    ?b?BLAKENEY NEWS?/b?
Last Thursday this section lost one of its pioneer settlers in the person of the late Mr John Arthur, sr. The deceased was a man possessed of a rugged constitution and did more hard work in his life time than most men. He was born in Ireland near Coleranne in 1822, and left there for Philadelphia in 1851. After spending ten years in the States he came to Canada and was a resident of Almonte for six years, two of which he was watchman for the late Mr James Rosamond. In 1867 he moved to what was known as the Ryan farm which he cleared and rendered on of the best in the neighbourhood. In 1888 he sold his farm to his son, James and removed to the one adjoining Rosebank on the tenth line where he resided until his death. He married Margaret Crow, who survives him, in the year 1845. His family still living are (Margaret) Mrs Slater, of Waskada, Man, Letitia and Annie, who reside with their aged mother, John and James, of Ramsay, and Samuel of Pakenham. Miss Elizabeth Arthur, of Carleton Place, is a sister and Mr Thomas Arthur, of Appleton, is a brother of the deceased. He was a man of sterling character, opposed to wrong doing in any form, honest and upright in the truest sense of the term, and set a good example to those around him. He was confined to his bed for several months but never murmured or complained. He had no dread of death, his last words being "I am glad to go home to be with my many friends." The funeral, which took place on Saturday, was very large, showing that the deceased had a very large circle of friends who wished to pay their last tribute of respect. The aged widow and the bereaved ones have the sympathy of the community. The pallbearers were Messrs Thomas Lawrie, John Stewart, Robert Stewart, Jas McDougall, Abraham Bingham and William Young.

John married Martha Crow in 1845. Martha was born on 5 Apr 1825 in County Antrim, Ulster Province, Northern Ireland; died on 26 Apr 1906 in Ramsay Township, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; was buried in Auld Kirk Cemetery, Ramsay, Mississippi Mills, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada. LINES
Written on the death of Buchanan Paterson, who died
    15th Feb., 1881.
Again Death's cold, dull hand His sceptre sword hath swayed ? Severed from this baleful land ? in a clayey grave hath laid A faithful friend and father ? A frame of life and love: Gone ? to dwell with "Our Father;" He lives with Him above.
Methinks, as upon thy face With weeping eyes I gaze, In that happy, holy place, I hear thee sing His praise. Though thou wast not rich in gold, Thou are rolled around with glory; Thou canst all mysteries unfold; No more thy mind shall worry.
We miss thee from our home, Around that happy hearth. Thou art where ? no more to roam ? Light and love ne'er knew of dearth. We miss thee ? the neighbourhood In which thou didst reside, Thy parental hand and brotherhood Ne'er more with us shall abide. "Who is he for whom our tears Flow'd and will not cease to flow. Full of honours and of years, In the dust his head lies low. It was one whose open face Did his inmost heart reveal, One who wore with meekest grace On his forehead heaven's broad seal." We mourn not as those to whom, Frail man, no hope is given ? Though thy body's in the tomb, Thy soul doth sound in heaven. Dust to dust and clay to clay, How prone and wont man is to stray, Fill not your mind with dismay Christ will save you if you may.

    Mrs Buchanan Paterson Dead
About fours years ago, Mrs Buchanan Paterson, of Ramsay, was attacked with la grippe, from which she never fully recovered, although she was able to be around most of the time. Two weeks ago she went to visit her daughter, Mrs Jas Arthur, near Rosebank, and on Sunday last was taken seriously ill, but lingered on till Wednesday, when she quietly dropped into that sleep from which there is no awaking. The deceased was a daughter of the late James Stewart, of Ramsay, and sister to Mr. Robt. Stewart, of the seventh line, and was born in Ramsay, where she spent her whole life. She was married to Mr Buchanan Paterson, who died about fifteen years ago, the union being blessed with four children ? one son and three daughters ? all of whom are living. The deceased was of a quiet disposition, but will be remembered by many for her kindness of heart and her readiness to aid those who were in trouble of any kind.
