Andrew Young Dies Suddenly On Sunday Evg.
Prominent Resident of Almonte Was In His Seventy Fifth Year
With His Brother Robert Was Founder of Mississippi Iron Works Which Became Flourishing Business Under Their Care.
Mr. Andrew Young, for many years a leading citizen and businessman of Almonte, died very suddenly at he family residence on Church street on Sunday evening. He was in his 75th year. He had a paralytic stroke on Sunday forenoon from which he never rallied. With his death Almonte loses one of its best known and most respected residents. Although he had not been in robust health for some years Mr. Young's sudden illness and death came at a great surprise and shock to his many friends. He had a long and successful business career in conjunction with his brother, Robert who is now a resident of Ottawa. Together they established a foundry and machine shop business in Almonte which became widely known as the Mississippi Iron Works. They employed a large staff and built up a flourishing industry. In particular they catered to the farm trade, and their ploughs and other agricultural implements were noted for their excellence. A number of years ago they retired from business, and the Mississippi Iron Works was taken over by Mr. A.K. McLean, a son-in-law of Mr. Robert Young. The late Mr. Young took an active interest in municipal affairs and or several years was a member of the town council. He was a Presbyterian in religion and deeply interested in the affairs of his church. He was a good sportsman, and in particular was fond of curling. He was a director and past president of the Almonte Rink Company. For many years he was chosen on the rinks representing Almonte at the bonspiels and will be remembered by the older curlers of the Ottawa Valley. The rink of the Young Brothers was a great organization in its day, an was known far and wide. Mr. Young was the youngest son of the late Mr. and Mrs Peter Young and was born at Bennies Corners. There was a family eleven children, seven sons and four daughters, only two of whom now survive, his sister, Mrs John MacFarlane, of Almonte, and his brother Robert, of Ottawa. In 1882 he was married to Miss Alice June Glover, daughter of the late Mr and Mrs John Glover, of Bennies Corners and Almonte. The marriage took place at the bride's home in Almonte and the officiating minister was the late Rev. J.H. Edmondson. To this union was born three sons and one daughter, Russell, of Philadelphia; Morton, who died in 1911; Etta, Mrs E.H. Knight, of Ottawa, and Vincent, of Toronto. The untimely death of his son Morton, who was a very promising student at Toronto University, when he passed away in his 21st year, was a severe blow. The funeral was held on Wednesday from the family residence to the Auld Kirk Cemetery and was largely attended. Rev Mr. Moore conducted the service. The pallbearers were Messrs. M.R. Young, Dr. W.C. Young, Peter McCallum, M.R. McFarlane, A.C. Wylie and John Neilson. Amongst those from out of town at the funeral were Mr. Robert Young, of Ottawa; Mr and Mrs Russell Young of Philadelphia, Mr Vincent Young, of Toronto; Mr and Mrs E.H. Knight, of Ottawa; Dr. and Mrs O.C. Spratt and Mrs W.T. Urquhart, of Ottawa; Mrs Robert Baird of Carleton Place; and many other old friends from Smiths Falls and Carleton Place.

Andrew married Alice Jane Glover in 1883 in Almonte, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada. Another Link Broken
This week it becomes our painful duty to chronicle the death of another of Canada's veteran pioneers in the person of Mr Peter Young, of Ramsay, which took place on Thursday evening last, at his late residence on the 7th line. Up to a week before his death he had been in his usual health, and gave promise of living many years; but a cold was contacted which gradually wore out the aged fellow; and although surrounded by every comfort, and supplied with everything that loving hearts and willing hands could bestow, yet the silken cord was snapped asunder, and the spirit returned to God who gave it, again verifying the truthfulness of the old adage, "the young may die, but old must." By death Mr Young, Ramsay loses one of its most highly esteemed residents and the news of his demise will be received with feelings of sorrow and regret by an unusually large circle of friends, as few men in this district were better or more favourably known than deceased. Mr Young was born at Braehead, near Glasgow, Scotland, on October 9th, 1804, and was consequently in his 82nd year when he died. At the age of ten years he formed the acquaintance of Jeanie Erskine, then living in Glasgow. That acquaintanceship grew, and ripened into marriage on November 14th, 1828, the ceremony being performed by Rev John Bar, of Dovehill. In the spring of 1832 Mr Young came to Canada and settled on his farm in the township of Ramsay, where, with the exception of one year, he lived continuously till death, and brought up his large family of seven sons and four daughters, all of whom, with their mother, survive to mourn his loss, and all the more on account of its being the first break in the family. The family are as follows; Sons ? William, Alex E., Peter, John, Robert, Stephen, and Andrew; daughters ? Mrs John McCarter; Mrs Angus Sutherland, Mrs H. Cavers, and Mrs John McFarlane. At the funeral, which took place on Saturday last, and was very largely attended, notwithstanding the severity of the weather, the seven sons acted as pall-bearers, it having been their wish to lay in their last resting-place the remains of their venerable father ? a sight we never witness before, and are not likely to again. All the members of the family are comfortably situated, all are married and living in homes of their own, either in Almonte or within a very few miles of it, and all can meet together on an hour's notice. Mr and Mrs Young celebrated their golden wedding seven years ago last November, with nearly all their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren around them, which was quite a large company, and very comforting to the old couple. In many respected the late Mr Young was no ordinary man. He had a commanding appearance, stood over six feet high, and in his younger days possessed great physical strength. For many years, however, although always enjoying excellent health, he had been feeble in body; but, though feeble in body, he was not in mind. He had a strong, determined will and a clear, vigorous, inventive intellect. Fertile in resources, and strong in selfreliance, he was ever master of the occasion ? sure, like the old Roman general, to "find a way or make one" to accomplish his purpose. He was an enthusiastic Scotchman, of the most hospitable kind, and always retained a strong love for the land of his nativity. In religious matters he was a consistent Presbyterian, and in politics a sound Reformer, although he never took a very active part in the latter. But he has gone to his rest. he bore his last illness with great patience and resignation, and died with a strong and vivid hope of a blessed future.

    Obit. Mrs Peter Young
One by one the old settlers of Ramsay have been passing away to their long rest, until very few of those who settled her in the early years of this century are left. One of the earliest, Mrs Peter Young, of the 7th line Ramsay, passed away last Monday morning. She was the relict of the late Peter Young, who died in 1886. Both Mr and Mrs Young died in their 82nd year. Mrs Young's maiden name was Jean Erskine. She was born in Glasgow on Jan 14, 1810, and was married to Mr Young in that city. In 1832 the came to Ramsay, and resided in that township continuously to the time of their death. Mr and Mrs Young had seven sons and four daughter, all of whom are living and settled in comfortable homes of their own. The sons are William, Peter, John, Robert and Andrew, living in Almonte; Alexander, in Toronto; and Stephen, on the homestead. The daughters are Mrs John McCarter, Mrs Angus Sutherland, Mrs Henry Cavers and Mrs John McFarlane. Mrs Young enjoyed good health until she fell a few years ago and injured herself. She was able to move about the house until about two weeks ago. Her death was caused by a general break-up of the system through old age. Mrs Young was of a very gentle and kind disposition, and was greatly beloved by all who knew her. Both she and her husband were well-known and respected on account of their genial nature, and many a pleasant evening was spent under their hospitable roof that will long be remembered by their friends and neighbours. The large cortege that followed her remains to the 8th line cemetery on Wednesday showed the high esteem in which the deceased and her family are held in the community. Rev R. Knowles, of Pembroke, was the officiating clergyman, and six sons of the deceased were the pallbearers.

    Mr John Glover
One of the pioneers of Blakeney (then Rosebank) and one of the oldest settlers of Ramsay township, passed to his eternal rest early Wednesday morning, when Mr John Glover answered the inevitable call in his 83rd year. Mr Glover had enjoyed good health until a few months ago but had since that time gradually weaken from the accumulated strain of many years. Deceased was born in Keith, Scotland, and married there. In 1854 he came to Canada and settled at Rosebank, on the property where the Rosebank House now stands. After living there for some years he moved to Bennie's Corners and finally to Almonte about 1870. Since becoming a citizen of the town Mr Glover had made many friends in his quiet way as was evidenced by the large attendance at the funeral this (Thursday) afternoon. Interment was made from the home of Mr Wm Glover with whom he has resided for the past few years. His wife died seven years ago and three of the children, John, Miss Maggie and Mrs Patterson of Philadelphia, also passed away some years ago. The surviving members of the family are: William in Almonte; Adam in Toronto; Mrs Wm Pattie, Carleton Place; Mrs Sinclair, Calgary; Mrs A. Young and Mrs D. Williams, Almonte. Mr Glover had never taken any active interest in public affairs, but his long life had equipped him with a vast sum of experience which would have ably fitted him for office to trust had he so desired. His life will be long remembered by those with whom he had grown in years.

John married Elizabeth Jenkinson in 1845 in Scotland. Elizabeth was born in Jun 1825 in Edinburgh, City of Edinburgh, Scotland; died on 25 Feb 1902 in Almonte, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; was buried in Auld Kirk Cemetery, Ramsay, Mississippi Mills, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada. A Good Women Gone
Two years ago Mrs John Glover was stricken with paralysis. From this she almost fully recovered, but again about a month ago she suffered from another stroke, and from this time on, though nature struggled hopefully against great odds, the battle was an unequal one, and on Tuesday night the end came calmly and peacefully, the burdens of life were laid down, and she entered into rest that is beyond. The deceased was born in Edinburgh in June 1825, and was married to Mr. Glover in the old land. In 1854 they came to Canada and settled in Ramsay, near Snedden's afterwards moving to Bennie's Corners, where they lived for several years before coming to Almonte. A family of eleven children were born to them, two dying in infancy, and two others, Maggie and John, a few years ago. Those living are Mrs. Pattie, Carleton Place; Mrs Patterson, Philadelphia; Mrs Sinclair, Mrs A. Young, William, and Mrs D. Williams, Almonte and Adam, of Toronto. There are twenty-three grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. These with her husband mourn the loss of a kind mother and devoted wife. Mrs Glover was for about thirty-three years a resident of Almonte, and in 1896 she and Mr. Glover celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of their marriage. The deceased was a very quiet, unassuming person -- one of those who seldom noticed until they are laid aside, and then is revealed something of the kindness, sympathy and generosity which have characterized the life. She was a consistent member of St. John's Presbyterian church, and a regular attendant of the house of prayer when it was possible for her to be there. The funeral takes place Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock to the eighth line cemetery.

    Children:
    1. 3. Alice Jane Glover was born in 1860 in Almonte, Lanark County, Canada West; died on 23 Sep 1940 in Ottawa, Carleton County, Ontario, Canada; was buried in Auld Kirk Cemetery, Ramsay, Mississippi Mills, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada.
