    Son of James Herman and Alice Mabel (Eley) Smith. Killed in WW II action in Sicily at 29 yrs. Buried in the Paestum Mt. Soprano temporary cemetery until returned to Viola for burial. Listed in the Roll of Honor as PFC Clyde Smith.

    Pfc. Clyde Smith, Viola, Killed in Africa Accident SOLDIERS GROVE Pfc. Clyde Smith, 29, son of Mrs. Mabel Smith, Soldiers Grove, was killed July 26 in an accident in North Africa, the war department informed his mother Saturday. Pfc. Smith was born in Viola, but his mother moved here when he left for army service Jan. 14, 1942. He was sent overseas in November, 1942. He had never received a furlough. After receiving training at Ft. Bliss and Camp Ilulen. he was sent overseas from Ft. Bragg, N. C. Before entering the service he had worked for Virgil Radloff, a stock buyer, as a truck driver. Survivors include his mother, two brothers, Lee Smith, with the Seabees in Australia, and Lewis, Viola; and four sisters, Mrs. Harvey Martin, Soldiers Grove; Mrs. Lester Shepard, Waukesha; Mrs. Richard Mundt, Milwaukee, and Mrs. Ray Thomas, Milwaukee.
