    Died peacefully, surrounded by his loving family at Extendicare in Peterborough on Monday, October 20, 2003 in his 86th year. Garnet was the beloved husband of Dorothy Margaret (nee Aitken) for over 55 years. Much loved and gentle father of John McCracken and his wife Evelyn of Peterborough, Ken McCracken and his long time friend Marion Wehner of Toronto and Janice and her husband Kevin Pichette of Burlington. "Poppa" to Conor and Finbar McCracken; Caitlin and Colleen Pichette. Dear brother of Gladys and her husband Otto Groskorth of Newmarket; brother-in-law of Lillian McCracken of Ottawa. Garnet was pedeceased by his parents Robert and Mary and his brothers Earle, Bruce and Nelson and his wife Hazel and sister Kathleen and her husband Jim Bedell. He retired after 20 years as an elementary school teacher for the Peterborough Board of Education after having served 25 years in the R.C.A.F. Garnet was a member of The Golden Tones Choral Group for many years; an avid Petes fan; an Elder of St. Andrew's United Church. Friends may call from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Thursday at COMSTOCK FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION CENTRE, 356 Rubidge Street, Peterborough, (705) 745-4683. Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 24, 2003 at St. Andrew's United Church, 441 Rubidge Street, with Reverend Ann Foster officiating. Cremation will follow with interment in Carleton Place. Memorial donations to a charity of choice would be appreciated by the family.

    Huntley is an historic township originally part of Carleton County in eastern Ontario, Canada. Huntley was located in the western part of the county,Huntley was located in the western part of the county, bordered to the northwest by Fitzroy Township, to the northeast by March Township, to the southwest by Ramsay Township and to the southeast by Goulbourn Township. It includes the communities of Carp, Corkery, Huntley, Manion Corners, and Westwood.
    The township was established in 1841. The first settlers in the area were immigrants from Ireland in the early 19th century. Huntley took its name from Huntly Castle, associated with Charlotte Lennox, Duchess of Richmond, whose husband Charles served as Governor General of British North America from 1818 to 1819.
    By 1866, there was a Post Office in the township of Huntley and John Graham served as postmaster.

    In 1974, it was amalgamated with Torbolton and Fitzroy to form West Carleton. In 2001, West Carleton became part of the new city of Ottawa.
