Norman Paul Will Be Well-Remembered in Ramsay
A little bit of Ramsay Township's history died last Wednesday.
Norman Earl Paul passed away Jan 3 at the Almonte General Hospital. He had just turned 90 years of age New Year's Day. Mr Paul was quoted in Steve Evans' book Up the Line, a profile of Ottawa Valley residents, as saying he was born in the Rea Sideroad house where he's lived his whole life, and "I hope to die here." M Paul's son, Jim, said his father was "good right up to the end," having only been ill about a day-and-a-half. He said his father, a dairy farmer, was one of the pioneers of purebred Holstein farming in the area, and was the director of the national Holstein association for 10 years. He was a member of the Lanark County Holstein Association for over 40 years. He was presented with a Celebration '88 certificate by Lanark-Carleton MP Paul Dick as part of the 1988 Olympics for his strong community involvement in Ramsay Township. Mr Paul's main interest in the past years was the North Lanark Regional Museum in Appleton where many of his wood carvings are displayed. He was on hand most Sundays to talk to visitors and relay Ramsay Township's rich history. Dawn Leduc spent many of those Sundays afternoons with Mr Paul.'"I guess Norman had a pretty clear memory about every thing about him since he was three years old,' she said. "He was a pretty marvellous man, He was interested in people, and people were interested by him." She added he was very knowledgeable about the Almonte- Carleton Place area. Norman Paul was born to William Paul and Isobel Yuill and attended S.S. #5 school in Ramsay. In 1925 he married the late Caroline Mary Bowland. Together they raised four children, Ruth (Mrs Art Armstrong) of Burks Falls, Ont, James of Almonte, Norma of Akron, Ohio and the late Frank Paul of Almonte. He was predeceased by his brother Jack and his two sisters, Elva and Elsie (Mrs Frank Pollock). Mr Paul had nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. The Paul family had a private ceremony Saturday at Mount Blow Farm with Rev Ted Colwell officiating. Interment will be at the Auld Kirk Cemetery in the spring.
