Rev J. Fergusson Miller of Blakeney conducted a short service at the house. Among the friends who were present at the funeral was Mrs James Black, mother of deceased, who, though well advanced in the eighties was able to attend. 1885, Friday April 3, The Almonte Gazette, page 5
Sudden Death -- One of those events which sadden a whole neighbourhood occurred on Saturday morning last, on the seventh line of Ramsay, at the residence of Mr Walter Black, by which he lost a faithful and devoted wife, and five children, a patient and loving mother. Mrs Black has not been strong for some time, as the result of a cold which has apparently settled on her lungs, and was to all appearances gradually bringing her down to the grave. On Saturday morning last the deceased rose and dressed herself, to all appearances no worse than usual, but a feeling of suffocation led her to lie down on the bed, and in a few moments she had passed away. The deceased was well known and respected She was the third daughter of Mr James Wallace, of this town. The funeral took place on Tuesday, and was one of the largest ever seen in Ramsay, proving the general sympathy with the bereaved husband, as well as the respect for the family. Rev Messrs Bennet and McRitchie officiated.

    Mr James Black
Although the news of the accident from which Mr James Black suffered a couple of weeks ago had become pretty well known, and it was generally thought that owing to his great age the result would likely prove fatal, yet the announcement of his death came as a shock to his many friends and was received with feelings of sadness and a sense of loss. On Wednesday of last week Mr Black arose from his bed and went out and took a look around the house as though he felt it would be for the last time. On Friday afternoon he became unconscious, in which condition he remained until he quietly and calmly breathed his last shortly after three o'clock on Sunday morning. The late Mr Black was born in Glasgow in 1817, and when four years of age his father came to Canada and settled in the township of Ramsay on lot 21 on the 7th concession, on which farm he continued to reside until his death. After the death of his father James took his place, and remained on the same farm until about two years ago, when he went to live with his son Robert on the farm owned by the late Daniel Galbraith on the 5th line of Ramsay. Among those who came to Canada at the same time as Mr Black were Mr and Mrs James Johnston, and to them a daughter was born when on the way up the St Lawrence, who afterward became the wife of Mr James Black. To them were born eleven children, five of whom are still living. They are: Walter (7th line Ramsay), Margaret (Mrs A.W. Gilmour), Braeside), Wm H. (Almonte), Agnes (Mrs A.A. Steele), Ramsay), and Robert J. (with whom the father and mother have been living). Those dead are James, Ellen Gunnan, Charles H., Gilbert J., Jessie and Nellie. Mr Black was always an enterprising and progressive man, and took a keen interest in matters pertaining to the welfare of the township in which he lived. For eleven years he sat at the council ? ten years of that time as deputy-reeve ? and by his intelligence and good judgement aided materially in transacting the business of the township. He also took a lively interest in the North Lanark Agricultural Society, and was for many years an active member of the board of directors. In politics he was a Liberal, who always stood for what he conscientiously believed to be best. He was for many years a member of St Andrew's (Presbyterian) church, Almonte, and until increasing years and failing strength prevented was a regular attendant at the ordinances of that church. Mrs Black, who is in her 79th year, together with other relatives and friends (among whom is William, a brother of the late Mr Black, who is over 80 years of age), have the sincere sympathy of the entire community in their bereavement. The funeral, which took place on Tuesday afternoon to the eighth line cemetery, was very largely attended, notwithstanding that many mutual friends were in attendance at the funeral of the late John McArton, which took place at the same time.

James married Janet Johnston on 25 Mar 1841 in Ramsay Township, Lanark County, Canada West. Janet (daughter of James Johnson and Margaret Steele) was born in 1821 in Cornwall, Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry United Counties, Ontario, Canada; died on 11 Mar 1916 in Almonte, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; was buried in 1916 in Auld Kirk Cemetery, Ramsay, Mississippi Mills, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada. Story in the Almonte Gazette, 1897, speaking of the Durham boats which brought the settlers up the St Lawrence. "As these uncouth craft are crawling cannily by the swirling waters of the Long Sault Rapids, there is observed an unusual commotion among the passengers. There is a hurried landing from one of the boats, and, by-and-by, the wail of a new born infant. Thus is born to Mr and Mrs Johnston a daughter - Janet, now Mrs James Black. The Durham boats landed the party at Prescott, whence it proceeded by wagon to Perth and on to Lanark Village. here scows were built to carry the settlers and their effects down the Clyde and the Mississippi to Ramsay.

In that sketch, descriptive of the experiences of a party of settlers who had left Scotland to make their homes in Canada, and who were coming up the St. Lawrence in Durham boats, the following sentence appeared: "There is a hurried landing from one of the boats, and by-and-bye, the wail of a new-born infant. Thus is born to Mr and Mrs James Johnston, a daughter ? Janet, now Mrs James Black." A few years later then the sketch Mr Black was called away, and now Mrs Black has reached the home for which she so long and earnestly looked. The year of her birth was 1821, and in her death at 94 years of age, one of the oldest residents of Ramsay township has passed to the great beyond. She was a daughter of the late Jas, Johnston, R.N., a veteran of the wars with Napoleon. She was married to Mr Back in 1844, and to them eleven were born, four of whom survive. These are Mrs C.W. Gilmour (Margaret), Braeside; Mrs A.A. Steele (Agnes), Steelton, Sask.; Robt, fifth line Ramsay, William H., at Morrisburg. For about six years the late Mrs Black was a patient in the Rosamond Memorial Hospital, helpless from a broken limb, but possessing all her mental faculties to the end. She was a woman of exalted Christian character and remarkably patient and cheerful disposition. The funeral took place on Monday afternoon from the Presbyterian manse to the eighth line cemetery vault, and was attended by many from Ramsay and Almonte

    ?u?Coxford - Norfolk County, England?/u?

George and Mary Browne, friends (of Sylvianne Penner) from York, Yorkshire, England ran across a Coxford sign while visiting friends and kindly sent these pictures and ordnance survey map and did some research on the history of Coxford.

The nearest town of any size is Fakenham (52 degrees 50'n, 0' 51'E) about eight (8) miles from Coxford. There is a Coxford heath (see map) that is wet and partly wooded, unusual for the area. There was a Coxford Priory in the Middle Ages and the nearby village of Rudham benefited from the Market and Fair granted to the Priory. A lot of the stone from the ruins of the Priory were used in the foundation of a house called Raynham, built in the 1620's for Sir Roger Townsend. To quote from a Reference Library book: "The Plundering of Coxford for building stone created one of the most attractive monastic sites in Norfolk. There is much less masonry work than at most other abbeys, but its atmosphere of space and isolation is unique. Founded about 1140, dissolved in 1536 to become the property of the Duke of Norfolk and eventually passed on to the Townsends in 1597".

The ordnance map was obtained from the farmer who now owns this property. Very little of the Abby ruins remain. Cosford, according to the farmer consists of his farm and farmhouse, plus three other cottages. As George states, that's Coxford. not much nightlife I'm afraid.

Note: on the map of England, the names of to towns, Blakeney and Pakenham that are in close proximity to Coxford and undoubtedly, these names were transplanted to Canada to locales where the Coxfords settled.

    ?u?History of the Coxford Name
    ?/u?
These notes are according to Fred Sadler, a historian of Norfolk, England and rewritten by Sylvianne Penner of Calgary, AB

    1066: Norman Invasion

1085: Stonework on St. Mary's (see photos) at East Rudham began.

1135-1154: Coxford Priory founded (Old Ruins) by William Cheney (a Norman) during Stephen's
Reign (originally at East Rudham). It was a Augustine Priory and was relocated in 1216.

1140: Normans came to this area, prior to this time the Saxon's constructed the Churches using flint a wedging between the stones. The Normans who brought their own stone masons used a cement mortar between stones so that many of these structures are still standing and in use.

    ?u?"Cokesford"

?/u?This is a Norman name which is possibly the origin of the name Coxford.
    Cokes were Norman Landowners.
Ford meaning where there is no bridge, a shallow spot in the river.
Coxford (Cokesford) meaning landowners at the ford in the river. They were a higher class of society, not in the working class and may have come from Brittany.
Cokesford may have been spelled Cotesford. at one time.

1216: The Monks moved their headquarters from St. Mary's to Coxford Priory (Coxford Abby ruins) at the beginning of Henry III's Reign.

1301: Vicar of Rudham was John de Titeshale, Prior and Convent of Cokesford.

1305: Vicar of West Rudham was William Rademelde, Prior and Covent of Cokesford.
1534 John de Coxford, alias Mathew, was the last Prior.

    1537 The Abby was dissolved
The Earl of Lester (who was a Coke, landowner) started the farm course rotary system of farming, soon after.

1623: Henry VIII ordered the absolution of Catholic Monasteries. Three churches, the Coxford Abby and two others were ordered destroyed. About the same time Black Death wiped out the Village of Sengham, which surrounded Coxford Abby. Sengham means home of Seng (Saxon). About 800-1000 survivors of the Black Death left Sengham and established Gates End about one mile away.
Gates End or perhaps Gates Hill is what is know at Tattersett today.
The Black Day is reported to have been brought to the area by a Tax Collector from London.

1719: A small pot of Roman coins was found in the Coxford Abby ruins in an underground passage, indicating that Romans were in this area at one time.

    John Coxford: Occupation: stone mason
John died in a rock slide while working on the Rideau Canal. John may have also used the name James. The name John Coxford appears on his son (James) marriage certificate. I have not been able to determine which ship and exactly when the Coxfords came to Canada, but it is know that Mary was born after they arrived, so must of been in 1837-1838. John worked as a stone mason on the Rideau Canal and according to oral stories he was killed in a Rock Fall in the 1840's. There were two rock falls, the question is which one?

(Medical):There may be some historical confussion in that the construction of the Rideau Canal was between 1826-1832, although there was probably construction for years afterward, such as Lockmaster houses . As the workforce became available after completion of the Canal the stone houses of the area were built from 1834 on. It would seem more likely that John Coxford was killed in a quarry site or construction site post Rideau Canal construction.

    Occupation: housewife
On the marriage Certificate of her son James, Esthers name is Esther Hall Coxford. Hence the confusion as to which is the correct spelling of her last name. I have not been able to find her final resting place. We know that she resided somewhere near Ottawa. She may have lived in Nepean, as it is next to Ottawa were Halls and Hulls resided at this time.
