    John W. Neilson
Mrs John Stewart, of Appleton writes as follows to the Gazette:
It seldom falls the lot of your correspondent to chronicle a death which had caused such widespread sorrow and sympathy as that of Mr John W. Neilson, who passed to the "Great Beyond," on Sunday morning at his home in Almonte. Mr Neilson was in his 68th year. He was born, and raised on the farm now occupied by his third son, John B. Neilson. About nineteen years ago he bought from his youngest brother, James, the Elm Dale Farm, now occupied by his second son, William H. Neilson. On that farm he made a real home, until four years ago, when Mrs Neilson failing health caused them to abandon the strenuous life of the farm, and move into Almonte. Since that time his own health had been giving anxiety to his friends. A stroke of paralysis last Monday evening of last week, brought his useful life to a close. He leaves to mourn his passing, besides his wife, five sons, George, William H. and John B. of Ramsay, Gordon of Winnipeg and MacFarlane of Chatham. Two daughters, Laura and Elsie predeceased him. He is also survived by his youngest brother, James, of Toronto, and two sisters, Annie, Mrs Alec Turner, of Ramsay, and Maggie, Mrs Robert Karr of Vancouver. A younger sister, Jean, Mrs Wood, died in Haileybury, some years ago. Mr Neilson was a Presbyterian in religion and a Liberal in politics. He was a prince of good neighbours, absolutely honourable and upright in all his dealings, genial, friendly and hospitable, doing a good deed whenever, and wherever possible. We mourn the passing of a type of man not often met with in this age. The sympathy of this community goes out to Mrs Neilson and family in their great bereavement. Another correspondent of the Gazette writes: "It was very sad to lose John W. Neilson. He was a rare type of man. He had simple, unassuming ways, and neither affectation nor ostentation had any place in his life. He was all genuine. Friendliness and consideration for others were conspicuous traits of his nature. The art of being kind ? the most needed art in all the world ? was the one in which he was most proficient, and many there are who bear witness to his gracious deed of kindness and to his warm sympathy in time of trouble. "When he retired from farming he still kept in close touch with his boys who remained on the farms, and at the same time his two sons who were absent from the home circle were not forgotten, for they found in his numerous letters a faithful chronicle of the doings of the folk at home. He missed sadly his daughter Laura who died in 1902 when she was only 18 years of age. Another daughter died in infancy." The funeral was held from his late residence on Church street, and the large attendance indicated the esteem in which the deceased was held in the community. The floral tributes were numerous and very beautiful. The service was conducted by Rev Edwin Preston of the Presbyterian church. Interment was made at the Aud Kirk Cemetery. The pallbearers were Messrs Robt Woods, George Neilson, John Simpson, William Simpson, Herb Simpson and John Metcalfe. Friends from a distance included Mr and Mrs Wm Scott and Miss Florence Scott, Sault Ste Marie; Mrs Robt Woods, New Liskeard; Mr Geo Neilson, Toronto; Mr and Mrs J. Forgie and Miss Sarah Neilson, Renfrew; also friends from Arnprior, Ottawa and Carleton Place etc.

John married Agnes Simpson on 15 Mar 1883 in Pakenham Township, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada. Agnes (daughter of William Simpson and Ann Gemmill "Annie" Forgie) was born on 9 Jan 1858 in Ramsay Township, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; died on 11 Mar 1931 in Almonte, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; was buried on 14 Mar 1931 in Auld Kirk Cemetery, Ramsay, Mississippi Mills, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada. Notes:

    Died:
Last Monday Mr Matthew M. Neilson, youngest son of one of the oldest and most respected families in Ramsay, died at his home on the 11th line, at the age of 65. His father, the late Mr John Neilson, was one of the pioneer settlers of Ramsay, coming from Paisley, Scotland. His father ntook up land on the 12th line, and there the late Mr M. Neilson was born and lived until 1881, when he moved to the farm on the 11th line and lived on it till he died. About the year 1872 Mr Neilson purchased a farm from the late Mr Jas Gemmill, having altogether 350 acres. His death is the sixth in a family of four sons and four daughters, the surviving members being Mrs Gavin Hamilton and Mrs William Smith. The late Messrs John and James Neilson were his brothers. His third brother died many years ago in Bellville, where he was a prominent contractor. In the year 1858 he married Emeline Teskey, daughter of the late Mr John Teskey, of Appleton. Mrs Neilson and their three sons and four daughters are all living. The children are John, on the old homestead; George, of the Gemmill farm; Mrs Alexander turner (Annie); Mrs John Thom (Aggie); and Emeline, James and Jennie, on the homeshead. The late Mr Neilson was a man of unblemished character and in his comparatively early death the community has lost one of its best citizens. he was of a very quiet and unassuming disposition, but was more than ordinary intelligent, and took a lively interest in public affairs. For many years he filled the position of school trustee for the Appleton section, and was a member of the Ramsay board of health at the time of his death. The deceased had been ailing for three or four years with a kidney trouble. He was a kind-hearted man, who laboured hard for his children and had the satisfaction of seeing them all well provided for before he died. although death came to Mr Neilson at a comparatively early age, it found him well prepared to face the grim monster, and before dying he called his family to his bedside and expressed the hope to meet them all in the better land. His last words were "remember me." In politics the late Mr Neilson was a pronounced Liberal, and was well posted on the affairs of the country. In religion he was a devout member of the Presbyterian congregation at Appleton, in which he held office for a time as manager. The funeral, which took place on Wednesday afternoon, to the eighth line cemetery, was very largely attended. The services were conducted by Rev G. T. Bayne, of Ashton and Appleton, and the pall-bearers were Messrs D. Dowling, Thos Cavers, Robt Cavers, J. A. Teskey, William Paul, Jas Turner. The sorrowing ones have the sympathy of a large circle of friends.

    Mrs Wm Simpson
Death claimed another old resident of Ramsay on Monday last in the person of Mrs Wm Simpson, whose home for quite a few years has been on the ninth line, near Almonte. Deceased had not enjoyed robust health for some time, and when she was seized with pneumonia just a week before her death she lacked the necessary vitality to combat the disease. Deceased was a daughter of the late Graham Forgie, and was born in Lanark township a few miles from Lanark village, one of a family of twelve, six of whom are still living. These are Messrs Gilbert and James of Almonte, Mrs John Simpson in Winnipeg, David in Cleveland, Robert in Ottawa and Henry in Toronto. Those who are dead are John, William, Mrs Campbell, Thomas and Andrew, and now the subject of this notice. Deceased was married to Mr Wm Simpson over fifty-five years, and to them twelve children were born, two of whom died in infancy. Those living are Chas, at White Lake; Mrs Alex Scott and Mrs W.J. Scott, at Sault Ste Marie; Mrs Dodds in the west; Mrs John Metcalf, William and John in Ramsay; and Misses Martha, Belle and Herb at home. The funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon to the eighth line cemetery and was attended by a large number of friends and neighbours. The deceased was a woman of a quiet disposition, but possessed of kindly heart which made her a welcome sympathetic visitor where trouble was until failing health prevented such ministrations. She was a member of St John's church, but has been unable to attend the services for some time, but enjoyed such ministrations as her pastor could impart. Her life was one of simplicity, and was lived in a clear hope of the home beyond.
