CLARESHOLM'S FIRST MARRIED WOMAN RESIDENT, Mrs Wm MOFFAT DEAD
The hand of Father Time waved "finis" on thelife of Mrs William Moffatt shortly after the noon hour on Wednesday. She had been a resident of Claresholm for nearly 30 years, coming here in 1902, and was the first married woman to settle in the town of Claresholm.

The late Mrs Moffatt was born at Carlton Place, May 2 1856 and her maiden name was Flora McLean. At the age of eighteen years she and her husband, the late William Moffat, were married and to them were born seven children, four daughters and three sons. All but one daughter, Mrs L.A. Whitten of Winnipeg, survive. The children living are:
    Mrs W.R. Thompson of Calgary
    Mrs H.B. Tilden of Claresholm
    Mrs Alfred Dickson of Calgary
    J.E. Moffat
    R.E. Moffat
W.G. Moffat all of Claresholm, AB

In the year 1887 Mr & Mrs Moffat and their family of small children joined the western migration that followed the close of the North West Rebellion and settled at Pilot Mound, Manitoba, where they remained till moving to Claresholm in 1902. When they came here there was no town and Mr Moffatt opened up a lumber yard to supply the building requirements of the new settlers then coming in from all parts of the country. At the beginning mail was taken out to the Leeds ranch, but soon Mr Moffattt received the appointment of first postmaster in Claresholm.

The United Church was crowded to accommodate the many friends who attended the funeral Friday afternoon. The casket and the alter were literally banked with wreaths and sprays of beautiful flowers, the tributes of a wide circle of admiring and sympathetic friends.
Rev R.W. Dalgleish was assisted in the services by Rev H.A. Rowe of Granum and Rev J.W, Kidd of Okotoks, a former pastor of the Presbyterian church here before the days of the union and a native of both Mr & Mrs Moffat's home town in Ontario, Carlton Place. He spoke of his long association with the family and offered tribute to the worthy life of the departed. Mr Dalgliesh likened the mature life of the deceased to a spiral in time that takes us back to the childhood beginnings, but with a compensation childhood fails to recognize or appreciate.

The full choir was in attendance, with Mrs A Laurie at the organ, and the hymns were favorites of Mrs Moffatt.

Mr & Mrs Moffatt of Champion, G Moir of Barons, Mrs Thompson of Calgary, Mrs Percy Russell of Armada and Mr & Mrs Hay of Calgary, were among those here for the funeral services.

The pallbearers were all early settlers here, Wm Knight, H.O. Haslam, K.C.; Geo Simpso; W.C. Miller; T.A. Murray; and C.E. Tillotson. Geo W Ringrose had charge of the funeral arrangements and interment was made in the Claresholm cemetery.

Mrs Moffatt had been in frail health for several years, particularly since the death of her husband a little over five years ago.

She has two surviving sisters, Mrs McLaren at Carlton Place, Ontario and Mrs J.W, Buchanan at Pilot Mound Manitoba
