    -------------------------------------------------------
William Henry Leach & Elizabeth Lemmex

William Henry Leach (1780-1878) was born in Enniscorthy, Wexford County, Ireland in 1780.
He was the second son of William Leach & Anne Edwards and the oldest son to eventually
immigrate to Canada (his brothers George & James remained in Ireland). He married Elizabeth
"Betsy" Lemmex in Ireland on Apr 16, 1804.
Elizabeth Lemmex (1786-1874), the daughter of John Lemmex Sr. (1770-1832) & Ida
Solman, was also born in Wexford County, Ireland.. A plaque in the memory of John Lemmex
Sr. and his wife as two of the many Wexford Irish settlers who arrived in Beckwith Township in
June 1819 can be found in the cemetery in Franktown, Ont.
There is some confusion as to Elizabeth's maiden name (as it is not shown on her tombstone).
There have been some references to Lummex, Lumax, as well as Lummox, perhaps because of
a gentleman named Thomas Lummox, who settled on Lot 6, Concession 8 in 1822.
Their first four children (John, Edith, Ann, Thomas) were born in Ireland ... all in Wexford
County except for John who was born in Carlow. In 1819, William was awarded a sealed grant
by the Crown King George IV to 100 acres in Beckwith Twp, Lanark County in Upper Canada. In
June of that year, he, his wife Elizabeth and their four children arrived in Canada (Port of
Quebec) aboard the British frigate "Maria". Likely joining them at that time was Thomas Leech
(1793-1852) and his wife Frances Cooke (1792-1879) as well as another William Leach (1792-
1857) & his wife Harriet Hawkins (1795-1871). William Henry's exact relationship to both
Thomas & the other William remains a mystery.
William Henry's sister Susan Leech (1788-1873) & her husband James Lucas (1782-1844)
arrived in Canada in 1815. His brother Samuel Leech, his sisters Elizabeth & Esther (with
husband William Willis) as well as his widowed mother Anne Edwards arrived in Beckwith in
    1820.
When the family arrived in Canada, their family name was spelt "Leech". The change to "Leach"
probably happened quickly as most records after 1822 showed the latter spelling. The family
settled on lot 12 on the ninth concession of Beckwith. In 1822, they built their permanent
residence and it today stands as the oldest house in Beckwith Twp.
William & Elizabeth had another seven children (James, Henry, William, Luke, Elizabeth, Robert
& Keziah) after their arrival in Canada ... all were born between 1820 to 1833 in Beckwith Twp.
William Henry died on Jan 31, 1878. Elizabeth passed away several years earlier on Apr 16,
1874. Both are buried in the public cemetery at Franktown, Ont. (just north of Smiths Falls) ...
    plots 240 & 241.
