11002 | Story in the Almonte Gazette, 1897, speaking of the Durham boats which brought the settlers up the St Lawrence. "As these uncouth craft are crawling cannily by the swirling waters of the Long Sault Rapids, there is observed an unusual commotion among the passengers. There is a hurried landing from one of the boats, and, by-and-by, the wail of a new born infant. Thus is born to Mr and Mrs Johnston a daughter - Janet, now Mrs James Black. The Durham boats landed the party at Prescott, whence it proceeded by wagon to Perth and on to Lanark Village. here scows were built to carry the settlers and their effects down the Clyde and the Mississippi to Ramsay. | Johnston, Janet (I7643)

11009 | Suggested edit: 1926, Friday July 9, The Almonte Gazette front page Robert Houston One of the largest funerals Almonte has ever seen marked the passing of Mr. Robert Houston, a well known citizen. Mr Houston died on Friday and his remains were interred in St Paul's cemetery on Sunday afternoon. It was an impressive sight as the long cortege wended its way from the family home to his last resting place. The funeral service was conducted by Rev. Rural Dean J.J. Lowe. Mr Houston was born in Almonte 74 years ago, the son of Robert Houston and Isabell Harrison. In Almonte he learned the trade of brick laying, which business he followed throughout his life. Forty years ago he was married at Pembroke to Miss Annie Prince and to them were born six sons and four daughters. His sons are Alex, Jack, Harry, Robert, George and Charles, all of Almonte. His daughters are Isabell, Mrs Hiram Hudson, of Arnprior; Jean, Mrs Fred Armstrong, of Almonte; and Annie, Mrs Chris Johnston, of Arnprior. One daughter Mary, died nineteen years ago. There are sixteen grandchildren. He had four brothers: Alexander, who has passed away, Thomas Houston, of Arnprior, Edward and William, of Almonte. In his youthful days the late Mr. Houston was a fine athlete, and his sons have taken after their father in this respect. An athletic team in Almonte would hardly seem to be complete without a Houston in it. His six sons were the pallbearers at the funeral of their father. The floral tributes were very many and the scene was a memorable one. | Houston, Robert (I31492)

11044 | Taken from the Cartwright newspaper in the year 1937 David Duncan Passes to Well-Earned Reward. One by one our pioneer settlers are departing this earth, and as they in turn go one less is left of the hardy pioneers who endured hardships such as we of today do not know, to blaze the trail for those to follow. On this occasion Cartwright community mourns the passing of one such of these as will be kindly remembered by a great many friends, in the person of Mr. David Duncan, who passed away early Tuesday morning, November 24th. in his 73rd. year, after several months of patient suffering. The funeral will take place on Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the United Church of Cartwright cemetery. Rev. W.A. McKim Young will be in charge. Mr. Duncan was born in Almonte, Ont., on March 29th, 1864. In the year 1883 he came west to Cartwright district, and for a number of years followed the teaching profession, serving West Derby, Crystal River, Hazeldell, Chesterville, Howard and Cartwright. Not a few of the youth of that day under his tutorship are now filling important positions in the public life of the Dominion, two of whom we recall being, Bishop Richardson, of New Brunswick, and Robert Stead of Ottawa. For several terms in the early days Mr. Duncan served on the municipal council, before the formation of the present Municipality of Roblin. In 1895, the year of his marriage Mr. Duncan purchased a farm north-west of Cartwright, where he and Mrs. Duncan followed farming and made heir home until five years ago. Prior to Union, Mr. Duncan, for many years, was Superintendent of the Presbyterian Sunday School and many men in our district today recall with deep satisfaction his leadership, and the example he set them still remains warm in their memories. They are better citizens as the result of their associations with him in their boyhood days. We no of no greater tribute that can be paid a man than that his christian life in generous measure was given in the interest of the boys and girls who were fortunate enough to be associated with him. For many years Mr. Duncan was active in church work, serving on the Board of Managers and an Elder in the Presbyterian Church and latterly as an Elder in the United Church. Forty one years ago he was married to Hannah, eldest daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Wray, who survives him, along with the following brothers and sisters, Robert Duncan, Cartwright, Alex Duncan and Mrs. A.G. Robertson, Penticton, B.C. William Duncan, Almonte, Ont., Mrs Kidd Simpson Ashton, Ont. Jas. Duncan and Mrs L. Caskey, of Winnipeg. The sympathy of the community goes out to the bereaved family in their great loss. Our Old S. S. Teacher (By Eber G. Bradley - "Brandon Bard") I have just read in a city newspaper That came to me today Of our dear old Sunday School teacher Who has just passed away. To some he was a good farmer Careful tiller of the sod But to me, our Sunday School Teacher A man who walked with God. He was never a shouting Christian And neither was his wife But you could see the love of God As you watched their daily lives. We loved him in the Sunday School For his king and gentle ways We admired him as a business man As one who always pays. With the neighbours and the hired help He was always kind and fair And though he has gone before us We will meet him over there. Our Teacher David Duncan | Duncan, David (I2379)

11048 | The Almonte Gazette Almonte, Ontario, Canada Friday, August 5, 1898, p. 1 The Late Mrs. S. Drummond. We regret to record the death of Mary Burns, wife of Mr. Samuel Drummond, of Ramsay, which took place on Monday last, two weeks after the birth of her daughter. She was 36 years of age. Deceased had been making good progress for some time after her confinement, but complications arose, with a fatal result. Mrs. Drummond was well and favourably known, and was highly esteemed for her excellence of head and heart. With an unusual bright and cheerful disposition, a kind nature, and the spirit of generosity well developed, she won for herself a large circle of warm friends, who now mourn her untimely demise, while the sympathy of the whole community is with Mr. Drummond and his four little children in their irreparable loss. The funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon, to the eighth line cemetery, and the cortege was a mile in length as it left the house, a tangible evidence of the respect and sympathy of the countryside. The Oddfellows of this town attended in a body to mark their condolence with their bereft brother. Rev. R. J. Hutcheon, M.A. officiated at the funeral, deceased having been a member of St. Andrews congregation. | Byrnes, Mary Catherine (I5830)
