    DEATH OF "UNCLE JOHNNY" LUCAS

Death is rapidly thinning the ranks of the hardy band of pioneers, who endured
the privations and hardships incident to the early settlement of Western
Ontario, and laid the foundation for the prosperity and privileges their
descendants now enjoy. The present generation knows very little of the trials
experienced and the difficulties overcome by the early settlers in their
efforts to make homes for themselves in the unbroken forests of the west, and
the courage and energy displayed should cause their memory to be revered
for all time. But few remain who could relate so vividly, or had experienced
more adventures than the subject of this sketch. Mr. John Lucas, of Brooke, who
passed peacefully to his reward on Thursday April 13th at the good old age of
    98. Born in the County of Carlow, Ireland in 1801 he came with his parents to
Canada in 1815, landing in Canada after a two months voyage in a sailing
vessel. After a short residence in Montreal the family moved to the township
of Beckwith, near Ottawa where they remained for some years. Mr. Lucas being
employed on the construction of the Rideau Canal. On 22 December 1820 at the
age of 19, he was united in marriage to Miss Ellen Saunders, his faithful
partner in life who died on 1 April 1895, aged 93 the aged couple having the
rare privilege of celebrating their diamond wedding. The deceased came to Brooke
64 years ago, locating on Lot 12, Con 14, where he continuously resided to the
time of his death. When he located in Brooke there were only four settlers in
the township: Messrs. Watson, Larratt, Jno. Kelly and Jock Bryce, all now
departed. Sarnia was the nearest market town and was reached through a blazed
trail through the bush. Westminster was the closest milling point. The journey
was made with OX teams and required three days. London was no larger than
Warwick Village at that time and Mr. Lucas was offered the ground on which the
London Court House now stands for 34 dollars. The deceased comes from a long
lived race, his father being 87 and his mother was over 80 at their deaths.
Until the last few months he was a remarkably active man, and his mind was as
bright and his body as sound as a man half his years. Eight members of the
family survive, the eldest son, Henry having died a few years ago. The family
in order of age are: Mrs. Boddy of Buell Michigan, Andrew of Brooke, Thomas
of Plympton, Mrs. Black of Bay City Michigan, James, Robert and Mrs. John Kidd
of Brooke, John of Enniskillen, William of Gladwin Michigan. The descendants
include 81 grandchildren and 148 great-grandchildren. The funeral on Sunday
morning was the largest ever seen in Brooke, over 200 rigs following the
remains to their last resting place in the English Cemetery 6th line Brooke.
(St. James). Five sons and Mr. John Kidd, son-in-law acted as pallbearers.
The Rev. J. Downie B.D. preached the funeral sermon from Isa. XLIII, 10 "Ye are
my witnessess saith the Lord Almighty."

    DEATH OF "AUNT" ELLEN LUCAS

On Monday 1st April, one of Brooke's pioneer settlers passed away in the person
of Mrs. John Lucas, 14th Concession affectionately known to a host of relatives
and connections as "Aunt Ellen." The deceased, who had reached the ripe old
age of 93 years, had enjoyed excellent health during her long and eventful
life up to within a few days of her last illness, and her end was a
peaceful termination of a well-spent life. Mrs. Lucas, whose maiden name was
Miss Ellen Saunders, was married in 1820 to her aged partner in life, who
survives her, now being in his 96th year, and was the mother of 13
children, 11 being still alive, they are: Henry, Mrs. Boddy of Michigan,
Andrew, Thomas, Mrs. Black of Bay City Michigan, Mrs. Thomas Higgins, John,
William of Gladwin Michigan, James, Robert, and Mrs. John Kidd of Brooke,
81 grandchildren, and 83 great grandchildren are among the living
descendants. For 61 years Mr. and Mrs. Lucas have resided on the old
homestead, Lot 12 Con 14 Brooke, and during that lenghty period they
expereinced all the trials and privations endured by the hardy and
industrious pioneers who hewed out homes for themselves and families, in what
was then the wilderness of the west. Had the old couple been spared to December
of the present year they would have celebrated the 75th or diamond anniversary
of their wedding, an event which was looked forward to with interest by the
family and relatives. Her death removes one of the few remaining landmarks of
the early days, and in a year or two there will be none left to relate
the history of the early settlements of this district. Kind hearted,
industrious and hospitable to a degree there will be many mourners of the death
of "Aunt" Ellen Lucas. The funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon to the
English Cemetery, 6th line (St. James) and was conducted by the Rev. J. Downie.
It was one of the largest seen in the township for years, testifying to the
esteem in which the deceased was held by a wide circle of relatives and
    friends.
