That peer of all tragedians ? Death ? last week made Pakenham township the stage of his fell activities. Two men living within a short distance one another, both possessed of these peculiar qualities which make life valuable and death regrettable, were called beyond the mists to the heaven we call Rest. On Saturday William Y. Wood, of the 9th line, who had been suffering from a spinal trouble, was relieved from suffering, having lived on this earth 58 years. He was a man known not so widely as well, famed more for his manhood than ambitious desire. He was a son of the late Walter Wood and had been twice married. His first wife, Miss Lizzie Smith of Blakeney, predeceased him some twenty-five years, leaving two sons, Walter and John. To his second wife, Miss Bella Moore, were born five children ? Misses Minnie and Maggie, at home, Allan, Willie, and one child which died in infancy. Mr Wood's death is the third that has taken place in his father's family within eight months. One sister, Jean, died in Janaury, and another, Ann, in August, and now Mr Wood. Three sisters survive, Mrs Jas Barker, Ramsay; Mrs S. Taylor, Ottawa, and Miss Janet at home. Pakenham township has lost a good citizen.

William married Isabella "Bella" Moore in 1885. Isabella was born in 1852 in Pakenham Township, Lanark County, Canada West; died on 2 Jul 1932 in Pakenham Township, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; was buried on 4 Jul 1932 in Auld Kirk Cemetery, Ramsay, Mississippi Mills, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada. Mrs William Y. Wood
There passed away on Saturday, July 2nd an aged and respected resident of the 9th concession of Pakenham, in the person of Isabella Moore, relict of the late William Y. Wood, after a lengthy illness in her 82nd year. Deceased who was a daughter of the late Mr and Mrs William Moore of White Lake district was married to the late Mr Wood about 47 years ago and went to reside on the 9th line on the farm where she died. She was of a quiet and retiring disposition and loved by everyone, making many friends who regret her demise. This union was blessed by a family of five children of whom four survive ? Minnie and William on the homestead, Allan of Indian Head, Sask; (Margaret), Mrs Stuart Boal of Cedar Hill. There were two stepsons, John B. Wood of Cedar Hill and Walter, deceased. There also survives 15 grandchildren. Her husband predeceased her about 24 years ago. The funeral took place on Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock from her late residence to the 8th line cemetery where interment was made by Rev J.P. Falconer of Pakenham and Rev G.F. Warren of Blakeney. The pallbearers were Messrs Alex Melanson. Alex Barker, George Boal, John Deugo, Milton Lindsay and John Dowdall.

Almost a Centenarian
Another of the early settlers of Lanark County passed quietly out of life on Monday last, when Mr Walter Wood, of Upper Pakenham, was summoned across the mysterious bourne whence none return. He had been ill but a week, though bedfast for a year prior to his death, and blind for the past six years. He was clearheaded to the last. Before he reached the closing decade of the century he had always been hale and vigorous. The late Mr Wood was born in Dundivan, near Airdrie, Scotland, in the year 1796, and therefore attended the great age of 98 years. In 1832 he married Mary Young, sister of the late Peter, Robert, and William Young, of Ramsay, and four days after the marriage they sailed from Scotland for Canada. A few months after their arrival they settled on the farm on the ninth line of Pakenham on which they lived the balance of their long lives, doing their full share of the pioneer work and enduring hardships incident to life in Lanark County in the thirties and forties. Mrs Wood died seven years ago. Seven children were born to them, viz.: Mrs Buchanan, Miss Janet Wood, W.Y. Wood, on the homestead; Mrs James Barker, Ramsay; Mrs Taylor, Mrs Edwards and Miss Jane Wood, of Ottawa. Fourteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren also mourn the loss of the venerable gentleman. Deceased possessed qualities that won for him the warm friendship of all who knew him, and he will be long and favourably remembered in the neighbourhood. His was a quiet disposition. He never sought public office. To the last he had a good memory, and was fond of relating incidents of life in these parts in the early days. He was an ardent Reformer, and a Presbyterian. The funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon, to the eighth line cemetery, when a very large procession followed the remains to their resting place ? a fitting testimony to the worth of the departed.

Walter married Mary Anne Young on 31 Mar 1832 in Gorbals, Lanarkshire, Scotland. Mary was born in 1809 in North Lanarkshire, Scotland; died on 27 May 1887 in Pakenham Township, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; was buried in Auld Kirk Cemetery, Ramsay, Mississippi Mills, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada. A Healthy Neighbourhood
Pakenham township must be an exceedingly healthy neighbourhood, if we judge by the facts contained in the following item, which has been kindly handed in to us by a resident of the above township: Within the compass of a mile on the 9th line of Pakenham there reside ten old settlers whose combined aged tote astonishing aggregate of 828 years - average of over the four score. As we know our readers will be interested to learn who the parties are, we give the names and ages as follows: ....... Mr. and Mrs. Walter Wood, aged 87 and 78 respectively, emigrated from Lanarkshire the same year as Mr. Waddell. At time of writing Mrs. Wood is laid up with what it is feared will prove a fatal illness.

P.S. - Since writing, the above we learn that Mrs. Wood died on Sunday. During her long residence in this district the deceased lady, by her many excellent qualities, won for herself a very large circle of warm friends, one and all of whom will receive with deep sorrow the news of her demise. The bereaved ones have our sincere sympathy.
