    History of Alexander (Sandy) Smart
Posted 20 Apr 2008 by smart37 (Robbie Smart)

Alexander "Sandy" Smart was born at Brechin, Scotland on October 9th, 1805. He followed his father to Canada in 1824 and worked as a stone mason on the Rideau Canal while it was being built. He married Jane Lang of Almonte, Ramsay Township on March 1st, 1831 by the Rev. Buchanan of Beckwith, Upper Canada.

"Sandy" and his wife settled on two hundred acres of bush land five miles from Portage du Fort, on Lots 20A and 20B. Our lot is 20A (Robbie Smart) and 20 B is Glen Yach's. Lot 20B was given to the daughter of his second marriage, Jane Gold Smart and she married W. C. Stark. They lived there until about 1919 and then sold it to Lloyd Hodgins. He sold it to Clarence Little and he sold it to Glen Yach. Alexander "Sandy" Smart divided the farms with his sons and two of his daughters.

Lots 19A and 19B went to Thomas Smart ?tab??tab?200 acres

Lot 20A went to Robert Smart?tab??tab??tab??tab??tab?100 acres

Lot 20B went to Mrs. W. C. Stark (second family)?tab?100 acres

Lot 21A went to Bemsley Smart ?tab??tab??tab??tab?100 acres

Lot 21B went to William Smart ?tab??tab??tab??tab??tab?100 acres

Lot 22A went to William Horsfield (stepson)?tab??tab?100 acres

Lot 22B went to John Smart?tab??tab??tab??tab??tab?100 acres

Lot 23B went to Janet Smart (Mrs. Edward Smiley) and she gave it to her daughter Jane Smiley who married Thomas Morrison. These farms are all on the 4th range of Clarendon.

Lot 23 - 3rd range went to Arthur Smart?tab??tab??tab?165 acres

Alexander "Sandy" and Jane Lang settled on Lot 20A on March 17th, 1835 and lived in a shanty for a short time. Then he built the main part of the house which his son Robert inherited, then his son, Fred Smart, followed by his son, Robbie Smart. The large kitchen was built later. He now had Lots 20A and 20B. Then, as years went on, he got more land.

When Alexander "Sandy" Smart married the second time on June 11, 1874 to Jane Gray, widow of Oliver Horsfield, he moved to Lot 20B. Mrs. Horsfield had three children, William, Hanna, and Sarah. He was 69 and she was 43. She would not marry Sandy unless he would give her a farm for her son, William C. Horsfield. He gave her Lot 22A which became the Lennis Barr farm. Their only child to this marriage was Jane Louisa Gold Smart, born June 6, 1875.

    Notes:

Thomas Smart was a farmer living on a farm near Brechin in Forfarshire, Scotland. The name of his farm was "Hunt Hill". Thomas Smart raised a family of five, Alexander "Sandy", John, William, and two daughters. I do not know the name of his wife. Thomas Smart unwisely endorsed papers for his friends in Scotland which resulted in his financial ruin. His wife died and he emigrated to Canada to the township of Ramsay one mile south of the town of Almonte on the Mississippi River. In 1821 he married Lois Buell. There were one girl and three boys born to this second marriage. One son was Bemesley Buell Smart. Thomas Smart and his wife, Lois Buell are both buried in the Canada Pioneer Methodist Cemetry near Almonte. It is nearly the next lot to Thomas Smart's homestead.
