John Young Is Killed At Main Street Crossing Prominent Almonte Citizen Meets Death While Driving Buggy over Railway
Jury Returns Verdict of Accidental Death but Recommends that Improvements be Effected in order that View of Railway be Less Obstructed.
Mr. John Young, a well-known citizen of Almonte, was killed at the main street crossing of the C.P.R. on Saturday evening about 7 o'clock. He was driving across the railway in a buggy when a freight train travelling west struck him. From the evidence at the inquest held in the council chamber on Wednesday evening with Dr. A.A. Metcalfe, the coroner presiding it appeared that two freight trains had passed through Almonte within fifteen or twenty minutes on Saturday evening. Possibly Mr. Young, had judged that after the first had gone through the rails would clear for a considerable time. At any rate the second train was almost upon him when he observed it. It was about 75 feet away. He was affected with deafness, so that he did not hear the whistle of the locomotive the ringing of the locomotive bell and the ringing of the crossing bell, all the evidence showed that the usual precautions were observed, and that the train was not travelling at an excessive speed. W. Kenny, of Smiths Falls, the engineer of the train stated that there was no particular order for passing through the town of Almonte. They could go up to 30 miles. He states in reply to Dr. Metcalfe that slow up orders had been received since the accident. Both he and Leslie Ritchie, the fireman, saw Mr. Young endeavouring to cross the rack after he saw the oncoming train. When Mr. Young observed it he urged his horse forward but apparently it became frightened and balked. Mr. Ritchie thought he could have stopped instead of trying to cross. However, he made the effort to get his horse and buggy across the rails and failed. The train caught them, the horse was cut in two, and carried some distance. Mr. Young was thrown out and injured beyond hope of recovery. His skull was fractured, his jaw and both legs broken, and there were internal injuries as well. He was taken at once to the R.M. Hospital but died immediately upon his arrival there, some fifteen minutes after the accident. He never regained consciousness. It seems that the only persons in Almonte who witnessed the accident were Mr. Robert Ford and two children. Mr. Ford gave evidence at the inquest. He said he anticipated the accident. He saw Mr. Young drive up Main Street, and when he heard the approached of the train he remarked to a friend with him that he was sure the accident would happen. Mr. Young's horse was waling as he approached the crossing. Mr. Matthew Ballantyne was called upon as a witness. He was at the Power House at the time. He did not see the accident, however, although he noticed that the train had slowed up, He did not see Mr. Young drive up the street. A number of C.P.R. officials were examine and gave technical evidence the most vital of which appeared to be the difficulty of seeing a train on account of the flour mill obstructing the view. The width of the road on the north side of the railway is 53? feet on the south side 56 feet while the width of the C.P.R. crossing is about 70 feet. The jury was as follows: Messrs. John Blakeley, foreman, A. Johnston, Wm. Carnochan, Frank Murray, Robt. Needham, Samuel Davis, George Bradford, Walter Lockhart, Ed. Nicholson and Sidney McLean. They brought in a verdict of accidental death, recommending that improvements be effected in order to give a better view of the crossing an approaches. Rev. J.H. Rutherford of the Cameronian church conducted the funeral services in the absence of Rev. J.I. McCrea. The deceased is survived by two brothers and one sister; Robert Young, of Ottawa; Andrew Young and Mrs John McFarlane of Almonte. Four brothers, Alexander, William, Peter and Stephen, and three sisters, Mrs Angus Sutherland, Mrs John McCarter and Mrs Henry Cavers predeceased him. He was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs Peter Young of Bennie's Corners who died some years ago and was in his 83rd year. For many years he carried on a blacksmith business in Almonte retiring several years ago. The pallbearers at the funeral were six nephews; Vincent Young, Herbert Young, Peter Young, M.R. Young, Peter Sutherland and E.H. Knight.

John married Margaret Toshack. Margaret was born about 1836 in Ramsay Township, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

[Note, while the memorial marker for Alexander Nicholson and Janet McIntosh state that they were "natives of Inverness Scotland," it is unlikely that Alexander was born in Inverness. His legal death record states he was born in Perthshire. A search of births of Alexander Nicholsons during the early 1790's show zero in Inverness and multiple for Perthshire. Furthermore the memorial marker states slightly incorrect dates and ages indicating that the memorial marker may have been placed some time afterward by adult children or grandchildren whose knowledge of their birth origins may have been faulty. Since it is not likely Alexander was a native of Inverness, perhaps his parents were. Furthermore, it is likely that his wife Janet McIntosh was a native of Inverness (as the McIntosh clan hails from there).

    Another Link Broken
This week it becomes our painful duty to chronicle the death of another of Canada's veteran pioneers in the person of Mr Peter Young, of Ramsay, which took place on Thursday evening last, at his late residence on the 7th line. Up to a week before his death he had been in his usual health, and gave promise of living many years; but a cold was contacted which gradually wore out the aged fellow; and although surrounded by every comfort, and supplied with everything that loving hearts and willing hands could bestow, yet the silken cord was snapped asunder, and the spirit returned to God who gave it, again verifying the truthfulness of the old adage, "the young may die, but old must." By death Mr Young, Ramsay loses one of its most highly esteemed residents and the news of his demise will be received with feelings of sorrow and regret by an unusually large circle of friends, as few men in this district were better or more favourably known than deceased. Mr Young was born at Braehead, near Glasgow, Scotland, on October 9th, 1804, and was consequently in his 82nd year when he died. At the age of ten years he formed the acquaintance of Jeanie Erskine, then living in Glasgow. That acquaintanceship grew, and ripened into marriage on November 14th, 1828, the ceremony being performed by Rev John Bar, of Dovehill. In the spring of 1832 Mr Young came to Canada and settled on his farm in the township of Ramsay, where, with the exception of one year, he lived continuously till death, and brought up his large family of seven sons and four daughters, all of whom, with their mother, survive to mourn his loss, and all the more on account of its being the first break in the family. The family are as follows; Sons ? William, Alex E., Peter, John, Robert, Stephen, and Andrew; daughters ? Mrs John McCarter; Mrs Angus Sutherland, Mrs H. Cavers, and Mrs John McFarlane. At the funeral, which took place on Saturday last, and was very largely attended, notwithstanding the severity of the weather, the seven sons acted as pall-bearers, it having been their wish to lay in their last resting-place the remains of their venerable father ? a sight we never witness before, and are not likely to again. All the members of the family are comfortably situated, all are married and living in homes of their own, either in Almonte or within a very few miles of it, and all can meet together on an hour's notice. Mr and Mrs Young celebrated their golden wedding seven years ago last November, with nearly all their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren around them, which was quite a large company, and very comforting to the old couple. In many respected the late Mr Young was no ordinary man. He had a commanding appearance, stood over six feet high, and in his younger days possessed great physical strength. For many years, however, although always enjoying excellent health, he had been feeble in body; but, though feeble in body, he was not in mind. He had a strong, determined will and a clear, vigorous, inventive intellect. Fertile in resources, and strong in selfreliance, he was ever master of the occasion ? sure, like the old Roman general, to "find a way or make one" to accomplish his purpose. He was an enthusiastic Scotchman, of the most hospitable kind, and always retained a strong love for the land of his nativity. In religious matters he was a consistent Presbyterian, and in politics a sound Reformer, although he never took a very active part in the latter. But he has gone to his rest. he bore his last illness with great patience and resignation, and died with a strong and vivid hope of a blessed future.

    Obit. Mrs Peter Young
One by one the old settlers of Ramsay have been passing away to their long rest, until very few of those who settled her in the early years of this century are left. One of the earliest, Mrs Peter Young, of the 7th line Ramsay, passed away last Monday morning. She was the relict of the late Peter Young, who died in 1886. Both Mr and Mrs Young died in their 82nd year. Mrs Young's maiden name was Jean Erskine. She was born in Glasgow on Jan 14, 1810, and was married to Mr Young in that city. In 1832 the came to Ramsay, and resided in that township continuously to the time of their death. Mr and Mrs Young had seven sons and four daughter, all of whom are living and settled in comfortable homes of their own. The sons are William, Peter, John, Robert and Andrew, living in Almonte; Alexander, in Toronto; and Stephen, on the homestead. The daughters are Mrs John McCarter, Mrs Angus Sutherland, Mrs Henry Cavers and Mrs John McFarlane. Mrs Young enjoyed good health until she fell a few years ago and injured herself. She was able to move about the house until about two weeks ago. Her death was caused by a general break-up of the system through old age. Mrs Young was of a very gentle and kind disposition, and was greatly beloved by all who knew her. Both she and her husband were well-known and respected on account of their genial nature, and many a pleasant evening was spent under their hospitable roof that will long be remembered by their friends and neighbours. The large cortege that followed her remains to the 8th line cemetery on Wednesday showed the high esteem in which the deceased and her family are held in the community. Rev R. Knowles, of Pembroke, was the officiating clergyman, and six sons of the deceased were the pallbearers.
