The sudden death last Friday afternoon, of Annie E.M. Young, wife of Mr Peter Y. Sutherland, one of the best and most highly esteemed women of this district, came as a great shock to her many friends and acquaintances. She had apparently been in her accustomed good health up to the time of the sudden and unexpected illness, with which she was stricken, and from which she never regained consciousness Born and brought up near Almonte, the daughter of the late William and Mrs Young of Ramsay Township, deceased was in her 55th year. She was married to Mr Peter Y. Sutherland of Ramsay Township, thirty years ago. In her own home she was a devoted wife and mother and an inspiration for good in every sense. During her long residence in this district. Mrs Sutherland took a leading part in church work. She was a devout member of Bethany United Church, Almonte, and was an indefatigable worker in connection with the Women's Missionary and Ladies' Aid Societies, deeply interested in all the activities of church life. Mrs Sutherland was loved and esteemed by many friends to whom she had endeared herself by her many charming and pleasant qualities. The funeral took place on Sunday afternoon from her late residence, Ramsay Township to the Auld Kirk Cemetery. Impressive services were conducted by Rev J.R. MacCrimmon, of Bethany United Church, who was assisted by Rev W.H. McCracken of the Presbyterian Church, Almonte. One of the sincerest tributes ever paid a citizen of this district was the large assemblage at the funeral, the latter being one of the largest ever held in this locality. The profusion of beautiful floral offerings received by the family testified to the high esteem in which Mrs Sutherland was held by her many friends and acquaintances and to the deep sympathy generally felt. Many letters of sympathy and regret were also received by the family. The pallbearers were, Messrs Angus Sutherland, of Ramsay, Dr. A.G. Young, of Smiths Falls, Robert Buckham, of Kinburn, William Young of Claybank and M.R. Young and P.A.E. Young, Almonte. The Late William Young
In the last week's Gazette mention was made of the death of Mr Wm Young, of the 10th line of Ramsay, he having passed away on Thursday morning January 5th, at the advanced age of 87 years. The late Mr Young was born in 1827 at Brae Head, in the parish of Kilbride, Scotland. He was a son of the late Robt. Young, who came to Canada in 1832, and who afterward settled upon the farm latterly owned by Mr P.J. Young, on the 9th line. Here Mr Wm Young lived until 1857, when he was married to Miss Marion Nicholson, a daughter of the late Alex. Nicholson of Ramsay, and went to the farm, "Brae Head," upon which he spent the balance of his life. A family of nine children, seven sons and two daughters, were born to them, the only break in the family being the death of Dr. John Young, who died suddenly at Smiths Falls, on Jan. 17th, 1901. The others are Robert W., on the homestead, Alex N., in Ottawa; William M., in Detroit, Mich,; Rev Stephen, at Lanigan Sask.; Peter A., at Crystal City, Man.; Rev Henry at Seven Person, Alta.; George at home; Jessie (Mrs T.G. Wilson), Arnprior, and Annie (Mrs P.Y. Sutherland), in Ramsay. Mrs Young is also living, and is over eighty years, and is more bright and active than many people ten or fifteen years her junior. Of the late Mr Young brothers and sisters there are still living, Mr John Young, of Almonte; Rev Stephen Young, of Clifford; Mr P.J. Young, of Almonte; Mrs Foster, at Casselman, and Mrs Robt. Buckham of Ottawa, Mrs Toshack and Mrs G. Buckham are dead. The funeral took place on Saturday afternoon, and had it not been for the extremely inclement weather, it would have been one of the largest if not the very largest, ever seen in Ramsay township. As it was, the cortege was almost a mile long and was a splendid tribute to the memory of the deceased. The services at the home and at the cemetery were conducted by Rev S.G. Brown. The pallbearers were fellow-members of the session -- Messrs. A.M. Greig, R. Young (Ottawa), D. Stewart, Angus Sutherland, J.D. Robertson and Jas McLeod. Friends from a distance who attended the funeral were Mr Wm Young, of Detroit, Rev Stephen Young from Clifford, Ont., Messrs Alex N. Young and Robt. Young of Ottawa, Messrs John and Wm Young and Mrs Andrew Young, Mr and Mrs T.G. Wilson and Mr and Mrs W. Cavers from Arnprior, and Mr Geo Buckham from Torbolton. The late Mr Young was of a very quiet disposition, and was a man of few words. He was a man of strong convictions, and when he had taken a position regarding any question of right or wrong he was always found on what he believed to be the right side, and it required a strong argument to induce him to change his decision. While attending the services in the Free church at the eighth line he was ordained an elder of that congregation during the pastorate of the late Rev Wm McKenzie, and when the congregation removed to St John's church, about 1867, he was retained in that position, which he held until his death. After the death of Mr Watson several months ago, Mr and Mrs Young were the oldest couple living, of those who were among the earliest members of St John's church. Mr Young was for about twenty years superintendent of what was known as the Green Bush Sunday school, retaining the position until, in Rev Knowles' time, it was removed to Blakeney. A good neighbour, a kind friend, a ready sympathizer and willing helper in trouble, his passing has removed another of the fast-disappearing links which has bound the present with the past, and in the passing of whom there is distinct loss to the community.

William married Marion Nicholson in 1857. Marion (daughter of Alexander Nicholson and Janet "Jessie" McIntosh) was born in 1833 in Ontario, Canada; died on 11 Apr 1918 in Blakeney, Ramsay Township, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; was buried in Auld Kirk Cemetery, Ramsay, Mississippi Mills, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada. An Octegenarian at Rest.
When the word spread abroad a few days ago that Mrs. Wm. Young of the tenth line of Ramsay, was seriously ill of pneumonia, hope were expressed by many that she might recover, but such was not to be, and this Thursday morning at six o'clock, she passed peacefully away to enter the home beyond, in her 85th year. The late Mrs. Young was Marion Nicholson, a daughter of the late Alexander Nicholson of Ramsay, and she was married to Mr. Wm. Young in 1857 and went to "Brae Head" farm where they lived until January 7th, 1914, when Mr. Young died. Nine children were born to them, seven sons and two daughters, and with one exception, that of Dr. John Young, who died suddenly at Smiths Falls on January 17th, 1901, the family circle is still intact. Those who are living are Robt. W., on the homestead; Alex. N., in Ottawa; Wm. M., at Detroit, Mich.; Rev. Stephen at Saskatoon, Sask.; Peter A., of Crystal City, Man., (at present at Tampa, Florida); Rev. Henry at Morningside, Alta.; Geo., at home; Jessie (Mrs. T.G. Wilson), Arnprior; Annie (Mrs. P. Y. Sutherland), Ramsay. There are 17 grandchildren still living. The late Mrs. Young was a Presbyterian, and was a member of St. John's church in Almonte, prior to which she was connected with the eighth line church when Rev. Mr. Smith was the minister. There she was a regular attendant at the services at a time when to do so meant much more of a sacrifice of comfort and ease than it does today, and when she became an attender of St. John's church she was just as earnest and faithful until declining years and relaxing energy rendered it impossible for her to continue so consistent a course. The funeral will take place on Saturday, 13th inst., from the residence of her son, Robt. W. Young, to the eight line cemetery.

?b?The Late Robert Young Of Ramsay?/b?
The words at the head of this paragraph will send a pang to many a heart; for, there are few men we could name more widely known in this locality, and more highly esteemed, than was Robert Young. The comparatively short illness which preceded his death, on the evening of Sabbath last, affording so little pre-intimation, will make the stroke more deeply felt. It is hard to realize that, that familiar face shall be seen among us no more, and that, that cheerful voice is now silenced for ever. Since the time Mr Young came to Ramsay, now thirty-eight years ago, he has occupied a prominent social position. He had many admirable personal qualities which made him greatly liked, and led to his acquaintance being universally sought. He was cheerful and joyous in his temperament, genial and kindly in his disposition, and more than ready to fulfil all the offices of good neighbourship. Those who had the privilege of enjoying his closer friendship can never forget his fund of real and true kindness and warmth of heart, and the tenderness and affection which he could not forbear to show when the occasion called for it. How often has that kindly face come like a benediction to lighten trouble. As an agriculturalist he was foremost amongst those who took a lively interest in the advancement of that science, his council and advice being always looked for by the Director of the N.L. Agricultural Society of which he had been always a member and very often Vice-President. He will be greatly missed in many ways, and not least in the congregation of which he was a member. Ever since the Presbyterian worship was organized in Ramsay thirty-six years ago, Mr Young had conducted the praise in his congregation. First, in the Stone Church on the eighth line in Mr Fairburn's time; then in the Free Church there; and latterly in St John's Church, Almonte. He occupied his accustomed place on the Sabbath immediately preceding that on which he died, leading the praise of the congregation and hearing the word of God for the last time in the sanctuary on earth from the lips of his son. He was of sincere though unaffected piety, taking a large-hearted interest in every good work, an liberal in his support of them. We feel his death as a public loss. And what must it be to his surviving partner, and family? If a sincere sympathy with them in the sorrow of their bereavement can be any consolation, they have this, deeply and widespread. Mr Young had just completed his sixty eight year.

His legal death record states he was born in Perthshire. A search of births of Alexander Nicholsons during the early 1790's show zero in Inverness and multiple for Perthshire. Furthermore the memorial marker states slightly incorrect dates and ages indicating that the memorial marker may have been placed some time afterward by adult children or grandchildren whose knowledge of their birth origins may have been faulty. Since it is not likely Alexander was a native of Inverness, perhaps his parents were. Furthermore, it is likely that his wife Janet McIntosh was a native of Inverness (as the McIntosh clan hails from there).
