Mrs Alexander C. Wylie?/b?
The death of Mrs Alexander C. Wylie at the Rosamond
Memorial Hospital here on Sunday, October 21st, 1945
caused widespread regret throughout the town and district.
Mrs Wylie was born in Arnprior and had resided in
Almonte practically all her lifetime, the daughter of the late George Wilson and his wife, the late Mary Patterson. She was educated in the Almonte Public School and High School and was a Registered nurse, a graduate of the Winnipeg General Hospital.
Mrs Wylie was a devout member of Bethany United
Church and took a prominent part in all the activities of the
church, and was deeply interested in the work of the
Women's Association and Women's Missionary Society and also an active worker of the Ladies' War Aid and of the Alexandra Club in connection with the Rosamond Memorial Hospital.
A cheerful disposition and charm of manner and a
sincere concern for the happiness and welfare of others
won for Mrs Wylie a host of friends.
She was married to Alexander C. Wylie in 1899 and is
survived in addition to her husband by four sons, Capt. J. Hamilton Wylie, Arthur W. Wylie, Harry A. Wylie of the
United States Navy and Flt Sgt. R. Maitland Wylie, and one daughter Mrs S.R. Pence (Jean), (another daughter, Mary, predeceased her in 1925), and one brother, John W. Wilson of Victoria, B.C. survives. A brother H.G.W. Wilson, K.C., of Indian Head and a sister, Dorothy, predeceased her.
One son Harry, who is still on duty with the U.S. Navy in
the Pacific theatre of war was unable to be present at the funeral but represented by his son Bob, from Niles,
Michigan

It was with surprise and regret that news of the death of Mr Geo Wilson at Indian Head, Sask, was heard in town on Thursday last, Mr Wilson went west a couple of years ago, and had enjoyed good health when he was taken ill with pneumonia. Paralysis followed and he passed away on Thursday, November 12th. Mr Wilson was born in 1835 on the 12th concession of Lanark township, a son of the late Thos Wilson. When he had grown to young manhood he served an apprenticeship with Mr Thos Leckie, general merchant, at Leckie's Corners. Afterwards he embarked in business on his own account in the old building that now stands at the foot of Mill street. later he disposed of his interest therein and entered into partnership with Mr Robt Brown of Pakenham and they opened up in Arnprior under the name of Brown & Wilson. Some years later Mr Brown retired from the Arnprior branch and Mr Wilson formed a partnership with Mr Jas Hartney and as Wilson & Hartney they carried on business in the building known as the Arcade. In the early eighties Mr Wilson went to Winnipeg, where he carried on business as a retail dry goods merchant for about three years. He then returned to Almonte, where he again entered upon business which he conducted until about 1900 when he retired from active business, and enjoyed a respite from a busy life until he went west about two years ago. On February 28, 1871, he was married to Mary Cecilia Patterson, daughter of the late John Patterson, J.P., who was an old and respected resident of Almonte. To them five children were born, of whom two sons and two daughters survive. These are Mrs A.C. Wylie of Almonte, and Miss Dorothea Wilson and Mr Harry Wilson, barrister, of Indian Head, Sask, and Mr Jack Wilson, of the staff of the Union Bank of Canada at Edmonton, Alta. The remains of the late Mr Wilson were brought to Almonte, accompanied by Mrs Wilson and Mr Harry Wilson, and the funeral took place from the home of Mr A.C. Wylie on Tuesday to the eighth line cemetery, and was a tribute of respect to one who had been a prominent figure in business circles and a citizen who enjoyed the esteem of his fellows. The pallbearers were Messrs A. Scott, D.G. Hamilton, W. Thoburn, M.P., Chas Simpson, Jas Snedden, and Jas McLeod.

George married Mary Cecilia Patterson in 1871. ?b?Mrs Mary Wilson Dies at Age of 89?/b?
Mrs Mary Cecilia Wilson, aged 89, widow of the late George Wilson, formerly of Almonte, died on Wednesday at her residence, 155 McLaren street, Ottawa. Mrs Wilson was born in Almonte, and had lived in Ottawa for the past seven years. She was the eldest daughter of the late Mr and Mrs John Paterson. Shortly after her marriage Mrs Wilson lived in Arnprior and later at Indian Head, Sask, where a large number of friends will deeply mourn her loss. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs Alex C. Wylie, Almonte; Dorothy, Ottawa; two sons, H.G. Wilson, K.C., Indian Head, Sask; John W. Wilson, Prince Albert, Sask. Miss J.J. Paterson, of Ottawa, is a sister and Robert Paterson of Carleton Place, a brother.

The passing years are working great changes in the appearance of our town. The extension on every side, and the alteration or removal of old buildings, is fast banishing the Almonte of twenty years ago. The changes are not confined to the inanimate portion of the town, but extend to the inhabitants, and we are constantly called on to record the removal by death of one and another who had grown up with Almonte and helped to develop her resources. The old familiar faces are passing away, and their number are getting "small by degrees and beautifully less." The last to go over to join the majority is Mr. J. Patterson, J.P., whose name has long been "as familiar in men's mouths as household words," and who died somewhat unexpectedly to most on Friday morning last, after an attack that confined him to the house about four weeks. The deceased was born in Bridgetown, near Glasgow, in 1810 and came to Canada with his mother, three brothers and two sisters in 1827. In 1828 he apprenticed himself to the Bros. Spence in Brockville, to learn the blacksmithing trade. In 1835 he came to Ramsay, and resided with his mother and family for two years, on the 8th line near the Greig's schoolhouse. In 1837 he moved into what was then called Ramsayville, now Almonte, and built the house in which he lived to the time of his death. He pursued his calling for over ten years on the spot now occupied by Mr McCaffrey, corner of Bridge and Water streets, and his careful attention to business is still remembered by many. In 1839 he married Elizabeth Smith, by whom he had issue of four sons and three daughters, of whom one son and one daughter are dead. In 1851, when the gold fever was at its height he got badly infected with it and went to California and spent two years there during which time he gained a considerable competency. Soon after this he returned and was appointed magistrate and for many years had disposed of the great majority of magisterial cases. His decisions, being based on a common sense view of the matter before him generally commanded approval. In 1862 he was appointed Clerk of the Division Court, an office he held to the time of his death. The deceased gentleman belonged to a healthy race, as is proved by his mother dying only a few years ago at the advanced age of 91 years, and his brothers and sisters (one of whom is Mrs. John Scott) are still living. With the exception of one brother who is in California, the other brothers and sisters are living in the Niagara Peninsula and are well known in the neighbourhood. Up to the time of his fatal sickness the deceased had never been sick in his life, and the ailment of which he died, cirrhotic disease of the kidneys was undoubtedly brought on by an exposure to the wet weather. A very large assemblage gathered on Sunday last to follow the remains to the cemetery, and thus marked their respect for one whose face and person had been so familiar on our streets and known to all, as well as to the widow and family he had left behind. Mr Patterson was of a kindly disposition, and is spoken of as a neighbour with great regard. He had the courage of his convictions, and having once formed an opinion was not given to change, whilst not unwilling to listen to argument. His more than average intellect and good memory made him quite an authority as to the past of the town he had watched grow up from a small hamlet to be the "Manchester" of Canada. Mr Patterson was a member of St Andrew's church and in politics was a staunch Reformer. Few men will be more missed than the deceased, and we are confident that he widow and family have the sympathy of the entire community in their sad bereavement.

DEATHS
At Almonte, March 4th, Elizabeth, relict of the late John Patterson, Esq., in the 70th year of her age.

On Friday morning last, Elizabeth Smith, relict of the late John Patterson, Esqu., of this town, passed over to the majority, having just reached the allotted span - three score and ten. She had been ill for a time with an affection of the lungs, and her death was not, on that account, unexpected. The late Mrs. Patterson was born in Johnston, Renfrewshire, Scotland, in the year 1817. She came to Canada in August 1836 and to her late residence in the town immediately after her marriage in January, 1839, from which time to her death she was a continuous resident here. Her quiet and unassuming manner and her Christian integrity was the admiration of all with whom she came in contact. The funeral, which took place on Sunday afternoon was one of the largest ever seen in town and fully evidenced the high esteem in which the deceased was held.

The many friends of Mr Robt Patterson, barrister, of this place, will regret to learn of the death of his mother, which took place at Almonte on Friday. Mrs Patterson was the relict of the late John Patterson, of Almonte, and had attained the allotted age of three score and ten years. Deceased was highly respected by all who knew her, and to the bereaved one we extend our warmest sympathy. The funeral took place on Sunday to the Eighth Line Ramsay cemetery and was largely attended.
