    Former Almonte Resident Passes
Andrew Dunlop Dies At Home Of Daughter In Carleton Place
    (Carleton Place Canadian)
Mr Andrew Dunlop, an esteemed and well known resident of Carleton Place and Almonte, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs Wilbert J. Porterfield, Lake Avenue West on Wednesday of last week. Mr Dunlop was in his 90th year. The late Mr Dunlop was a man younger looking than his years and enjoyed good health until his illness which occurred on Saturday, October 28th. Up until that tie he was able to take his walks to the barber shop and enjoyed meeting and conversing with old and new friends whom he met from time to time. Mr Dunlop's passing is widely mourned by his friends throughout the whole district.
    Born In Scotland
Born in Paisley Scotland, in 1855, a son of the late Mr and Mrs Andrew Dunlop, he came to Canada with his parents in 1870, and settled in Guelph, and later at Fergus, Ont. In 1872, the family moved to Almonte where Mr Dunlop entered the employ of the Rosamond Woolen Company. He remained there 49 years, 40 of them as overseer. In 1922 Mr Dunlop was forced to retire due to ill health. On September 4th 1878, Mr Dunlop was married to the former Miss Agnes Lindsay Gilmour, daughter of the late Mr and Mrs James Gilmour at the home of her parents on the 8th line of Ramsay, by the late Rev Mr. Lougheed In 1936 Mr and Mrs Dunlop came to visit with their sonin- law and daughter, Mr and Mrs W.J. Porterfield, and were only here a short time when Mrs Dunlop passed away, since which time Mr Dunlop has made his home in Carleton Place.
    An Old Citizen
The late Mr Dunlop was one of Almonte's oldest and best known citizens and since coming to reside in this town had made a host of friends. He was well read and kept close contact with current events through his daily newspaper. The death of his young grandson, Flying Officer Andrew Porterfield, overseas, was an almost overwhelming blow from which Mr Dunlop never seemed to recover. As husband and father he had all the vicissitudes of the years with a brave heart and cheerful courage and it was always more natural of him to think of others than of himself. Mr Dunlop lived a full and well rounded life wit an abundance of philosophy and good humour that enabled him to endure a great deal and he leaves behind him a good name and the inspiration of a friendship that will be cherished by those who knew it.
    Prominent Mason
During his long years of residence in Almonte, Mr. 'Dunlop was active in many of the town's affairs. He was a member of Bethany United Church and was deeply interested in its welfare. He was a member of Mississippi Lodge, A.F. & A.M. A Very Sudden Death
On Wednesday night our citizens were shocked to hear to the sudden death of Mr Andrew Dunlop, sen., from either neuralgia of the heart or apoplexy. Mr Dunlop had been complaining of a pain in his chest, and on Wednesday at nine o'clock he went home from his work (in the designing room of No 1 Mill). He remained at home the balance of the day, and partook of dinner, also of a light supper at five o'clock. About seven o'clock, while the younger members of the family were enjoying themselves, they heard a peculiar gurgling sound in the father's bedroom. Hastening in, they found him unconscious, and, although Dr Lynch was in attendance inside of a few minutes, the spirit had flown ere he arrived. To those who had been in the habit of seeing Mr Dunlop daily ? the picture of health ? the news of his death was almost beyond belief; but investigation proved it only too true. Deceased was one of our most esteemed citizens. He was of a quiet disposition, but those who were most intimate with him use nothing but the kindest expressions in commenting on his life and character. He was born in Paisley, Scotland, August 29, 1828, and was 63 years old at death. He came to Canada twenty-one years ago, and for the past nineteen years had been a resident of this town. He was twice married, and leaves a grown-up family of three sons (John R., Andrew and David) and four daughters, who, with the widow, have the genuine sympathy of all in their great loss.

Andrew married Annie Lees in 1865 in Scotland. Annie (daughter of David Lees) was born in 1841 in Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland; died on 24 Jun 1915 in Almonte, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; was buried on 26 Jun 1915 in Auld Kirk Cemetery, Ramsay, Mississippi Mills, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada. Mrs Andrew Dunlop
Mrs Andrew Dunlop had been ailing for some time, but a few weeks ago she was taken seriously ill of stomach trouble, and gradually sank, lovingly and tenderly cared for by her daughters, until Wednesday of this week, when she passed quietly away, thus securing a blessed release from suffering from which no relief could be secured. The late Mrs Dunlop, whose name was Annie Lees, was a daughter of the late David Lees of Paisley, Scotland, and was married to Mr Andrew Dunlop while yet living in the land of her birth. About forty years ago they came to Canada, and spent a couple of years at Harriston before coming to Almonte where the home has since been. Mr Dunlop died about twenty-four years ago, Jean about fifteen years ago, and Walter when three years old. Of the family still living David is at Bridgeview, Mass, Maggie is in town, Annie (Mrs Wemyss Ballantyne) is at Sherbrooke, Que, and Tena at Almonte. The deceased was a woman of quiet and retiring disposition. Her heart was in her home, and to make and keep it "home" was the aim of her life. She delighted in flowers, and spent hours in her garden, amid the bloom and beauty secured by her careful tending. The late Mrs Dunlop was a member of the Presbyterian church and while able to do so was a regular attendant at St Andrew's church and her life was lived in strict correspondence with the profession she made. The family circle was one bound together by the cords of love, and the calling away of the mother had caused real and deep sorrow, and much sympathy is felt for those who are left. The funeral take place on Saturday afternoon, at two o'clock to the eighth line cemetery.

He was ninety five years and seven months at the time of his death. With the exception of being somewhat hard of hearing, he preserved his faculties and was hale and haearty until a short time before his death. He was an enthusiastic curler for seventy-five years, fifty of which were connected with the Almonte club and the local curlers showed their respect for him by turning out in a body to his funeral.

At twenty-one years of age he went to Glasgow and enlisted for seven years in the famous Black Watch, or 42nd. Highlanders. He was first sent to Ireland and from there to Giblralter and finally Malta at all of which places he performed garrison duty. He had many strange tales to tell of his experience as a soldier in the latter two places. His term of service having expired, he returned to Auld Scotia and in 1842 immigrated to Canada with his family in the Renfrewshire. It took them two months to reach Montreal. They took the boat to Smiths Falls thence by wagon to Almonte.
He was emplyed by Mr. Wylie. He purchased part of lot 19, concession 8, Ramsay and began his labours in the new country. AT that time there were only six or eight houses in Almonte. For about forty years he worked on the farm when he retired to spend the rest of his days as a citizen of our town. His wife died about seven years ago in her ninetieth year. While the remains of Mrs. Templeton, jr., were lying in the house on Friday morning (the two families both live under the same roof) were shocked when a member of the household made the solemn announcement that Mrs. James Templeton, sen., had also passed to her reward. The venerable lady quietly fell into the sleep from which there is no waking, and the members of the family for a time could scarcely realize the fact that the grim messenger had again served his fatal summons in their dwelling. Extreme age and the excitement consequent on her daughter-in-law's illness and demise are given as the cause of the old lady's death.

The late Mrs. Templeton was born in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland, Dec. 29, 1804, and was within a few days of being 89 years of age when called away. Her maiden name was Agnes Lindsay. Mr. and Mrs. Templeton were united in marriage in Scotland over seventy years ago, and during that unusually long period of wedded life were greatly attached to each other. They came to Canada in 1842, settling in Ramsay that same year, and they have lived continuously in Ramsay and Almonte ever since. Eight children were born to them, seven of whom survived, viz.: Mrs. James Gilmour, Mrs A.A. Gilmour, Mrs. Wm. Young and Jas. Templeton, of this town; Mrs. McKillop of Beachburg: Mrs D. Ledgerwood, of Arnprior; and Wm. Templeton, of Emerson, Manitoba. There are about 125 grandchildren and great grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild - the son of Mr. Wm. Young, of Perth.

Deceased had always been in good health, and able to attend to her household duties up to the ever of her death. The funeral took place on Sunday afternoon, when a very large cortege followed the remains to their resting place in the eighth line cemetery. Among those who attended were many of the oldest settlers in the neighbourhood. The sympathy of all is with the patriarchal husband in the great loss which he has sustained, and which he feels most keenly.
