    Mr William McEwen
The death of Mr Wm McEwen of Ramsay on Sunday severed one of the very few links which now connected the early settlement of this part of Canada with the past. Not only does his long life emphasize this connection, but the fact that he was the first white child born in the township, and that he first saw the light beneath the covering of a brush tent hastily erected, tends to accentuate it. The father died when he was young and being the eldest of the family he had to assume a large share of the burden of life and was prevented from taking advantage of even the meagre educational advantages of that time, but he was a great reader and everything from which he could gain knowledge was devoured with avidity in his spare moments. He was twenty years a member of the Ramsay library, and many of the best books therein helped him to expand his mind. About six years ago his eyes gave out and he became totally blind, a direct result of the strain caused by reading. In 1851 he was married to Miss Marion Sutherland, a sister of the late Angus Sutherland, and to them ten children were born. Two died in infancy and the eldest, Thomas, in manhood. Those still living are Mrs (Rev) Whitelaw, Mrs J. Sutherland, Stafford; Mrs Thos Bailey in Quebec, Mrs Jas Bailey in Alberta, Robert in the States, William at home, and Mary in town. Mrs McEwen died about two-and-a-half years ago. The funeral took place on Tuesday to the eighth line cemetery. Mrs Jas Black and Mr Robert McLean of Ramsay are probably the only ones left of those who were of Mr McEwen's age.

William married Marion Sutherland in 1851. Marion (daughter of Angus Sutherland and Margaret Fraser) was born on 8 Aug 1831 in Ramsay Township, Lanark County, Canada West; died on 16 Apr 1906 in Almonte, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; was buried in Auld Kirk Cemetery, Ramsay, Mississippi Mills, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada.
