?b?Mr. Duncan's Funeral?/b?
The funeral of the late James Duncan took place from his home on Elgin street to the the Eighth Line Cemetery on Sunday afternoon, and was attended by a large concourse of people both from the town and township in which his long life had been spent. Two of his sons, James of Regina, and robert from Pilot mound, were among the cheif mourners. The pallbearers were three who were near neighbours of Mr. Duncan when he was on the farm - Messrs John Neilson, Graham Forgie and Donald Stewart, and three of his nearby town neighbours - Messrs HH Cole, S Young and John McFarlane. The funeral services were conducted by Rev C. H. Daly, of St. John's church, of which Mr. Duncan had been a member for many years. Among the floral tributes was a beautiful wreath from the family.

    Mr Gavin Hamilton Dead
One of Ramsay Township's Earliest Settlers and Most Useful Residents Called Away
The news on Monday morning of the death of Mr Gavin Hamilton, of Ramsay, came as a shock to his many friends. For some time he had not been enjoying robust health, but until a few weeks before his death he was able to be about and to attend to light duties around his home. On Sunday afternoon he was bright and cheerful, and chatted pleasantly with his brother, Mr Duncan Hamilton, and others who had called to see him, but before another morning had dawned the silver cord was loosed, and his spirit had taken its flight to Him who gave it. The deceased was born in Paisley, Scotland, and was the eldest son of a family of eight children. These are Dr John Hamilton, of Pompeii, Mich; Margaret (Mrs Frank Hall, Appleton), who died very suddenly some years ago; Martha (Mrs Robt Leishman), in Almonte; Thomas, in Huntley; Douglas, in Michigan; Ellen (Mrs John McCallum), Colorado, and Duncan, in Almonte. When about fifteen years of age he with his mother and brothers and sisters came to Canada to join his father who had come out a couple of years before, and being the eldest of the children upon him fell the duty of sharing with his mother the responsibilities of the journey. The family lived for a few years in Carleton Place, where his father, who was a tanner, followed his trade. He then went to Pakenham, where he continued in the same business, the family removing to Huntley township, and from that time forward following the business of farming. Mr Gavin Hamilton took up the same occupation, and went on to the farm upon which he spent the remainder of his life in 1855, in which year he married Margaret Neilson. To them a family of six children were born, one of whom died in infancy, and another, John, died about seven years ago. Those living are Thomas in Smith's Falls; James C., at Moose Jaw, N.W.T.; Mrs Robt Duncan, at Pilot Mound, and Marion at home. Mrs Hamilton and Mrs John Hamilton also survive. In his young days, Mr Hamilton did not have an opportunity of acquiring an education, as he never went to a day school and only attended a night school until he was eight years of age, after which he had to go to work. But what was lacking in that respect was made up for in his intelligence and good natural ability. He, early in life, began to take an interest in both municipal and political matters, and was widely read and well versed in the affairs not only of his own community and county, out of the country at large. He was appointed assessor of Ramsay in 1871, which office he held for nine years. In 1880 he resigned the assessorship and was elected to the council, and one year later he was chosen reeve, and for sixteen years served the township in that capacity. In 1887, the first year in which county councillors were elected to that office, Mr Hamilton was one of those chosen to represent Galbraith division, and was returned at each succeeding election until this year, when he sustained his first defeat in thirty-two year, and on that occasion his defeat was the result of overconfidence on the part of his friends In 1883 Mr Hamilton was elected warden of the county and discharged the duties of that office with his usual efficiency and with satisfaction to all concerned. While in the county council he was a member of the most important committees, and there, probably his best work was done, his sterling good sense and practical knowledge of details of county council matters being brought to bear with most beneficial results. The deceased was a Liberal in politics, and on more than one occasion his name was mentioned in connection with the candidature of North Lanark, but that was an honour he persistently declined. In religion he was a Presbyterian, and was for many years a much respected member of the session of St Andrew's church. The funeral took place on Wednesday, and was attended by a large number who gathered to pay last tribute of respect to one whom in his lifetime they had esteemed and honoured. The pallbearers were chosen from among those with whom he had sat in county council. They were: Messrs Pattie and Cram, Carleton Place; Mrs W.J. Rintoul, Darling; and Messrs A.M. Grieg, and Geo W. Willoughy, Almonte, and Mr Adam Johnston, Ramsay, who acted in Mr C.H. Ferguson's place, he having been unavoidably prevented from attending. It is needless to say that the sympathy of the community goes out to the bereaved ones, for no good man can go from any community without being missed, not only by his own family and friends, but the wider circle who have been helped by his life or benefited by his usefulness.

Gavin married Margaret J. Neilson on 18 Aug 1855 in Almonte, Lanark County, Canada West. Margaret (daughter of John Neilson, Sr. and Agness Wilson) was born on 4 Jul 1823 in Ramsay Township, Lanark County, Canada West; died on 23 Aug 1904 in Ramsay Township, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; was buried on 25 Aug 1904 in Auld Kirk Cemetery, Ramsay, Mississippi Mills, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada. Mrs Gavin Hamilton
After a short illness, Mrs Margaret Hamilton, widow of the late Gavin Hamilton, laid down the burden of this life, and event which terminated a long and useful existence. The deceased was a daughter of the late John Neilson, and was born in Ramsay over eighty-one years ago, and was one of a family of four sons and four daughters. Her brother's were John, George, James and Matthew Neilson, and her sisters, Mrs Wm Lang, Mrs Wm Smiths and Mrs John Thom. The deceased was married to Mrs Thos Lang who died not long afterwards and later on she married Mr Garvin Hamilton. Hers is the third death in the family within a short time, Mr Hamilton having died the end of March of last year and her son, James C. at Moosejaw, a few months ago. The late Mrs Hamilton was a woman much loved and respected -- a woman whose life was an unremitting testimony to her faith in the living principals of Christianity with which she identified herself in the days of childhood and consistently espoused throughout her long life. The funeral took place this (Thursday) afternoon to the eighth line cemetery, and was attended by many who were desirous of showing their respect for her memory.
