Late John Saunders was Widely Known and Esteemed.

The news of the death of Mr. John Saunders of Montaque on Sunday, October 4th was heard with deep regret by a large circle of relatives and friends. Mr. Saunders was in his 81st year and enjoyed the best of health until about a year ago when he was taken ill with lagrippe, which proved too much for him, his stomach and heart giving out under the strain.

He was born in Beckwith in 1843 (typo 1934?) moving to Montague with his parents when about two years old where he resided until his death. He was married in March 1860 to Miss Janet King of Beckwith who with three of the family predeceased him some years ago. He was a staunch churchman being a lifelong member of the parish of Franktown.

The burial services being conducted by Rev. John Osborne, rector of St. James Church assisted by Rev. R. B. Waterman of Carp, a former pastor and sincere friend of deceased.

He leaves to mourn his loss of family of five daughters and three sons, Mrs. Thos. Salter of Goodlands, Manitoba, Mrs. W. H. Griffith, John H. and James H. Saunders of Prospect, Samuel of Montaque and Mrs. Louis Irvine of Barwick, Ontario, Jane E. and Florence L. also his grandson John Saunders Griffith who still remains on the homestead and his eldest sister Mrs. Catharine James of Kars, and his youngest brother Mr. Uriah Saunders of Osgoode.

The funeral, which was very largely attended was conducted by Mr. J. J. Marsh of Smiths Falls. The family wish to express their sincerest thanks for the many kindnesses shown to him all through his late illness and their bereavement by the friends and neighbours of the deceased.
