The only son of James Gemmill and Susannah Simpson, James was born at Paisley, Scotland in 1818. He was only two when his parents came to Canada with the Lanark Society Settlers in 1821. His mother died while the family was still camped at the Lanark Military settlement in 1821.

James married Jennet Bridget in Apr 1840 and they raised a large family of 4 boys and 4 girls on their Ramsay Twp farm. Described as a "beautiful farm" in his obituary, their home was on the East half Lot 5, Conc 11. Following Jennet's death in 1869, James married Agnes Henry but they later separated.

James was a victim of influenza; he died Feb 1899 at Carleton Place, aged 80. His obituary confirms he was buried at Cram's Cemetery.

    _HASHTAG:
Came to Lanark County between 1820 - 1822

    Died:
Born December 21, 1818 at Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland, James came to Canada in 1821 as a two year-old with his parents, James Gemmill and Susannah Simpson. Arriving at Lanark Village in July 1821, the Gemmill family were housed at a temporary military encampment set up for the newly arrived Scottish immigrants. Tragically, James' mother died while they were still camped at Lanark Village.

So James grew up in the wilds of Lanark County being raised by his widower father. When older, young James and his older sister Mary would help transform their wooded 100 acre land grant in south Ramsay Township (East 1/2 Lot 5, Conc. 11) into a viable farm. James Jr. would later inherit the farm with its meandering creek from his father, which was described as a "beautiful farm" in his obituary.

James married Jennet Bridget in April 1840 and they raised eight children at their family farm, situated just northeast of Appleton. Jennet died in 1869 and James married the widow Agnes (Henry) Campbell in April 1869 but they later separated.

James sold his farm in 1871 and moved to nearby Carleton Place. For 28 years, James lived at what is now 38 Bridge St. beside the old Central School (now the Post Office). James set up shop as a grocer and provided Carleton Place residents with fresh produce and food supplies during the 1870s and 1880s.

James' obituary in the Ottawa Journal (30 Jan 1899) provides a nice insight on James in his latter years:

"For a long time he has been in poor health, and could not move far from the house, but on pleasant days, sitting in his chair on the verandah, gave and sought a social life with the passing townsfolk and neighbours of by-gone days, ... his kindly word to children and demeanor to neighbours, his bluff good-humoured salutations, indexed the fuller phases of his personality."

James died at home from influenza on January 27, 1899, after a long life of 80 years. His obituary confirms he was buried at Cram's Cemetery, which became St. Fillans, and is now part of Beckwith United Cemetery.

Brief bio by M. S. Manning, James' 3G-grandson.

James married Jenet Bridget on 8 Apr 1840 in Ramsay Township, Lanark County, Canada West. Jenet (daughter of Thomas Bridget and Jennet Stinson) was born in 1816 in Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland; died on 9 Feb 1869 in Almonte, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; was buried in Feb 1869 in Lanark County, Ontario, Canada. Mr. and Mrs. Willoughby, Former Residents of Brockville Celebrate Their Golden Wedding at Carleton Place in Ottawa Ontario CanadaCarleton Place Canadian: Tuesday last was the anniversary of the fiftieth wedding-day of Mr. and Mrs. William Willoughby, Lake Avenue. It was made the occasion of a grand rally of the children. Ten were born, and ten survive. There has been nobreak. Seven came to the jubilee, namely, Walter, from Grand Rapids, Mich., bringing his w ife and daughter:George, Almonte, ex-Warden of the county, with his wife: Mrs. Edwards and her husband, Brockville: Mrs. Haydon and Mrs. Kelly with their husbands,Almonte: Isaac with his wife and children, from Pakenham: Susan, the youngest, lives at home. William, who has an extensive farm in Manitoba.Charles, a contractor in Regina, and Richard, a civil servant in Brandon, were unable to get away, but they sent golden mementoes. Walter came on Friday. It was unexpected as he sent no word. It is ten years since he met his parents, and there was great joy in the house. The scene on Tuesday of the flower-fringed lawns under the spreadinWilliam and Eleanor came to Canada in 1853 with their infant daughter Grace Anne (1) and William's three little brothers: Abraham (10), Isaac (7) and Jacob (4). An immigrant ticket at that time paid for two adults and four children. At that time, all emigrant tickets included fourchildren. Later money was sent for Mr. Willoughby's father, Charles and mother Marie. Also seven sisters and Mrs. Willoughby's Parents. Their journey to Montreal took nine weeks and nine days. They had to provide their own food en route. However, they were underway much longer than usual and ran out of food and had to buy more on board. When they landed they did not have enough money left to go on to Brockville where Eleanor hadcousins. William, a stonemason, got work in Montreal, and the family stayed on the ship??? As they left the ship Mrs. Willoughby found a purse containing a sum of money (including a gold coin) a very good omen. They went to Brockville, three years thence to Farmersville, now Athens, OntarioWilliam was a master builder and also acted as an undertaker. Mrs. Willoughby had a millinery shop. William went to night school and became a good reader and writer. Up to this time he had had very littleschooling.Later they moved to Almonte and then to Carleton Place. He built a great many buildings in this area.
