    ROBERT MCKIBBON

"One by one our old land marks drop away and pass to their long home. For fully half a century Mr. Robert McKibbon conducted a boot and shoe business in town and was known far and wide for the honesty and reliability of his products and the rectitude of his life. He was one of the old time practical craftsmen who knew his trade from the ground up and in the construction of his work much of his own nature and character entered. Of a quaint, self-contained nature and a peculiarly direct way of estimating persons, things and events, many people enjoyed nothing better than a chat with this philosopher of the hammer and awl. For the past few years he had made his home with his daughter, Mrs. W. Fitzsimmons, Ottawa, at whose place he died Friday at the age of 87 years. Funeral services were conducted in Ottawa by the Rv. Dr. McVeity and the remains brought here on the 2:30 train accompanied by his daughters Mrs. Fitzsimmons and Mrs. T. Dempsey. Many old time friends met the train to pay their last respects to the one who through long years had lived a just and upright life and ha an unblemished character. The Rev. R. Stillwell conducted the services at the grave internment taking place by the side of his wife in the Union Cemetery. Four of his family survives. Robert of Cobden, Ambrose of Merrickville, Mrs. W. Fitzsimmons and Mrs. Thomas Dempsey, Ottawa"

Note: Son William Humphrey was mentioned in the obituary of his brother Ambrose in 1929. He was still alive at the time of his father Robert's death though not mentioned in the obituary above.

Robert was the son of James McKibbon (b. ????) and Margaret Stewart (b. 1797). Both James McKibbon and his wife Margaret Stewart were born in Ireland. They came to Canada sometime in the 1820s. James McKibbon died before the first census was taken in Canada in 1851. The widow Margaret McKibbon was living in Lochiel Township, Glengarry County, Ontario in 1851. With her were a James McKibbon (b. 1824), Hugh McKibbon (b. 1828 later married Jane Roche of Merrickville), Esther McKibbon (b. 1831) and Anna Crookshanks (b. 1845). By 1861 the widow Margaret McKibbon had moved away from Glengarry county and resided near Merrickville in the years 1861 and 1871 (source: 1851, 1861. 1871 Census of Canada).

Robert's McKibbon's first wife was named Eliza and she was the mother of two children. Her son was Robert James McKibbon (Cobden, ON) and her daughter was Eliza McKibbon (later Mrs. Thomas Dempsey of Ramsayville, ON). According to the death registration of daughter Eliza Dempsey, her mother's maiden name was Eliza Burrows as reported by her son Roy Dempsey.

Robert's second wife was Maria Perrin daughter of Humphrey Perrin and Elizabeth Saunders. Maria was the mother of children Elizabeth McKibbon (Mrs. William Fitzsimmons of Ottawa, William Humphrey McKibbon (William H. McKibbon of Seattle, Washington, wife Hattie Lowe), Ambrose McKibbon of Merrickville (wife Harriet Edwards), Ellen Theresa McKibbon (Mrs. Albert E. Gorman) and Margaret Ann McKibbon (Mrs. Frederick R. McCrea).

Based on birth, marriage, death and census information Robert McKibbon is thought to have had a brother named Hugh McKibbon (sources: Marriage, Birth of James McGibbon***surname used was McGibbon) and a possibly a brother named James McKibbon born around 1824 (source: Year: 1851; Census Place: Lochiel, Glengarry County, Canada West (Ontario); Schedule: A; Roll: C_11722; Page: 119; Line: 9). An Esther McKibbon also lived with the family and she was of an age to be a possible sister. Esther McKibbon was living with the widow Margaret McKibbon in Merrickville in 1871 and also earlier in 1851 in Glengarry County.

An 1822 birth registration for a woman named Elizabeth McGibbin lists the similar named parents of James McGibbin and Margaret Steward. (source: FamilySearch.org) Therefore she is another possible sister. She was widowed by a man with the surname Black and she later married second husband John McLellan of Perth, Ontario. She had a daughter Mary Black from her first marriage.

Robert's mother the widow Margaret McKibbon was sometimes recorded as Margaret McGibbon and is listed as a landowner in Wolford Township in the 1861 Atlas of Grenville County as Mrs. McCribbon.

    NOTES:
Proof that son Humphrey McKibbon is the same man as William H. McKibbon who died in Seattle, WA in 1935. 1. Marriage register of a marriage between William H. McKibbon and Hattie Lowe that occurred in Douglas County, Wisconsin, June 8, 1898 states that he was born in Canada. It lists his full name as William Humphrey McKibbon and it lists his father as Robert, and his mother as Marie. 2. Various census information linking William H. McKibbon of Seattle and wife Hattie to their son Edward Truman McKibbon. 3. Edward Truman McKibbon's death in Seattle 1960 named his mother's maiden name as Hattie Lowe. Note: Hattie and William H. McKibbon of Seattle also had a daughter named Edna McKibbon of Seattle. Her married name was Bovaire, and she had a daughter Billy Dee Bovaire (source: 1960 obituary of Mrs. Hattie McKibbon, Seattle Times). According to other articles in the Seattle times, Edna McKibbon appears to have been a champion swimmer who attended the Olympics in 1932.

Robert married Maria Perrin on 16 Feb 1858. Maria (daughter of Humphrey Perrin and Elizabeth Saunders) was born in 1830 in Montague Township, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; died on 10 Mar 1915 in Ottawa, Carleton County, Ontario, Canada; was buried in Union Cemetery, Merrickville, Leeds and Grenville United Counties, Ontario, Canada. Died:
Maria Perrin was the daughter of Humphrey Perrin and Elizabeth Saunders.

Although her birthyear was inscribed as 1828 on her headstone, her true birth year by all accounts (census data compared to age of husband Robert, age at marriage, age at death) was 1830 or 1831.

She married Robert McKibbon, a boot and shoemaker on February 16, 1858. At the time Robert was a widower so Maria became mother to Robert's children Robert James and Eliza.

Maria had five children of her own. Daughter Elizabeth McKibbon married William Fitzsimmons. Son William Humphrey McKibbon moved away and died in Seattle, Washington in 1935 (wife Hattie Lowe). Son Albert Ambrose McKibbon stayed in Merrickville. Daughter Ellen Theresa McKibbon married Albert Gorman. Daughter Margaret Ann McKibbon married Frederick S. McCrea.

The Perrin family came from Ireland and settled in Beckwith Township and later moved to Montague. Maria's parents are buried in Smiths Falls at Hillcrest Cemetery.

Sometime after the 1911 census Robert and Maria left Merrickville to live with their daughter Elizabeth Fitzsimmons in Ottawa.

Upon her death in Ottawa on March 1915, her daughter Elizabeth made the report. Their address was given as 263 Besserer Street, Ottawa. Maria's age was stated to be 84 years. She was brought back for burial in Merrickville.

Maria was predeceased by her daughters Margaret Ann McCrea (d. 1901) and Ellen Theresa Gorman (d. 1912).

She was survived by her son William Humphrey McKibbon (Seattle), son Ambrose McKibbon (Merrickville, ON) and daughter Elizabeth Fitzsimmons (Ottawa, ON). She was also survived by by her step children Robert James McKibbon (Cobden, ON) and Eliza Dempsey (Ramsayville, ON).

Maria was also survived by her husband Robert McKibbon who died later that year on November 5, 1915.
