    James Turner
Mr James Turner of Appleton, answered the inevitable call on Tuesday evening of this week. For 78 years James Turner had lived on the same land and was known by the same people. In 78 years of intercourse men come to understand each other very well. When after 78 years Mr Turner was called away, the people who knew him best mourned him most. Mr Turner was born on the homestead two years after his parents had migrated from Scotland to Ramsay. Last February. Mr Turner's wife and helpmeet through the many hardships of early times was called to rest. Of the family of eleven children two are dead, Alexander and Mary Agnes (Mrs Thos Arthurs), and there are living, Mrs Henderson, Beckwith; Mrs Sadler, Carleton Place; Mrs Hill, North Augusta; John and Arthur on the homestead; Rev Wm D., Presbyterian pastor at Norval, and Rev Henry H., in the Presbyterian charge of Kirkfield. All the family were at home during the last moments. The late Mr Turner was a man of sound judgement and strong character. He was well known and highly respected. He never sought public distinction to and great extent, but was a school trustee for many years, retiring about ten years ago. He was a life-long consistent member of the Presbyterian church and was an elder in Appleton church ever since the separation of the charge from Almonte. He was a man of 78 years of useful life behind him and his sure reward before. His memory will not quickly die. The funeral on Thursday afternoon will be largely attended by friends and neighbours for many miles around.

    Mrs James Turner
After five weeks of illness borne with that patience and fortitude which had characterized her whole life, Mrs James Turner of Ramsay was on Saturday summoned to the home on many mansions prepared for those who endure unto the end. The late Mrs Turner was Mary Agnes Thom, a sister of the late John Thom, and was 75 years of age. She was married to Mr Turner fifty-seven years ago and together they celebrated the golden anniversary of the event seven years ago, surrounded by friends and grateful for the many sincere wishes for a long continuance of the tie that bound them. To then six sons and five daughters were born. Of these nine are still living. They are: John of the farm adjoining the homestead; William, Presbyterian minister at Norval; Henry H., also a minster at Kirkfield; James A., in Ramsay; and Arthur A., on the homestead; Margaret (Mrs Henderson) in Beckwith; Marion (Mrs Thos Sadler) near Carleton Place; Jessie A., (Mrs Hill) North Augusta, and Jane at home. Mr and Mrs Turner after their marriage had lived continuously on the farm upon which Mr Turner's parents had settled when they came from Stirling in Scotland to Canada seventy-eight years ago. The funeral of the late Mrs Turner took place on Tuesday from the home near Appleton to the eighth line cemetery, and was very largely attended, there being over eighty vehicles in the cortege as it wended its way to the place of burial. The pallbearers were five sons and one grandson of the deceased. Much sympathy is felt for Mr Turner, the family and friends in their bereavement.

    ?b?Obituary - Margaret Miller?/b?
One by one the early settlers are passing away from this scene of action - those who braved the hardships of pioneer life and carved out homes in the wilderness of Lanark county - leaving behind them names and memories which will Long live in the hearts of those who mourn their departure. On Sunday evening last another old resident was called to her reward in the person of Margaret Miller, relic of the late John Tom, sr., who was in her 89th year. Though she had reached such a great age, her death was somewhat unexpected, as she had been enjoying fairly good health, and only two weeks ago she attended the sacramental services in the Reformed Presbyterian Church in Almonte, of which denomination she had been a zealous member for over 60 years, and seldom was her place in the sanctuary vacant when circumstances permitted her being present, until the infirmities of old age prevented her from assembling regularly with God's people. Deceased was born in Lanarkshire, Scotland, in the year 1810, and there spent a good portion of her younger days. In 1832 she, accompanied by her husband and two children, left the land of their birth to seek their fortune in this country, and after living for a time in Ramsey they settled on the 11th line of Beckwith, where they remained for a few years, and in 1837 removed to the farm on the 12th line of Ramsey, where she died. On January the 4th 1841 her husband died suddenly leaving her with six small children (four sons and two daughters) the eldest about 11 years old, but with persevering industry and help of the children and friends she soon earned for herself and family a good, comfortable home, never forgetting her duty to God. The children theretofore mentioned are all living except Margaret (Mrs. James Waddell), of Pakenham, who died some years ago. The others were: John, on the homestead; William, of Pakenham; Mary, (Mrs. James Turner) and James, of Ramsey; And David, of Whitehurst. There are also alive 32 grandchildren and 40 great grandchildren. Our departed friend was a very highly respected resident, and will long be kindly remembered by those who had the pleasure of her acquaintance. The funeral took place on Tuesday to the family burying plot on the homestead and was very largely attended, testifying to the esteem in which deceased was held. The service at the house was conducted by her pastor Rev. E. M. Coleman, of Almonte, assisted by Rev. A. E. Michael of the same town, and Rev. G. T. Bayne, of Ashton. The pallbearers were her four sons.
