?b?James Butler settled in Goulbourne, Ontario, Canada?/b?
    Posted 01 Oct 2007 by engelmom1

James Butler arrived in Quebec with the British 99th Regiment to fight against the American Colonists and to protect Britains interest in the remaining colonies in Quebec. With the War of 1812 over and things settled down he asked the king of England to grant him land so that he could settle there. In 1819 the King granted him land in an area now known as Goulbourne, Ontario within an area given to the men who fought for the King. In giving the land to these retired army men, the King planned to also have the men defend the land if need be at any later date.

So James Butler settled and took a wife, Ellen Harkin, the daughter of the neighbour next door. Children were a forgone conclusion in the lives of this couple and they had many. Included in these many children was a son named William Butler born in or about 1823 after James and Ellen settled the land that the king granted James.

James married Eleanor Ellen Harkin on 22 Jul 1818. Eleanor was born in 1801 in Dungiven, County Londonderry, Northern Ireland; died on 7 Nov 1874 in Ottawa, Carleton County, Ontario, Canada; was buried in Shillington Cemetery, Munster, Ottawa Municipality, Ontario, Canada. From Biog of his grandson Dr. William Simpson, Lacombe Alberta

The paternal grandfather, William Simpson, was born in the north of Ireland and located in Ontario at an early day, making the trip across the ocean in an old sailing vessel, and coming to Ontario by way of the St. Lawrence and Ottawa rivers. He was active in the building of the Rideau canal locks at Ottawa. When he came to Canada the present prosperous community of Ottawa consisted of but a few log houses, known as Bytown. He was a true pioneer of the country and he homesteaded land which was nothing but woods. To him fell the laborious task of clearing it and in due time he had one of the finest farms in the district, and resided thereon until his demise.
