    Mrs Reid's Sudden Call
Mrs Wm. P. Reid of Cedar Hill was taken suddenly ill, and her physician advised taking her to the hospital for treatment. She was accordingly taken to the General Hospital at Ottawa and on Tuesday night she was operated upon for obstruction of the bowels. First reports received by the friends were encouraging and hopeful, but adverse conditions developed, and on Wednesday, Mrs Reid succumbed to the inroads of the disease. The remains were brought to the home of which so recently she had been the light and comfort, and the funeral will take place of Saturday at one o'clock (service a half-hour earlier) from her husband's residence to the eighth line cemetery in Ramsay. The late Mrs Reid was born in Fitzroy 46 years ago, and was the daughter of Mr Chas Lawson, and was one of a large family, her death being the sixth. There are still two sisters and two brothers living - Mrs A. Cavanagh of Fitzroy, Mrs J. Gilmour of Almonte, Mrs Chas W. Lawson at Cedar Hill, and P.A. Lawson in Cass City, Mich. The deceased was married to Mr Wm. P. Reid about twelve years ago, and two children - a boy of eleven years and a girl of nine survive. The late Mrs Reid was well known in Almonte, having lived in town for some time, and only a month ago was a visitor here, when she was enjoying the best of health. Not only in her home will she be missed, but in the community in which she lived. She was a active worker in church circles and in many other ways her life told for good. Much sympathy is felt for the friends in the sore bereavement that has so suddenly fallen upon their home.

Obit. ? The Late Samuel Reid
On Thursday afternoon of last week Pakenham township lost one of its oldest and most esteem citizens in the person of Mr Samuel Reid, of Cedar Hill, who succumbed after an exceedingly painful illness from nephritic trouble. Deceased was born in Paisley, Scotland, seventy-two years ago, and learned the weaving trade with his father in that place. He came to Canada when he was sixteen years old, and worked for a time in the first factory in this district, established by the late Mr James Rosamond at Carleton Place ? then known as "Morphy's Falls." Mr Reid afterward worked in Westmeath for a time, then came to Almonte. Half-a-century ago he was a resident of this town, and for years, in partnership with Mr John McIntosh (the firm of Reid & McIntosh), managed a woolen factory business on the site now occupied by the Anchor Knitting Mill. Later on he took to farming, and apart from a few years' residence in the township of Dalhousie, spent the balance of his lengthened life on his farms in Pakenham. Mr Reid was twice married ? first to Mary Paul, sister of Messrs, John and Wm Paul, Ramsay; some years after her death, in the fifties, he was united to Euphemia Paul (daughter of the late Wm Paul), who survives. To the first union two children were born ? Mrs W.H. McMunn, of Dauphin, Manitoba; and Mrs Geo Ferguson, of Wawanesa, in the same province; and seven children of the second union survive, viz.: Mrs Wm Smith and Miss Agnes Reid, of Vancouver, B.C.; Samuel and James Reid, of Reston, Man.; John A. Reid, of Smith's Falls; and Mrs W. Buchanan and Wm Reid, on the homestead in Pakenham. The late Mr Reid was an intelligent and well-read man, a kind-hearted friend and a good neighbour. In politics he was an uncompromising Liberal, and throughout his life he was a consistent Christian, leaving his impress for good on the section in which he resided. He never sought public office. The funeral took place on Saturday afternoon, to the eighth line cemetery, Ramsay, and was a very large one, over one hundred carriages being in the cortege. Among the mourners present were Mr and Mrs Jas Moffatt, of Carleton Place, both of whom have gone beyond life's span. Mrs Moffatt is a sister of Mr Reid, and the last of the family now living. The services at the house and the grave were conducted by Rev Mr Logie, of Pakenham, to whose congregation Mr Reid belonged, and the Rev. gentleman in his address eulogized the deceased for the virtues that adorned his life.

Samuel married Euphemia Paul in 1856. Euphemia (daughter of William John Paul and Jane Matthew) was born on 23 May 1830 in Ramsay Township, Lanark County, Canada West; died on 25 Oct 1910 in Cedar Hill, Pakenham Township, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; was buried on 27 Oct 1910 in Auld Kirk Cemetery, Ramsay, Mississippi Mills, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada. Death Of An Old Settler
We are called upon this week to chronicle the death of one of the pioneer settlers of Lanark County ? of whom but a few are now living ? in the person of Mrs Wm Paul, sr., of the 7th line Ramsay. The sad event took place on Friday last, and, although not unexpected, the news of her death was received with sorrow by a large circle of friends. The funeral took place on Monday, and the large number who followed her remains to the grave showed the universal esteem and respect in which she was held by the community. Deceased was one of the very earliest settlers in Ramsay having with her husband, emigrated from Glasgow, Scotland ? their native place ? in the year 1821 ? sixty years ago ? and settled in Ramsay the same year, and on the farm on which she resided continuously until her death. She attained ripe old age of 84 years, and for the past 26 years had been an invalid, caused by a severe attack of rheumatic fever ? an affliction which was borne with exemplary patience and resignation. Although physically disabled she was strong intellectually, at it was always a pleasure to her to relate her experiences in the early years of her life in Ramsay ? a time when Almonte had no existence, and when Lanark County was almost a trackless forest. Few can imagine the hardships endured or the obstacles which had to be overcome by the settlers at that time, and the present generation should not forget that they have these hardy pioneers to thank for paving the way to the fertile farms and prosperous villages which are to be seen throughout the country, Thus one by one they are passing away until at present but a very few remain; and are leaving behind them example of industry energy and perseverance which will not soon be forgotten.
