    Died:
A Veteran Gone - On Tuesday morning last, at the Davis House, Mr James Coulter, sen., died very peaceably after an illness of two weeks, that compelled constant attention night and day. The deceased was born in Ireland, county Sligo, on the 17th March, 1800, just at the commencement of the present century, and he lived to see by far the greater part of it pass away. In 1821 he came to Canada and settled in Clayton, township of Ramsay, where for a long number of years he kept a hotel. He married Elizabeth Waugh, aunt of Mr. A. Waugh, of this town. Mrs Coulter died several years ago. The deceased was prostrated fourteen years ago by a paralytic stroke, but continued in Clayton until about six years ago, when he moved to Almonte, living first with his son, the late Mr. Thomas Coulter, but lately with his daughter, Mrs. J. Gemmill. His family consisted of eight childresn, of whom four are still living, viz.: Mr. Jas. Coulter, Almonte: Mr. John Y. Coulter, Ottawa: Mrs. J. Gemmill, Almonte: and Mrs O. Banning, Clayton. From having lived in the one neighborhood for nearly sixty years, the deceased was well known by a very large circle, and was very well respected. It was interesting to hear him speak of the changes he had witnessed during his many years acquaintance with the neighborhood. The late Mr. Coulter was connected with the English Church, and in political matters he cared more for the man than the party. the funeral took place on thursday morning, from the Davis House, and was largely attended, the remains being taken to Clayton, to be the family burying place.

James married Elizabeth Waugh about 1825. Elizabeth was born in 1805 in Drummond Township, Lanark County, Canada West; died on 27 Feb 1878 in Almonte, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; was buried on 1 Mar 1878. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
