    The Late Mrs. S. Drummond.

We regret to record the death of Mary Burns, wife of Mr. Samuel Drummond, of Ramsay, which took place on Monday last, two weeks after the birth of her daughter. She was 36 years of age. Deceased had been making good progress for some time after her confinement, but complications arose, with a fatal result. Mrs. Drummond was well and favourably known, and was highly esteemed for her excellence of head and heart. With an unusual bright and cheerful disposition, a kind nature, and the spirit of generosity well developed, she won for herself a large circle of warm friends, who now mourn her untimely demise, while the sympathy of the whole community is with Mr. Drummond and his four little children in their irreparable loss. The funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon, to the eighth line cemetery, and the cortege was a mile in length as it left the house, a tangible evidence of the respect and sympathy of the countryside. ?b?The Late Mr Peter Drummond?/b?
With sincere regret we have this week to announce the death of another of those who settled in Ramsay in the twenties, in the person of Mr Peter Drummond, the wellknown farmer. Less than four weeks ago Mr Drummond suffered from an attack of grippe, but with his strong constitution it was thought he would soon recover. However, the trouble soon developed into inflammation of the lungs, and notwithstanding that all that medical science and loving attention could do for him was done, he grew gradually worse till this (Thursday) morning, when the thread of life was broken and the sturdy yeoman passed to the great futurity that awaits mankind. Deceased possessed a genial nature and a warm heart beneath a blunt exterior, and news of his death will be received with sorrow by a large circle of friends. He took a deep interest in municipal affairs, and sat as councillor for a time. He was an ardent Liberal in politics. The late Mr Drummond came to Canada with his parents from Perthshire, Scotland, in 1826, and shortly afterwards settled in Ramsay, on the farm adjoining the present homestead. He lived on those farms the balance of his life ? over forty years. Mrs Drummond and six children survive. The children are: William, of Metropolitan, Mich.; Samuel, of this town; Peter (the Doctor), of Grant, Mich.; and Daniel, Mary and Agnes, at home. These will have general sympathy in their bereavement.

    Mrs Peter Drummond?/b?
The passing out of a life such as Mrs Peter Drummond's is not an occasion for deep mourning but rather one of rejoicing, as her end came just as she longed for it to do. A busy women all her long life, she had during the war, knitted industriously for the solders, and hundreds of boys at the front had reason to bless her for the comfort that came to them through her work. Since the war ceased she continued her work for the sailors and on the day of her death she had almost completed a pair socks and had laid them aside to be finished "tomorrow," but ere tomorrow dawned she had passed out to the Great Beyond, and thus ended a long life of busy attainment. Her death came last Friday night after and illness extending over several months. She was a life-long resident of Ramsay and Almonte and was known and respected by everyone in the neighbourhoods in which she resided. Mrs Drummond was born in Paisley, Scotland, and was one of a family who came from there in 1842. She was married to the late Peter Drummond, to whom nine of a family were born. Her husband died in February 1892. Four sons, one daughter and a brother survive ? William, at Fortuna, California; Samuel, in Ramsay; Daniel, in Almonte; Dr Peter, at Grant, Michigan; Mrs T.J. Ried, Almonte; and Mr Neil Dunlop, brother, of Brockville; the late Mrs Jas McGregor of Almonte was a sister. A Presbyterian in religion and a member of the church here, she was an earnest worker and a kind neighbour, always willing to lend a helping hand especially during sickness, and she will be greatly missed, by her many friends. The funeral, which was private, took place on Monday afternoon, the service being conducted by Rev Mr Brown. The pallbearers were her two sons, Samuel and Daniel; two grandsons, Harvey and Wilbur, and two nephews, William and David Drummond.

    Notes:

    Died:
Patrick was born in Rathellin/R?th Ail?n Townland, Leighlinbridge, Carlow, Ireland.

Brothers Patrick and Martin Burns, and their widowed mother Margaret, immigrated to Ontario from Ireland abt. 1851. Margaret married Cornelius Madden (also a widower with adult children), and in the marriage settlement Madden gave Margaret's sons what would become the original Burns homestead in Ramsay Twp (East ? Lot 10, Con. 12), which was located opposite to the Madden homestead. (Concession 12 is now Golden Line Road, and Lot 10 is located where it intersects with Old Almonte Road, on what would be the southwest corner.) Patrick and Martin lived and farmed on the property, together. Patrick married in 1859, and brought his new wife Mariah there; Margaret also joined them there following Madden's death. By the 1861 Census of Canada, Martin was no longer living with Patrick on the property, his whereabouts unknown. The following notice then appeared in the The Perth Courier on March 20, 1863: "Sheriff's Sale of Land at Public Auction - Lands and tenements of Patrick Byrne at the suit of Martin Byrne, East ? Lot 10, 12th Concesion [sic] Ramsay". So, Martin sued Patrick, almost certainly for his 1/2 share of the property. The presence of the lawsuit indicates Patrick didn't recognize Martin's claim, and the fact that it was successful (resulting in the forced sale) shows that Martin was judged to be in the right. With this information, Martin's absence from the property in 1861 might indicate that the dispute over it went back at least that far. Regardless, Patrick and Martin came to an agreement and and avoided both the auction sale and any division of the land, though the details are unknown. Patrick died of sunstroke just a few years later, in 1867, while working in the fields, with his 6 year old twins, Martin and Peter, at his side. Martin returned to the property after Patrick's death and remained there for the rest of his life (another 31 years), helping Patrick's widow Mariah run the farm, and raise her 4 children. After Martin died in 1907, Mariah left the Burns homestead and moved to nearby Almonte, where she died in 1911. [H. Presley, 2g-grandson]

    Notes:

    Died:
Margaret's first husband was Michael Burns; he died in Ireland. Margaret immigrated to Canada abt 1851 with her sons, Martin and Patrick Burns. Some time between 1851-1861, she married her second husband, widower Cornelius Madden. Cornelius lived literally across the road from the Burns' farm (on Con. 12, the township line, now known as Golden Line Rd); this meant the Burns farm was technically in Ramsay Twp, and Cornelius' farm in Huntley Twp. Margaret was widowed again by 1861.

Margaret died sometime between the (Jan) 1861 Census of Canada and March 1863 (when her sons were in a legal battle over ownership of the Burns farm - see Patrick or Martin's Memorial for more info). Although no official death or burial record has yet been found for Margaret, her burial was referenced twice in the personal journal of Sarah (Carter) Burns (wife of Margaret's grandson Peter Burns): once, immediately next to burial and tombstone information about Peter Burns, who was buried at Saint Mary's, she wrote "Grandma Burns grave plot 108 in cemetry [sic]", and again later, "Grandma Burns grave Lot 108". Both of Margaret's sons were also buried at Saint Mary's. [H. Presley, 3g-grandson]
