    As the old year ended, there also ended the life of Cedar Hill's oldest pioneer, William James Lowe, whose passing occurred at Fairview Manor, Almonte, on December 29th, 1977. He was 96 years of age. Jim, as he was known, was a highly respected citizen and neighbour. He worked hard and was always happiest when he felt he had completed an honest day's work and respected all others that did so. He was blessed with a remarkable memory so he was a real source of history to listen to. He never lost interest in people or happenings around him. But the years took their toll and Jim grew weak and frail. On December 29 his Master called him to his everlasting peace and rest. Jim has led precious memories of a good life lived not only for himself but for others as well. Born at Cedar hill on March 5th, 1881, Jim was the son of the James Lowe and his wife, the late Amelia Morphy. He attended S.S. No 8 Cedar Hill and later went into the business of farming which he pursed all through his working years until his retirement a few years ago. He was a member of the United Church of Canada. On March 15, 1910, he was married at Union Hall to the former Annabelle Kirk, who predeceased him. On the 26th of June, 1943, at Almonte, he married the former Sarah Ritchie Nontell, also predeceased. Left to mourn his loss, is a step-daughter, Irene (Mrs Elmer Goodellow), Almonte, three sons, Arthur and Russell of Cedar Hill and Herbert of Braeside. three daughters, Mabel (Mrs William Barr), Almonte, Amelia (Mrs Harvey Wagner) Smiths Falls, and Margaret (Mrs Osler Steen), Bells Corners. A sister, Lila (Mrs William Scott) predeceased him. Funeral services for Mr Lowe were held at the Gamble and Comba Funeral Home, Church Street, Almonte, on December 31st, 1977 at 2 p.m. Rev Cecil Dodds, of Pakenham, officiated at services held at the funeral home and at Auld Kirk Cemetery. Pallbearers were grandsons Frederick, William and Donald Lowe and James Steen; a cousin Arthur Morphy ad a neighbour Edgar Ritchie. Honourary pallbearers were Leonard Fulton, James Giles, Gordon Boal, William Lawson, Clifford Smith, and William Bolger.

    William married Annabelle Kirk in 1910. Annabelle was born on 13 Apr 1886 in Ramsay Township, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; died on 23 Feb 1942 in Almonte, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; was buried in Auld Kirk Cemetery, Ramsay, Mississippi Mills, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada.     Mrs Wm J. Lowe
    The death occurred in Almonte on Monday, Feb 23rd, of Mrs William J. Lowe of Cedar Hill, in her 56th year. Mrs Lowe had been visiting her sister, Mrs James Dunfield for a week and although she had been in poor health for the past 15 years, death was unexpected. A daughter of James Kirk of Almonte, and his late wife Anna Bell McCrae, she was born in Ramsay township. She married Wm J. Lowe 31 years ago and they resided on the farm in Pakenham until the time of her death. She a member of Zion United Church, Cedar Hill. Surviving in addition to the husband are three daughters and three sons, namely, Mabel Kirk Lowe and Margaret at home; Anna Bell Amelia, Reg. N. at the Great War Memorial Hospital at Perth; James Arthur, Herbert H. and Russell F. at home. Her father, James Kirk, is a resident of Almonte as also is a sister, Mrs Grace Dunfield. A brother Herbert, lives at Wahnapitae, Ont. The funeral was held from the family residence, 6th concession of Pakenham on Wednesday afternoon to the Auld Kirk Cemetery Rev H.A. Turner conducted the services. The pallbearers were Jack Dowdall, Percy Stanley, Wm Fulton, Wilbert Morphy, Henry Morphy and Eric Floyd.

    THOMAS H. GILES
    Following a short illness, Thomas H. Giles passed away on Thursday, May 29th, at the R. M. Hospital, Almonte, in his 85th year. Born near Clayton, he was a son of the late James Henry Giles and his wife, Mary Smith. In 1912, he married Margaret Ellen Smithson who predeceased him in 1940. He is survived by three daughters (Myrtle), Mrs. O. MacDowall; (Mildred), Mrs. Russell Lowe, both of Pakenham; (Eleanor), Mrs. Howard Boal of Almonte and four sons, Harvey, Willard and Mervin, all of Pakenham and James of Edmonton, Alta. A daughter, Marion, died in 1933. He also leaves three sisters, (Eliza Jane) Mrs. Richard Evans of Burritts Rapids; Mary A. of Clayton; (Margaret), Mrs. Jas. Jackson of Edmonton, Alta., and one brother, Edward Giles of Almonte. William, deceased. The funeral was held from the homestead on Saturday, May 31st, at 2 p.m. to St. Mark's Anglican Church, Pakenham, with Rev. A. Irwin officiating. Service at the house was conducted by Rev. Wm. Sunter, minister of the United Church, Pakenham. Pallbearers were Murray Reid, Gordon Donaldson, Jack Forsythe, Keith Johnston, Holly Smith and Ira Smith. Interment was in St. Mark's Cemetery, Pakenham.

    Thomas married Margaret Ellen Smithson in 1912.     Mrs. Thomas H. Giles
    People of this district were shocked to learn of the death, Wednesday morning of Mrs. Thomas H. Giles of Cedar Hill, following only a few days' illness. She was 49 years of age. Mrs. Giles was the former Margaret Ellen Smithson, a daughter of the late Samuel Smithson and his wife Margaret Loney of Darling. She was married 28 years ago, to Thos. H. Giles and has since resided on the homestead where she passed away. To this union were born three girls and four boys, namely Myrtle, Mrs. A. McDowall, Pakenham Township; Mildred, Eleanor, Harvey, James, Willard and Mervin at home. In addition to the above members of the family she is survived by her husband, three sisters and six brothers. The latter are Mrs. John Box, White Lake; Mrs. Adam Lotan, Almonte; Mrs. Wm. Nero, Arnprior; Richard and Christopher of Saskatchewan; George of Blakeney; William and James of Almonte, and John of Cedar Hill. The late Mrs. Giles was a member of St. Mark's Anglican Church, Pakenham. She took an active part in the life of her home community and was held in high esteem by a wide circle of friends. The funeral will be held from the family residence, eighth concession of Pakenham, on Friday, Oct. 18th, to St. Mark's Church, Pakenham, arriving there for service at 2 p.m. standard time. Interment will be made in the church cemetery.

    Death has claimed Mrs. James Lowe, sr., of Cedar Hill, who passed away on Sunday morning, and had been ailing for some time. Her maiden name was Amelia Murphy, and her former home was White Lake. There were two children in the family, James, who is on the homestead, and with whom the mother lived, and Leila, who was married to Mr. James Scott, and who died about 'eight years ago. The funeral of the late Mrs. Lowe took place on Tuesday afternoon to the Pakenham Anglican cemetery, and was largely attended.

    James Giles
    On the evening of May 22nd, Mr. James Giles of Cedar Hill peacefully passed away in his eighty third year, after an illness of about three months. He was always blessed with exceptional health, and was very energetic until February. The late Mr. Giles was a son of the late Thomas Giles of the third concession of Ramsay and is the last of a family of thirteen. When but a lad of nine years of age his father died, and his first thought was to earn and help his widowed mother. In 1866 he married Mary Ann Smith of Pakenham who predeceased him two years and five months ago. To them were born six children Mrs. Richard Evans (Eliza Jane), of Burritt's Rapids. Mrs. James Jackson, (Margaret) of Edmonton, Miss Mary Agnes and Wm. John of Clayton, James Edward of Cedar Hill, and Thomas Henry on the homestead, and seventeen grandchildren. The late Mr. Giles was a very prosperous, hardworking man, he bore his sickness patiently, without a murmur. The funeral took place on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. from his late residence to St. Mark's church and cemetery, and was largely attended. Many coming from Ottawa, Almonte, Clayton and the surrounding district to pay their last tribute to one who was so widely known Rev. G. A. Brunet, Parish Priest, officiated at the house, church and grave, There was a beautiful wreath from the family, spray from Mr and Mrs. John Fulton J r . The pallbearers were Mr. Edward McMunn, Mr. Richard Evans, (son-in-Iaw), Mr. Robert J. Giles, Mr, Max Smith, Mr. W. Reid and Mr. Fred Forsythe.

    James married Mary Ann Smith in 1866.
