10868 | Son of Alexander Hill, Sr. and Elizabeth Currie Married Agnes Hood, 6 April 1832, Tosorontio, Simcoe, Ontario, Canada Children - Margaret Hill, Margaret Ann Hill, Alexander Hood Hill, Alexander Hood Hill, James Hood Hill, Elizabeth Hood Hill, William Hood Hill, Moroni Hood Hill, Agnes Hood Hill, Nephi Hood Hill, Isabella Hood Hill, Joseph Robert Hill, Jane Mary Hill, Hyrum Hood Hill Missionaries Samuel Lake and James Standing converted the Hill family of Simcoe County to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1840. A family history records that; "The whole Hill family became interested in this faith, and notwithstanding the fact that Alexander Hill, his wife Elizabeth and son-in-law John Richards were momentarily less susceptible to these principles of faith than the other members of the family, yet on 12th April 1840, all the members of this family (including Archibald and wife Isabella Hood) went down into the waters of baptism. A Hill family history records that; "In the spring of the year 1841 Archibald Newell Hill (who had married Isabella Hood a year earlier), John Hill (his brother) and five other members of this branch of the Church crossed over the boundary lines of Canada into the United States, and wended their way to Nauvoo, Illinois, where they stayed for a short time. They returned (to Simcoe County), laden with Biblical grapes for their report. Considerable time was now spent in disposing of their farms and making preparations for their departure. All being ready near the beginning of September, Archibald and family and relatives started for the United States on the 30th day of this month, in the year 1842. Archibald Hill and his brother Alexander were a part of the first (winter) exodus, but they left their wives Isabella and Agnes Hood and 10 children at Nauvoo while they took their teams and helped haul Mormon refugees westward. Returning to Nauvoo for their families and parents, they then re-crossed Iowa and did not reach the Missouri until late autumn. 10890 | son of James Forgie and Alice Crozier grandson of Gilbert Forgie FAG# 202529685 1894, Friday February 16, The Almonte Gazette, front page Death from Diphtheria Keen sympathy is felt for Mr and Mrs James G. Forgie, of Petrolea, in the loss of their little boy under rather distressing circumstances, Early last week they left Petrolea for a visit to Mr Forgie's parents, Mr and Mrs Gilbert Forgie, of this town. When they left home both their children were apparently quite well. They remained one night in Toronto, and then came on to Smith's Falls, where they remained one night. While there their eldest child, a little boy two years old, was taken ill. A Smith's Falls doctor, who was consulted would not, at that stage of the trouble, pronounce it diphtheria, and Mr Forgie come on to Almonte. An Almonte physician was promptly summoned, and he pronounced it a case of diphtheria, and despite everything that good nursing and constant medical attendance could do, the little one passed away on Wednesday night. Owing to the mature of the trouble, the body was quietly buried on Thursday morning. We regret to learn that Mr Forgie's younger child also has the disease, but we understand it is not a severe attack, and hope it will be entirely recovered in a few days. There is no the slightest danger of the trouble spreading. as will as all the boarders left Mr Forgie's at once and every precaution has been taken to prevent its spreading. | Forgie, Wilbert Gilbert (I26096)

10893 | Son of James Watt and Mary Ann Wood Our Pioneer Heritage, Vol. 12, p. 349 George Watt, the first person to join the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in England, migrated to America in 1840 to become identified with his co-religionists. After the expulsion from Nauvoo, George accepted without question a call from Brigham Young to return to his homeland to learn shorthand, preparatory to his assignment as Church reporter. Heart Throbs of the West, Kate B. Carter, Vol. 2, p. 267 George D. Watt was born in Manchester, Lancashire, England, January 16, 1815, his father being Scotch and his mother a native of the country which gave him birth; his father emigrated to America, leaving his mother and him in England, and died in New Orleans. His mother married a second time and he was sent to his grandfather in Scotland; when he attained his majority he moved to Preston, England, and there married. He also joined a religious society and became a prominent and active member. Previous to this he had read a number of religious works, which had the effect of making him an enthusiastic religious devotee. In the fall of 1836 he heard of Joseph Smith through his pastor. "From that hour," he says, "I believed in the mission of Joseph Smith." Soon after the arrival of the Mormon Elders he joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and became an Elder, and labored determinedly to help the work along. About 1840 he emigrated to Nauvoo with his wife and two little children. He went on a mission to Virginia. When the church removed to Winter Quarters, he was sent to England to preach and learn the art of shorthand writing, which mission he filled, returning to America, and coming on to this city with his family in 1851. He was subsequently made church reporter, which position he occupied for about ten years. After detailing the account of his resignation as church reporter, he engaged in the mercantile business. Finding that the business did not pay, for reasons which are detailed in his autobiography, he turned his attention to farming. About this time his severance from the church took place and he subsequently joined opposing religious movements here. He made a study of religious subjects, and wrote and spoke much on them. He was a religious devotee and pursued the subject assiduously throughout his entire career. He has frequently spoken in public here, and had the reputation of being a man perhaps as well versed in the theological lore as one could find. As a stenographer he had the reputation of being one of the most reliable in the country. George D. Watt died on Monday, October 24, 1881, at his home at Kaysville. He was a man widely known in this territory and in Great Britain. He was a remarkable man in many respects, and was quite prominent here. Being a self-made man of strong character, and exercising vast influence, there is not a little in his career which is remarkable, and not a little which commends itself to the young man struggling for a place in the world? commends itself because of the perseverance manifested under trying circumstances, and for the acquisition of information obtained in difficulties.
