Abraham Code-He was an Ontario businessman and political figure. He represented Lanark South in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1869 to 1879. He was born in Lanark Township in 1828 and educated there. He served as reeve for Drummond Township from 1860 to 1875. Code built a large woollen mill at Carleton Place in 1871; he was forced to close it due to financial difficulties in 1878. He was elected to the provincial legislature in an 1869 by-election held after the death of William McNairn Shaw. Code joined the federal Ministry of Internal Revenue as an Inspector of Weights and Measures in 1880. He died in Ottawa in 1898. He is buried in Beechwood Cemetery.

Abraham married Eliizabeth Hopkins in 1858. Eliizabeth was born in Ireland; died on 7 May 1875; was buried after 1898 in Ottawa, Ottawa Municipality, Ontario, Canada. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Born in Ireland, Elizabeth immigrated to Canada with her parents, William and Anne Rose (Wilkinson) Hopkins. She married Abraham Code in 1858. They had nine children together and, tragically, Elizabeth died at 39 from heart failure shortly before her last child's first birth. She was originally buried in Innisville, Lanark Co, Ontario.

Following her husband's death and burial in Ottawa, her son Thonas James, supervised the transfer of her remains to Beechwood Cemetery.

(Research):ohn Code's 1787 oldest son, John, was born in Quebec according to 1891 census - he was 73 yrs old (1891-73 = 1818) at the time. This census also shows Ann and Ellen. All 3 were siblings of Thomas. Ann who was 74 in the census was born in Ireland. This would mean that John 1787 immigrated in 1817 which confirms Bailey's speculation.|

Further, Jane Moody's family information is that he wa a carriagemaker by trade and worked in Dublin before emigrating, which is where he met his wife Mary Ann, born in Meath. After emigrating, he worked in Montreal for a couple of years before moving to Lanark Co.. His sons set up a woollen mill in Innisville and Abraham owned a large mill in Carleton Place for about 10 years while he was MP for Lanark County.
