    Samuel George Lowry
Ramsay Township lost one of its eldest residents on Jan 1, 1992 with the passing of S. George Lowry at Almonte General Hospital. Mr Lowry was the son of the late Samuel Lowry and the late Rebecca Gordon. He was born July 29, 1902, the youngest of a family of four. In 1917 he moved with his family to Rosedale Farm where he farmed until recent years when failing health wouldn't allow him to be actively involved, yet he always maintained an interest in its operation. In June 1939,he married the former Gertrude Gilmour who predeceased him in 1983. Their surviving family are Edwin (Marian) of Almonte, Shirley Eastman of Missassauga, Marilyn (Mrs Brian Kealey) and Lois (Mrs Dave Drummond), both of Almonte, and Irene (Mrs Merv Hilliard) of Carleton Place. He was predeceased by his brothers Gordon and Hollie and his sister Mrs Agnes Preston. Throughout his lifetime he was involved with his church and many organizations in the community. In 1932 he was appointed elder in St John's Presbyterian Church in Almonte, a position he held until his death. He was one of the founders of the Almonte Concentrated Milk Producers Board which he represented on the Ontario Concentrated Milk Producers Board in Toronto. He served as president on both of these boards. He also worked on the local school board as well as doing auditing for the North Lanark Agriculture Society for many years. Some of his pastimes were caring for his roses, taking long walks through his farm, photography and writing the column "Wit and Wisdom" for the Almonte Gazette, bringing laughter to readers for more than eight years. He will be remembered for his kind, quiet and caring nature. Mr Lowry rested at the C.R. Gamble Funeral Home and thence to St John's Presbyterian Church for funeral service conducted by Rev Grant Wilson. Active pallbearers were his four grandsons Steven Lowry, Douglas Lowry, Kenneth Eastman and Mark Hilliard and nephews Bert and Bill Lowry. Honourary pallbearers were William Stewart, Bob Hawkins, Stewart Drummond, Dennis Sirman, Boyd Jamieson and Harvey Reid. Spring interment will be at the Auld Kirk Cemetery
